even though im a fan of guildwars, i wouldnt recommend anyone at this point in time to get one.
UNLESS u are in it for the pvp experience or are planning to join a fully active pve guild. since many outposts in the campaign are empty.
however, the pvp is still a blast and u wont be disappointed by it. if u really like guildwars pve, then get prophecies.
for pvp, there are pvp editions available from the ingame store for a lower cost than the full game (ie pve content locked).
edit: all games are standalone, except for eye of the north
It is not a terrible time to get into the game. I just bought Prophecies this month, along with Factions and Eye of the North, and the game is fantastic. You can get Eye of the North for $10 at Target (the only expansion pack), and the rest are stand alone games going for $30 (at target anyways)...I got them for $25 each with coupons.
Get prophecies if you do get one...that is what I am starting on and I love it. There are tons of people playing at any given time, but I could care less as I just like playing the game by myself.
Prophecies or NightFall.
Get NightFall so you can have heroes, that you can use your own builds for. Try to join a guild, which can be very helpful. I only do elite missions and I have no problem finding groups. I still say give it a shot, GW2 doesnt even have a release date, so it might come out late 08, or maybe 09.
I have all three of the standalones and the Eye of the North Expansion, I would have to say Nightfall then Prophecies, then if you are really into collecting or mainly doing PVE possibly get Eye of the North. Factions I did not like as much, and it really left me wanting more out of the title.
I have yet to see too much on the release of Guild Wars 2, so its a wait and see thing with me.
