ok so right now my connections to the internet are wireless n for my desktop, and a 50' cat6 running to my xbox 360 via a motorola sb5100 surfboard with 2 splitters between the modem and my room and 1 before the modem with a signal booster before that. somedays i'll get great speed out of my wireless n network, and a perfect connection on my xbox 360. other days are not so hot. when it sucks, it really sucks, like today, my internet moves at dialup speed, and my xbox360 only has 1 bar in COD4, which makes it lag to the point that it's pretty much unplayable. so my plan is to have a new coax outlet installed in my room and using an ehternet router instead of wireless and running much shorter cat6, like 4-6' from the surfboard to the desktop and 360, i also have a motorola signal booster which actually worked wonders on my HDTV signal (used to be unwatchable now it's fine) but i ahven't seen any difference in my internet signal. i'll also be running about 30' less of coax from my surfboard to my hddvr which im hoping will clear up a still somewhat fuzzy hd signal? so basically this brings me to my big question...

what the hell is the difference between the motorola sb5100/5101/5102/5120/any other surfboards i may have missed. which is the latest and greatest and why? what kind of performance differences will i see in the different models. i've read plenty of people guessing and telling me what they heard, but if anyone actually knows the hard facts on these modems, PLEASE let me know. also anyone with any other info on how i could boost my connection speed let me know...

btw i use cox digital/high speed internet and live in san diego, ca so it's not like im using some **** service provider in the middle of iowa or anything.

sounds more like a cable internet problem than anything else. See cable is faster than DSL in theory, you share the cable bandwidth with everyone around you. DSL comes right to you so it's a constant speed albeit a little bit slower than cable. Cable is super fast when no one else is using it, when your entire neighborhood is watching cable TV and surfing on their own cable interent your going to get slower speeds no matter what you do.

You should never put a signal amplifier before your cable modem. To be set up correctly, you should have Cox come out, and run 1 line directly to the cable modem, then 1 line to the amplifier, and split your TV lines from the amplifier. If you cannot keep signal long enough on your cable modem with out the amplifier, you will need Cox to come out and look at that as well. I had a similar problem for a long time. Cox eventually did "maintenance" on the repeater across the street, which took care of my problem.
