Easily the demos of the first two Commandos games. Two of the three demo missions were damn near impossible. No, I didn't bother using any strategy guides or anything like that.NamelessPlayer
Try the full versions man. They are a lot harder!

I recently finished Gothic 2 Gold. That game was pretty unforgiving in the beginning.
I really can't qualify any game as "the hardest" because I am just good at some genres and suck at others. No FPS is too hard for me even on hardest settings (unless it's just unfair like constantly respawning enemies and such). Then again if I try a flight simulator, I will never make it off the runway even if a professional pilot is holding both my hands.

Funny, I also read everywhere how difficult the first Commandos games were, but I had no trouble at all with all four strategy games in the series save for one level in Behind Enemy Lines - the one where you start on an island and have to blow up four coastal guns.
I don't remember any particular hard game. I remember only one mission in Mafia- The Race on City Circuit. It was hell. I have beaten that race before the last patch to mafia was released. It allowed you to downgrade difficulty lvl. in that one race.shinian
I remember that level. It was real hell until one actually finds a neat trick. I don't know, might be a bug, but I found out that if you don't press down the acceleration button, but rather pump it, the car is unrealistically controllable at turns which makes the race very easy. Didn't have to lower difficulty at that race :D.
There is no such thing as difficult game (If you aren't a newbie). If you are stuck in a particular mission for too long, then you have the developers to blame. There has been some bug or the optimization has been faulty or they whimsically wanted it to be ridiculously difficult to begin with.shariq166
I agree with that.
I had No idia how to play a game called sentinal, dont know if anyone remembers it.
farcry is very hard if all you want to do is run and gun, and it puts you in some dificult situations, like when you have to come out on to the roof of that building and theirs a helecopter and about a million mercs all bearing down on you,
diablo takes alot of work to rais to a high enough level to progress in the game, pirticually when you get in to the flayer jungle
Lets say we're talking about modern PC games, there are many old 80s games and many console games (e.g. Ninja Gaiden) that are ultra impossible.
Anyways, the winner is, no doubt, Far Cry. That game is a **** They put you in super tough situations near the end of the game, you'll just be raped over and over by your enemies. It's **** hard and frustrating, if they make Crysis that way, i'll never touch it. Usually your enemies see you better than you see them, i mean that's ridiculous, then those monsters kill you faster than you do them, and you can't even quicksave, I just can't describe it. I ranked that game very high, but still the difficulty almost destroys it.
Commandos? My fav WWII series? Easy as pie, it's all about thinking, you can stay hidden and there's no pressure at all. Easier than RTSs even.
Oh yeah, online games can be a **** especially if you're playing against mega pros. Some people are so sick, they spend playing a game for years, 24/7, and then they waste you like nuthin. People new to a given multiplayer are never given a chance. Survival of the fittest. Live sucks, sucks sooo bad.
there's a very nice, old, adventure game "Sanitarium". I don't usually play that kind of games but this one got me hooked.
All was pretty smooth up to the point when i faced a musical puzzle. I had to replay a short tune and because I am really bad at music I spent a whole day trying to solve that . I made charts, pictures and whatnot. And i just couldn't get it right.
Finally, i asked a friend of mine who was good at music , he came , listened to the tune once, done the puzzle in 3 minutes.
It's pretty difficult when a game makes you use skills you clearly don't have.

LOL i remember the game exactly! funny story is that this is the game that got me into music, and look where i am now? music theory minor
I never really have trouble with games, even on the highest difficulties. One of the few times I ever had a problem with a game was when I played Ghost Recon. On the last level, I made a quick save, only to be mowec down with machine gun fire. So I had to retry about 30 times trying to get out of dying. ( No I didn't have any earlier saves, and I wasn't restarting the level. If you have ever played the original Ghost Recon, you'll know that the moscow level is KILLLER).
Like I said other than that no difficulties. The higher difficulty settings on FPSs just mean that you need to play hide and seek, and in the end, such tactics greatly improve your online gaming skillz.

Wow I gotta disagree here. Part of a good game is the challenge and overcoming these challenges. And a difficult game is not an error on the developer's part. It simply means you hit a wall and you gotta use your brain a bit to get yourself out of the situation.
-Sending an army to a rival's city and then getting defeated in battle and having your rival invade your city in Total War is not a developer error.
-Making the choice of ordering flank speed out of necessity in Silent Hunter 3 and having three destroyers come at you is not a developer error.
-Making a huge ground army with little antiair support then having it destroyed by a handful of bombers in Supreme Commander is not a developer error.
Just look at Oblivion! While it was a great game imo, the scaleable enemies took every bit of challenge out of the game. Sure, I died my first time playing it...but not from the monsters (I died from drowning and falling). Now, if Oblivion did not have scaleable enemies I think it would be totally better. You could try to take on a difficult enemy a few levels higher than you and it would be a challenge.
I would hate PC gaming if everything was too easy...I'd feel like I was playing consoles
As for the most difficult game, I gotta say Shattered Union. I have the hardest time balancing defense and offense since every time you attack a neighboring state, he counterattacks you and any units used offensively cant be set to defense until the next turn.
developers really need to start using some sort of real AI other than just scripting, such as using neural networks.

guess what made me a wannabe musician- the music game in Earthworm Jim 2 :D. Naah, just kidding. It had some effect on me, but it wasn't the only reason.
Rainbow Six Vegas on realistic.... during some parts of the game when you have to hold position against an onslaught of enemies wave after wave....now that's hard.spikepigeo
R6:V on realistic was a cake walk for me...either im really good or you suck really bad.
The most difficult game for me was Commandos: Behind enemy lines. I really enjoyed the game, but the missions were damn hard. I spent almost a year to finish it. After that, I promised myself not to play any other Commandos game...
Besides that, I didnt find any other game to be difficult. Far Cry was a thrilling and seamless experience, going from one section to the other without problems, and GRAW was challenging but not difficult.
STALKER was pretty damn difficult, even on the easiest setting.V4LENT1NEAgreed definately gets easier once you get better guns.

Ya, so long as you stay in cover and use the crosshair before poking out its like God mode.
I can see how its hard, though....three good shots and youre dead.
The hardest game I played on PC is Trials 2 Second Edition (came out 3 months ago). Like the extreme sport of Trials, the goal is to get over tough obstacles on a trials motorcycle. You don't have lives in this game, you can break your neck as much as you wish, and even with this factor, there's a track in the game called Inferno that not even 2% of players have completed AT ALL. Some did with over 500 faults (Try to beat my 50 second no-faulter run ranked #4 in the world) All hard tracks are grueling hard, but all can be done without faults (I did them all) Some will take you well over a hundred falls to just complete once. After that, you never stop to improve but there will always be some challenges in this game. Even the best players in the world fall often and it's a constant battle between man and machine. As fun as this game is, many find it too hard but not me, it keeps me coming back for more. If you like hard games, try it for yourself.
Here's another track called Steel and concrete, it's the toughest after the dreaded Inferno track. I did this run way back the week the game got out, now I do the same in 1:07 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWbE71kLpvQ
That looked easy right? Try it for yourelf there's a free demo. Careful not to break your keyboard or gamepad though...
