[QUOTE="DanielDust"][QUOTE="4-Legged-Shark"][QUOTE="DanielDust"]I don't understand all this Watchdogs hype, do people know what engine it's on? It will be on a revision of the engine they already use for most of their games, Anvil, which is an extremely potent engine and it becomes even sharper with every revision, they won't invest into an entirely new engine at most they could have a higher jump in its tech, compared to revisions so far, this is Ubisoft not EA, unlike EA they don't throw more money at the development PCs and marketing division thinking that "this might finally be it".

every single article I can find is saying that Watchdogs is being built on a "BRAND NEW ENGINE". I don't doubt that this could just be a lie being used to generate hype (the way Skyrim's engine was supposedly brand new) but I can't find any evidence against it.

AC 3 was also on a brand new engine, until they finally admitted, a revision of Anvil, they aren't made of gold and their games are not that popular (even AC), yet they take lots of gambles, this however would be way above a simple gamble (if it were true). Anvil is a great looking engine and Watchdogs looks "standard" nowadays, which is great, it will not be groundbreaking in terms of graphics, but it can be new and exciting with its gameplay.

I'm going to have to disagree with you on that one. Watchdogs did not look "standard" to me, but I did not include it in my original post because I do agree that it will not be groundbreaking. Red Dead Redemption was the best looking open world console game when it was released and I would not consider that game groundbreaking either.

[QUOTE="Toxic-Seahorse"]

[QUOTE="Zubinen"]Is this a question or an ARMA 3 thread?: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I0untAgEncI&hd=1&t=6sZubinen

After what happened with ArmA 2 I'm not buying anything they show for ArmA 3. ArmA 2 looked almost photorealistic in a lot of their trailers, yet the actual game doesn't look all that great.

There is plenty of A3 gameplay out already. From Fall 2011: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7LV52TVABRc&hd=1&t=12s More recent: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHs8TApNvKk&hd=1&t=18s

Looks like Call of Duty to me. Nothing impressive can be seen from the youtube video alone. I'm guesisng you've seen something more to make such an assumption? This video sucks.

I will first say that ArmA III cannot capture the fantactically detailed graphics so well because of how expansive it is.

There are a few games that you can point to with graphics- mainly, The Witcher 2 and Battlefield 3 among games that have already come out.

As for games that are upcoming, Watch Dogs looks great. The lighting and rain effects were amazing. GTA V should also look pretty good, but if R* has any sense they will support easier modding so that what happened to GTA IV can happen to an even greater degree. (Steam Workshop? Please?)

Also, Planetside 2 has some fantastic lighting effects at night. Planetside 2 - Night Ops

A game like this must be developed for the PC and the PC alone, that cuts out a tremendous part of the potential revenue stream as consoles are far more widely used for gaming than PC. This would limit your potential revenue down to only say 20% of what it could have been, however this does not mean you should expect it to sell that well on pc in the first place. Especially given that piracy is a very big problem on the pc due to how easy it is to pirate software. Moving on from just that, such a game would not be able to be run at max settings on current hardware and this would begin to bring that already low limit down even further. Finally, such a groundbreaking game would have a very long development cycle compared to the standard game in order to accomplish it's goal of being graphically groundbreaking. When you put all of these things together, you'll quickly realize that it would be extremely risky to develop a game like this and the profitability of such a game would be severely limited compared to what was necessary to develop it.
