I think Metro 2033 met that mark. It's just so damn good.

Half Life 2 was meh. Doom 3 was better.

If you mean groundbreaking in the sense that is vastly surpassed anything currently on the market, then no. Metro 2033 isn't even the best looking game out, it wasn't groundbreaking at all. Amazing game though.

I don't think Metro 2033 is that much better looking than Crysis. Some aspects of it certainly look better though. Battlefield 3 looks great, but I'm not sure if it looks that great...

We are at the point of diminishing returns. Nothing will look so much better than all the other games before it like doom3/hl2 or crysis ever again.

After what happened with ArmA 2 I'm not buying anything they show for ArmA 3. ArmA 2 looked almost photorealistic in a lot of their trailers, yet the actual game doesn't look all that great.

There is plenty of A3 gameplay out already. From Fall 2011: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7LV52TVABRc&hd=1&t=12s More recent: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHs8TApNvKk&hd=1&t=18s

ARMA 3 does indeed look pretty awesome, the underwater and night time gameplay were especially impressive to me. I'm not sure it will be groundbreaking but we will know in September hopefully.

Unless you want to hang screenshots on your walls photorealistic isn't really as good as it sounds.

Skyrim for me has probably been the most visually impressive game since crysis*

*may require ini tweaking & mods.

I disagree on BF3. I got it about a week ago and can play it fully maxed out at over 100FPS and I was left pretty underwhelmed with how it looked, and the much hyped destruction was also a massive let down. Crysis is definitely a better looking game, as is Metro. The Witcher 2 maxed with Ubersampling has given me a lot of wow moments, but it's still far from being in the same league as Crysis was way back when it was released.

Arma 3 is shaping up to be a fantastic game, the fact it looks so much more polished and runs better than Arma 3 is such a huge relief. As much as I liked the idea of Arma 2, technical issues got in the way of me fully enjoying it.

Both HL 2 and Crysis were developed for the PC. So the answer to your question is simple: "when developers decide to stop creating games for consoles". As long as they keep making the same console fps garbage each year, nothing will change.

Well that actually brings up an interesting point. At the end of this console life cycle, consoles have been holding back PC games, but we are fast approaching the beginning of a new console life cycle, which will result in more impressive looking games. If this console cycle is anything like the last one, the first year or so should actually be good for PC games. Of course after the first couple of years, as we continue to upgrade our rigs and the new consoles continue to.... continue... the games will be less challenging to run on PC, but at least it's not all bad news.

Don't think we will, people say Metro or TW2 but when Crysis came out it was just so far ahead of everything else there was no argument to its vast superiority, it's not the same with these games.

Well Crysis 2 with the DX 11 patch and the high res textures is the technically best looking game out right now. I think even Metro 2033 beats the Witcher 2 in terms of graphics. The Wticher 2's artstyle is great though.

Don't know, but I'm sure it won't be an UE 3 game (SW 1313) and definitely not a game that focuses on size rather than quality and detail like ARMA 3.

I think we'll soon be at a point where everything can be made to look realistic, if it fits the theme of the game.

IMO, with future games it's going to be more and more about immersive gameplay.

Creating more realistic animations, sound design, better ways to convey emotions. Battlefield 3 isn't perfect but definitely a step

in the right direction. The Watch Dogs gameplay trailer looked very promising. I'd like to see more of that

in the future.

Crysis was just light years ahead of anything at that time, 5 years later it still looks good (better than any console game). And if you're talking about modded Crysis, it looks better than any game out there except modded Crysis 2 with the DX11 patch.

I think Watch Dogs is the only game that could have the potential to be comparable to how groundbreaking Crysis was in 2007, and if there's a community around it, there's going to be some great graphic mods to keep it alive for years just like how Crysis is.

I wouldn't say Watch Dogs looks as ground breaking as Crysis did. There's something about 3rd person games that gives them a cheap look compared to FP games; all the character and object models just look miniaturized or something.

I think the next potentially groundbreaking game visually will be from Epics new engine benchmark game that's coming out soon and if that fails to impress, then we've probably just finally stopped improving visuals as fast as before.

I think graphics can be as photorealistic as you would like but for me I think its physics that will be the new "graphics" for next gen. I mean how awesome would it be to be able to dynamically destroy your environment. I am not talking about scripted destruction but actually fully calculate physics.

