I see many brands in stores, which which are the best qualities ones, and which are the ones you want to stay away?

PLASMA
  • Panasonic
  • Vizio
  • Pioneer
  • Hitachi
  • Samsung
LCD
  • Sharp
  • Sony
  • Samsung
  • Vizio
Some of them are worth it for name brands, and others you have to be careful with. I've heard that Vizio is #1 in TV sales because of their cheap prices; quality is great, but it isn't the highest like Sharp. I don't know about Plasma, I plan on getting one of them. A good company won't have burn in in their plasma, so you don't want to go with a bad one. I specifically want to know how Hitachi is and how all the others compare to each other like Pioneer vs Panasonic.

I'm definitely giving in to Sony in the LCD category, Samsung as a close second. It's too bad Sony doesn't make computer monitors.

In Plasma, the BEST is Pioneer. None of the competition even comes close. But they are hella expensive. After Pioneer it becomes an issue of what bothers you more. I own a Samsung Plasma because in my opinion it looked the best. You can't really go wrong with either Sammy or a Panny but I would stay away from Hitachi. they do some funky things with their resolution. And don't buy an LCD. They are crap. Again, that's my opinion.

Best plasma on the market, hands down. This is an 8th generation Pioneer KURO.No other plasma will come even remotely close. If you don't believe me, check out avsforum.

http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pna/v3/pg/kuro/product/details/0,,2076_310069733_477423263,00.html

For LCDs, the Samsung 81 Series was supposed to be the holy grail of LCDs, but the initial consumer impressions sound quite disappointing.

http://www.engadget.com/2007/07/11/samsung-announces-71-81-series-1080p-lcd-hdtvs/

In the end, choose a TV that looks best to you that is in your price range. Be careful of places like Best Buy, where they only show HD content. Most of your viewing will probably still be in SD, and many high-end plasmas and LCDs suffer when displaying SD content.

For LCD, Sharp (the Aquos models) and sony (Bravia) are really top notch TV`s. I have one of each in my home and am impressed with both.

...What in the world are you talking about? There are 1080p plasmas.

Plasma displays have lower resolution relative to size than LCD displays, but plasmas do in fact come in 1080p varieties.

I've read a lot of threads on AVforum (I'm getting a new TV in October). This seems to be the general consensus.

Plasma:

Pioneer (way too expensive for most people, but they are fantastic).

Panasonic (I would go for these, you get a lot for a decent price.) If you're on a budget, PV70 (or PX70) (european name) is the way to go.

Samsung is in third, I really like their picture quality.

LCD:

Sony or Samsung. I personally think that Sony has the best picture (the high end series, that is). Buuuuut, there have been some clouding issues with their last gen. Hopefully that's fixed now. No matter which of these brands you buy, chances are you will be very pleased. Especially the new Sony-TVs. Their new contrast levels and brand new motion compensation technology seems to be the best ones out there. We'll see how Samsung counters that.

I don't really care about the rest. Sharp maybe?

Plasma- Pioneer

LCD- Samsung I'd pick samsung personally because they make exact quality LCDs as Sony, their newest tv lines always come out first, most importantly price/performance they are a hell of a lot cheaper. For example you can get a 46 in bravia(No xbr2 just plain 40v2500) for about 2000 an xbr2 for 2500 or an xbr3 for 3000+. OR you can get a samsung 4665f for about 2200 and the 4665f has a better dynamic contrast ratio and does hdmi 1.3. the only thing that beats this made by sony is the newest xbr4 and xbr5 and the W series. These models just got trumped by the two new lines by samsung xx71 and xx81. The xx71f has a 25000:1 contrast ratio (higher than the new xbr lines) and the xx81f has a WHOPPING 100,000:1 contrast ratio (highest on a production made lcd to date) because of a new backlighting that doesn't cost an arm and a leg to put in the tv.

Good example: Sony 46" XBR5 $3899

18000:1 DCR, HDMI 1.3, 120Hz

Samsung LN-T4681F $3999

100000:1 DCR, HDMI 1.3, 120Hz

Samsung LN-T4671F $3399

25000:1 DCR, HDMI 1.3, 120Hz

Oh, yeah, I totally forgot Viera LCDs! You bought yourself a great TV (that's what EISA says at least), if this is what you have:

Panasonic Viera TX-32LXD70 (you probably have diff names in USA)

It was EISA-runner up to their 26". 50 European magazines have Panasonic in 8 top spots on that list, I have to check those TVs out...

My last generation TV was a PIoneer Elite Pro 520-HD 480p EDTV. It still has the best 480p image of any 53 inch rear-projection set I've ever seen. For regular progressive scan DVD, it is a remarkably good TV. But it does not do my PS3 justice. I just bought a Panasoinc 50 inch TH-50PZ750U plasma TV and a Panasonic 58 inch TH-58PZ750U plasma. They are both 1080p native resolution. The only superlative that adequately describes them is "stunning". Well, maybe "stellar" too. I highly recommend Panasonic for plasma.

I see many brands in stores, which which are the best qualities ones, and which are the ones you want to stay away?

PLASMA
  • Panasonic 2 (I own a 42" viera and its amazing)
  • Vizio 5

  • Hitachi 4
  • Samsung 3
LCD
  • Sharp 3
  • Sony 1
  • Samsung 2
  • Vizio 4

RyuHayabusaX

There ya go. The prices reflect the positions ive put in but you get what you pay for. Plasma is better IMO but that seems to be a bit of a matter of taste. They give instant response times that LCD's rarlety match leading to a smoother moving image, and they give a better fepth of colours, but LCD's give a slighlty brighter image which is what sells them to people.

As reported on Engadget this week, Samsung and Sony collaborated to form a new company called SLCD. This company will produce budget LCDs. I'll supply the link in another post.
