Hiya, i'm looking to replace my graphics card, so i can run the majority of today's games on high setting with a decent resolution, here are my current specs

Intel Quad Core Q6600 2.40GHz

2GB RAM

nVidia Geforce 8600GS X2 (Running in SLI)

457GB Hard Drive

Vista 32 bit

I'm interested in these 2 graphics cards, and wondered which is best, ATI Radeon HD4850 512MB PCI-E, or the nVidia 9800GTX 512MB? I didnt really want to spend more than £150 and wondered if these are good cards or not? Thank you.

I think the 9800gtx+/gts250 is better than the 4850 isnt it? Anyway, the 9800gtx isnt really sold anymore and they renamed the gtx+ to the gts250 which you can get wtih 1gb of memory which is what i would get.

They in the same tier, being that they are around equal in performance. If I were to say which one would have an edge it would probably be the 9800GTX+.

XD fail the gts series are simply more energy efficient 9000 series cards the gts 250 being a 9800gtx, the gts 150 being the 9600gso, and the gts 100 being the 9400

The 4830 is the equivalent of a 9800gt, not GTX+. The 4850 and 9800GTX+ are equivalents, pretty much trading blows on many games.

wut are you suggesting the gts 250 is an ati 9800x2 (also known as the 9800 gold edition)?? thatd make no sense.

but if your querying if its the equivalent of two 9800gt's in sli the answer is no it is a rebranded and more efficient 9800gtx. they say so in almost any review on it you read on or offline.

No, two 9800GTX on the same board.

It depends on the game, but I'd be tempted to justget one of these and overclock so Icould buy a new game with the savings.

Im completely aware that the gts 250 is a renamed 9800gtx+ (i did say that btw learn to read) anyway, you seem to be the one who fails because the 4850 does not beat the 9800gtx+ they are pretty much the same with the gtx+ beating it out slightly more often. And yeah, the 250 is more eficient and comes with 1gb which is why i suggested it...

Yea well i've started collecting different upgrades here and there, got 4gb of ram to go in, new sound card, and hopefully a new graphics card soon. Just been looking on nVidia's website, and what's peoples opinion on the GTX 280, i know its quite abit more money, but is it worth it for the extra performance? Also i'm going to be upgrading my PSU because at the moment i think its 400 watts, and i was going to upgrade to 600 watts.

If you gonna go with a higher spec card go with either the Ati4890 or nvidia gtx 275. They are alot cheaper than the gtx 280 and performance wise are about only 10-15% slower. If you cant afford those 2 ( they are about 250) you can go with either Ati 4870 or the gtx 260 ( just make sure is core 216). They are in the $200 mark ati been a bit cheaper but a bit slower but they are both great for the money they ask. If you only can afford 150 go with gts250 ( is the same as 9800gtx+ just withless energy consumption and cooler thus overclocks better ). Even with the gts 250 you can max every game at 1680x1050 and almost all games at 1920x1200. The Ati 4850 is a bit slower but cost about $20-30 less

Ok brilliant, well i think i have decided on a GTX 280, because over here in the UK, the difference in price between the 280 and 275 is not as great:(

Is 600 Watts ok to run this card, or is 700/800 better?? I'm going to fit the upgrades myself, so the money i save on paying someone to do it, means i can have the better graphics card and components.

It might be ok. Depends how many amps there are on the 12v lines Llook in your psu( there is a sticker with numbers) under the +12v how many amps you have ( you are gonna need around 40amps to be on the safew side)

I've been looking at this PSU and wondered if it was any good, or too much for what i need, here are the specs;

  • +3.3V = 30A
  • +5V = 30A
  • +3.3V + 5V Max. Combined Wattage = 170W
  • +12V1 = 22A
  • +12V2 = 22A
  • +12V3 = 36A
  • +12V4 = 36A
  • +12V Max. Combined Wattage = 780W
  • -12V = 0.5A
  • +5VSB = 3.0A
  • -12V + 5VSB Max. Combined Wattage = 20W

thats alot thats total 116amps (that psu will allow you to have 2gtx280 in sli) . If you have the money go for it or else a good 650W-700w with 50-70amps on 12v is more than enough. Just make sure is a good brand like corsair, coolemaster, thermaltake,pc power and cooling, ocz are some good and reliable brands (never go cheap with psu )

Yea i dont want to scrimp on the PSU, the one i posted the spec for is a BFG ES-800W - SLI Power Supply Unit. It seems to have good reviews on the net. After looking at everything i need to change, i wish i'd built my own computer in the first place!

False. Anyway, cards are nearly the same, but you should get nvidia for support in games (if you play top notch nvidia optimized games, if not both are great but 4850 gets my recommendation).

To answer your question,

If the video memory requirement is at 512 mb or below than 9800 GTX+ is better. It has a higher performing GPU and memory speed, however if the video memory requirements exceed that number the 4850 is the way to go.

Yes building your computer is always better in mine and many others opinion. :)

Don't sweat it though, the best way to buy a PSU is by brand name. Since a PSU can easily destroy your computer if it malfunctions in the wrong way at the wrong moment, it's usually worth the extra few bucks for the bigger names.