ARMA3, huge game world with tons going on, the new game looks to have much better graphics and RUNS better to. The new Metro and the new Star Wars could be to.

I think the best looking games atm are The Witcher2, Crysis2, Metro, Shogun2 and ARMA2 personally.

Supposedly all the demos of ARMA 3 have been running on an i5 2500k + GTX 580 at 60 frames and Bohemia Interactive stated that one of their big focuses this time around is optimization and polishing.

Technically, it's more advanced. However Crytek might as well have no art team at all because it's incredibly dull. No patches or APIs will fix that.

Metro 2033 and The Witcher 2 are easily the best looking games out at the moment. I'd say Max Payne 3 as well but there's still some console-level assets that bring it down imo.

Well we can't judge games based on their artstryle, there's too much room for opinion, so we can only judge games technically.

Why waste time judging the tools instead of judging the product? You might have the best hammer ever, but it's worthless if you can't use it properly.

Don't wanna sound mainstream but i'm expecting gta V over watchdogs and all games mentioned above.

I'm fine aslong as it doesn't contain the same crappy feeling than gta IV had.

I'm not looking for the most complex graphics, just visually groundbreaking simplicity, a well represented san andreas in a polished rage engine can be breathtaking.

Can't say a bad thing about hl2 but about crysis, despite the promising way of playing and graphics, gameplay was quite mediocre and buggy.

expecting GTA V to look better than Watchdogs is a bit unrealistic, unless you are also expecting simultaneous console and PC release, in which case it might not be quite as far-fetched, but Watchdogs is expected by many to be released on next-gen consoles and PC, while GTA V is a current generation console game without any mention of a PC version (although I'm not sure they have announced any platforms for GTA V)

I don't understand all this Watchdogs hype, do people know what engine it's on? It will be good looking, obviously, but it won't be anything amazing, saying it might be groundbreaking is pure fantasy, just as much as believing it'll have mods.

Watchdogs has its own proprietary engine, built from the ground up specifically for the game.

Well Crysis 2 with the DX 11 patch and the high res textures is the technically best looking game out right now. I think even Metro 2033 beats the Witcher 2 in terms of graphics. The Wticher 2's artstyle is great though.

If anything I found Metro to be more impressive graphically than Crysis 2 even with mods. The game is simply outstanding looking, only the character models are less than top notch! Wowed me time and time again!

Technically, it's more advanced. However Crytek might as well have no art team at all because it's incredibly dull. No patches or APIs will fix that.

Metro 2033 and The Witcher 2 are easily the best looking games out at the moment.

Well we can't judge games based on their artstryle, there's too much room for opinion, so we can only judge games technically.

I'm not a fan of judging games technically, if it looks good it looks good imo. Regardless, is Crysis 2 even technically better than Metro? That is debatable. Sure the scale is bigger but the level of detail doesnt come close and I would say Metro has the more impressive visual effects by far.

[QUOTE="4-Legged-Shark"][QUOTE="DanielDust"]I don't understand all this Watchdogs hype, do people know what engine it's on? It will be on a revision of the engine they already use for most of their games, Anvil, which is an extremely potent engine and it becomes even sharper with every revision, they won't invest into an entirely new engine at most they could have a higher jump in its tech, compared to revisions so far, this is Ubisoft not EA, unlike EA they don't throw more money at the development PCs and marketing division thinking that "this might finally be it".

I doubt they release watchdogs on next gen. From what we've seen in that e3 vid watchdogs got some good technology with that raincoat physics and the engine ability to show lot of peds in screen but for me more complex doesn't mean better. Something tells me that gameplay is going to be dull, mafia 2 e3 video, one showing a morning walk around the city was quite impressive but at the end it wasn't nothing close from what we were expecting, i really liked it anyway.

I think it will be a while before we see something that is truly groundbreaking in graphics. It won't really happen until DX11 is the minimum requirement, in my opinion. Every game that uses DX11 features uses them pretty sparingly (especially tessellation). Metro 2033 has some parts that look really great but there also parts of the game that just look average. While The Witcher 2 does look great it isn't particularly groundbreaking except for the fact that they showed that games can still look great on DX9. While the video for the Watchdogs gameplay looks awesome I'm sure that it went thru some post production before Ubi brought it to E3.
