GRAW on the harder levels. No saves, save checkpoints are few and far betweem, you can only take a few hits, the levels are huge, and many enemies with a lot of firepower and places to hide. Very frustrating and slow paced game where you have to really think and use your team members correctly. Even then they get stupid and get killed anyway.
X-COM - Terror From the Deep. Holy crap...if you miss the early missions with the lobsterman engineers, you can kiss your campaign goodbye. No engineers = no hybrid craft technology, no hybrid subs = you won't be able to take down the large/extra large UFOs, once that happens, it's game over. Of course, it doesn't help that lobstermen are resistent to gauss/harpoon weapons...not that you'll want to kill them, you need to capture them...which means getting into melee range to hit them with the thermal tazer...GAH! That game was so frustrating...but in a fun way
Rainbow Six Vegas on realistic.... during some parts of the game when you have to hold position against an onslaught of enemies wave after wave....now that's hard.
There is no such thing as difficult game (If you aren't a newbie). If you are stuck in a particular mission for too long, then you have the developers to blame. There has been some bug or the optimization has been faulty or they whimsically wanted it to be ridiculously difficult to begin with.
Hardest game? That has to be some Garfield game I played on the Amiga (or was it C64?)... I never managed to find out what I actually had to do in the game :D
Perimeter was one of the most difficult rts games I've played;as far as fps Farcry on the high difficult settings. I got killed so many times it felt like a religious experience.

SimCity 4 is pretty hard to get used to, and even then.. it's still hard to actually create a thriving city with large sky scrapers and still avoid a screen that says you're doing something wrong, every 5 seconds.

I agree. Just experianced such a thing with Darkstar 1. They made a base saving mission too hard. You weren't allowed to use the ship you spent upgrading to your liking all game. Stopped me cold.
I was thinking about this game just when I saw this thread. In fact this game is so f**king difficult & frustrating I hurled it in to the trashcan without finishing the game although it had a good story.
Stalker on the difficult settings. Nothing like having no health packs, and 10 enemys with better guns and armor that all can hit you better than you can hit them.
Im sure you're meaning hardest SP. But for me the Quake series with strafe jumping mainly in MP, I have been playing Quake 4 for almost a year now and still not the best strafe jumper. But I love sliding :P.
For single player game I'm not sure what would be the hardest.
Easily the demos of the first two Commandos games. Two of the three demo missions were damn near impossible. No, I didn't bother using any strategy guides or anything like that.

The first Etherlords. I've never played a strategy game where i gave up after the 3rd mission from difficulty on the easiest setting.XaosII
Same here, I gave up in beta 1 because it was so incredibly unbalanced, I didn't get asked back for beta 2, After that experiance I haven't even wanted to pick up the retail version of it.
