So i'm building a computer from dell (i know...whatever) and it gives me the option of choosing:

ATI Radeon HD 2400 PRO 128MB

ATI Radeon HD3650 256MB GDDR4 (add 50$)

Radeon ATI HD 2600 XT 256MB (add 100$)

nVidia GeForce 8800 GT 512MB (add 250$)

Now I'm not really a PC gamer but I do want to be able to play some games from time to time, which one should I pick?

Agreed!

The 8800GT is by FAR the best card there.

in order of best to worst: 8800GT, the rest of them. The 8800GT will last you an age.

the 3650 is really only for HD video playback, really don't recomend it for gaming.

I'd do the same especially that OP doesnt seem to be that much knowledgeable for this manner so just think if he went and bought the 2400

Get 9600GT if you arent that much of a hardcore gamer. It would serve you well for a long time.

I am just assuming that you can get 9600GT quite a bit cheaper than the 8800GT,otherwise go for 8800GT for sure.

Finally, you agreed that 8800GT is better if the difference was small :)

Might as well go with the 8800. It should be nice and comfy for you and run most games like a dream (it might struggle with Crysis--but then all cards do--and certain Source games can get tempremental, so read up before you play the likes of Portal and HL2E2).

250 more

I know the 8800 is the best card but...

Like I said, I don't really care about running Crysis in maxed out settings, I just want to be able to play some RTS games from time to time.

I think i'm just going to leave the 2400 (should be enough to play games right?) and save the 250 to upgrade it later

9600GT will be more than enough for all the RTS games (even WIC) and not only that you could SLI 2 of these later (when you need the extra GPU power) to really good effect.

I hope my misleading information didn't steer you into getting the 2400, it's garbage. Get the 8800gt, even though you said you'll only be playing occasionally, you would wan't those occasions to be fun not a slideshow:P

Also the 8800gt will last you a lot longer and will ultimately save you money instead of upgrading.

to be honest id look at someone else to build your PC other than Dell, alot of places will sell you a PC with the same specs for cheaper.

If you dont feel buying 8800 then at least try to get 9600GT... Its really worth it an im sure you are going to regret your decision of buying 2400 especially that you had the chance to get something else and better

Perhaps you can help then. Any deals on 9800GTX's (building from scratch, so it looks like the way to go for me)?
