Definitely not the 8800GT cards, they're too close to the 9800GTX and HD4850 in price, but not performance. If the budget is tight, the 9600GT isn't a terrible choice, but if you can afford it, I'd go with the 9800GTX or HD4850. Which exact one you get depends on what games you play - in some games the 9800GTX does better, while in others the HD4850 does better.

I'd probably opt for the HD4850, yes.

Depends on your location. In the UK 9600GT(£90) and 8800GT(£100) are quite close to in price and performance and then the HD4850(£130)and then the 9800GTX is about £190

We were already linked to the cards, which is where I got the prices. I'm aware that the prices in the UK and other parts of the world are different, but in the US, the 9600GT is different enough in price from the 8800GT that it's still a good buy.

I would take the 4850 HD because it is fairly cheap and offers very good performance. You will be able to run all games on high/maximum settings up to a certain resolution. You might need a cooler though, because under load, the card can reach temperatures of 85C. Not dangerous, but any higher and it will be.

actually not true the 8800gt ocx (factory overcloaked) from BFG is on par with the 9800 series, easily, and i got 2 of them to put in SLI for only $360 and that was for both of them together. Also when it comes to compatability and drivers i would go with Nvidea. but that last comment is opinion.

to the TC check out this deal this is a monster of a video card especially for this price. get 2 of them run it in SLI mode if your motherboard supports it and you will see some serious GPU action going on.

The 4850 costs less but performs way better

Asus 4850

ahh but crossfire isnt near as stable in gamming as SLI is, and the drivers i would rather go with Nvidea, not to mention ATI uses Smart Shader instead of actual hardware processed shaders. and i would rather take the Nvidea route, though both are great deals you cant deny either one of them for that fact, but i would rather go with the Nvidea route.

if he searches he can get a good 8800gt overclocked and a psu that will run it for about 280-300 dollars, but alot of this is which company people prefer, ati has its followers nvidea has theres, i use to be for ati, but im sick of compatibility errors, and driver compliances plus once you get into having multi video cards linked, crossfire tends to crash on some games, but they are improving that though, just as they are improving the already working great SLI. but the 4850 is not a bad card dont get me wrong its a beast as well, and espcially for the price, if i was going ATI I would go with the duel 4870 but again thats getting into the multi GPU, and Crossfire isnt preforming like it should, but give it some time and it might, my SLI combo will let me run games at highest settings, and resolutions, at great frame-rates for a long while, including crysis, but in about 1.5-2 years ill upgrade when better hardware comes out with better prices. but either ATI and Nvidea are great now, i just have my preferences.. but ATI is definately cheaper.
