The question is simple- In your opinion, which of these games has the most impressive gameplay physics? Please don't vote unless you've played all the games in question. Feel free to comment and add your own favorite if it's not on the list. I only listed choices that I have personally played which impressed me.

Red Faction has nice physics. But the whole destruction of buildings is dumb. I mean... you destroy buildings with a hammer?

If you read the description its not just a hammer, it's some sort of power hammer that has tons of crushing force.

Anyways I can't comprehend why battlefield is in the poll, there's nothing impressive about the physics in any of those games.

My vote goes to source engine (HL2), it's a bit dated but I haven't been as impressed with physics in any other games I have played after those.

The hammer isn't the only thing you use to destroy the buildings and what-not. In fact when I play it, it's usually my last resort unless I just want to bust through a wall or fence. It doesn't have to be totally realistic, just impressive! :P. It's all about how it makes the game more fun.

Bad Company 2 is on a different level than the other Battlefield games in terms of how the physics and environments impact the gameplay.

No it isn't really... the only thing really that different is the scripted destruction of buildings. The physics are about as impressive as CoD's honestly...

Half Life 2's Source Engine hands down. Look at Garry's Mod, best fun I've had using physics in-game.

I'm not really being opinionated here, the only thing that happens in BF:BC2 is that things that go up come down... and that's about the extent of it. It shouldn't be in a poll over games like GTA:IV, Cell Factor, the Source games etc. The physics engines behind those games are way more advanced than the one in BC2, fact.

Red Faction without a doubt. Trounces Crysis on its scale. And BC2 - it is mainly hit points driven, rather than everything physics driven.

I like GTA IV's physics. There are some bugs and glitches in it, but I have alot of fun messing with the physics.

Gotta go for red faction, i did nothing else from generating holes and taking buildings down in that game. What are the chances of crysis 2 in NY having the same physics? Slims i guess because of the graphics, anyway i gues bad company 2 will have to do till another game allows me to make new windows in buildings.

There's a lot more to physics than blowing things up. X-Plane 9, Pacific Fighters and Flight Simulator X for me.

In my opinion Crysis, only because I have not played RF:G yet. BC 2 has pretty impressive physics as well!

The physics in F.E.A.R. are amazing! Especially when you blow something up in slowmotion... A LOTS of particles flying around, glass shattering, shell casing falling to the ground and bouncing.., simply amazing! :) However, like someone said earlier, physics isn't all about blowing stuff up! In Bad Company 2, the physics (even if some people think aren't great) have a big impact on the gameplay.. GTA IV also have an awesome physics engine. Most of the animations there aren't scripted. For example: when you get hit by a car . Or when you're driving and you crash into something and fly out of the window. All of this is driven by it's physics engine..

Sample of what physics is to me:

Weather (clouds and thunderstorms depends on temperature and moisture content):

Contrail formation (depends on temperature conditions at flight level):

Lights/Shadows:

Aerodynamics:

Other game, GTA IV, Crysis is just nice, Guerrilla felt off and BC 2 despite having destructible buildings it doesn't change the gameplay much and it's not that impressive and interesting, for me at least.

Red Faction hands down. Source has maybe a more realistic physics engine, but we're going for shock and awe in this vote, right?

Also, the only use of physics in BC2 is bullet drop. Destroying walls in a scripted way =/= physics. It's fun as hell, but it isn't physics.

It shouldn't be in a poll over games like GTA:IV, Cell Factor, the Source games etc. The physics engines behind those games are way more advanced than the one in BC2, fact.

I completely agree that BC2 doesn't have as realistic an implementation of physics as say.. Source games.. or Red Faction Guerrilla.. but it's the way the destructible buildings and cover integrate themselves into the gameplay that impressed me. Sure, it's scripted.. and the buildings/cover can only come apart so many different ways.. but it's how it affects the game and makes it feel like you're really there. I think one of the other posters said it best- "Shock and Awe" factor is what I call "impressive." To me, that's how you make a good game. The game is just plain fun, and those things have alot to do with it. I can walk up to a door with enemies behind it and know that if they spot me, they can shoot me through the wall, which will eventually splinter and come apart similarly to real life. Or, I can bust the door down (which is something that's been missing from the majority of shooters forever).

Destruction impresses me, ok? :P And yes.. your statements are your opinion, not fact. This isn't a poll about the overall best physics engine, it's a poll about the implementation of physics in specific games being impressive. Several people voted for BC2, so it's place on this list is justified. I do feel a bit bad for putting no source games on this list.. but honestly those physics feel boring to me now because they're only executed on a very small scale.. like kicking a trash can over, or throwing something and seeing the way it bounces. That's very realistic, and impressed the hell out of me in 2004/2005. What you see in Red Faction Guerrilla is the ability to set explosive charges near the base of a tower, detonate them, and you can HEAR the metal creaking and the stone crumbling as the stresses finally take the tower down. You can see the metal and or/stone getting fatigued as you hammer away at it.. If the enemy has a convoy crossing a bridge, you can destroy that bridge a number of different ways. I just found that much more impressive in the shock and awe department.. and the overall scale of what can be destroyed is amazing.

Red Faction Guerrilla had real time physics, since my PC fps dropped each time when there was an explosion or a building collaspe.

My vote's for Red Faction: Guerrilla here. Took one of the main selling points of Crysis for me-blowing up small shacks-and basically designed the game around that. I do have to bring up honorable mentions for Trespasser (1998) and Exile (1980s-no, not the RPGs, the 2D sidescroller adventure where you fly around in underground caves with a jetpack), though. They had very advanced physics engines for their time, even beyond titles that would release a few years later.

BC2 has no physics, everything is scripted in that game...but thats only my opinion.

BC2 is not even in the same league with HL2,GTA IV,Crysis regarding the physics...but ofc the real winner is Red Faction Guerilla

why is bc2 up there? its physics engine blows. Sure you blow up buildings but not much physics is envolved sicne the stuff you blow up just disappears and doesnt affect the environment.

Yeah i Remember that, first time playing FEAR i was blown away.
The Grenades are so friggin epic in that game.
I didn't had a pc back then so i played it at a friend, wanted to smash my xbox so bad and hoped somehow i could get my 500 euro's back :p
