I was thinking of downloading AVG Free or Spybot Search & Destroy and Lavasoft Ad-aware for Spyware. Is it better to buy virus scanners like Norton or are the free downloadable ones just as good?

Some free ones protects you against the same stuff the paid ones do, however there are a couple of free ones where additional protection has been turned off - Usually to get to buy their "pro" version... NOD32 is the way to go if you want to pay for a light-wight antivirus, where updates & upgrades are totally free. If you want a free antivirus you could try avast, antivir, comodo or avg.

I use AVG and it works very well, I haven't had any issues in the past year using it. The only thing the paid version offers is a customizable scans with regards to days & times you can scan.

The other two you list Spybot & Ad-Aware are spyware scanners. AVG also makes one of those and you really need to have at least 2 of those installed anyway.

I only use freeware anti-virus programs and never had any issues. That's not something I can say about commercial versions *cough* Norton *cough* Best freeware anti-virus software: AVG, Avast or Clamwin

I use Avast, but there are other good ones around there. The worst you can get is Norton, it became a nightmare.

I use Kaspersky Internet Security, it has both Anti-Spyware and Anti-Virus. It's really good, and so is Avast(if you don't want to buy Kaspersky)

I've heard from a few friends that Norton has gotten a lot better, but I don't know first hand since I'll never install it again.

Go with the Avg Free it's just as good or better than norton or any other anivirus you might buy, and the Spyware software you mentioned works well together. Just my opinion
