Most MMOs have trials you can download and play for a limited time. Use those so you can decide for yourself.

Runescape may be the biggest waste of time known to man. It's filled with the low-lifes of the world of geeks...there's not much worse than that...As far as WoW goes, if you really want to spend 13-15 dollars a month paying for it, be my guest, but you will lose yourself in it...and it gets kind of depressing to start in the WoW race so late, seeing as most everyone has about 10 lvl 70's.. but its up to you, I'd stay away from MMORpG's if I were you.. WoW's graphics are too cartoon-ish for me personally...I think It's about time they come out with WoW 2...which would mean starting over for all the old-time players...and that would bump the suicide rate up about 10%... cause mass chaos, armagedon..whatnot.

If you've never played a MMOG before, WoW's probably as good a place to start as any. It's easy to play on your own, and with it's massive subscriber base (which is growing all the time), it's easy to make friends to play with. If you're not too sure about downloading the game, then you can probably purchase a trial version from your local PC game vendor for less than $5 (ie. EB, Game, Myer, et. al.).
