No one plays RTS games for their story, Skirmish and Multiplayer are why people buy RTS games. You can't bash on the RTS genre for their badstoriesandimmersion when all RTS fans will agree with you. When your playing an RTS game, don't look at it that way, look at it this way. RTS games are good for theirstrategic gameplay and tactical combat, they make you have to use your head to defeat your enemy, rather than shooting in youropponentsgeneraldirection until you hit them, like in most First-Person Shooters. Pretty much, play RTS games for their gameplay, not their stories.

RTS is a terrible genre and they could never get as immersive of stories as FPS games.visceron

they are basicly not about the story at all. or how do you like the story in good ol' Chess?

they are like complex chess in real-time, or turn-based. i still absolutely love to take a round of SupCom with my friends every now and then, even that i like shooters a little bit more myself too.

how can anyone call Company Of Heroes, Supreme Commander or World In Conflict a terrible game? well, each to his own...

The first PC game I ever bought and played was Starcraft. It broke me into the PC gaming world 12 years ago, I would have never enjoyed PC gaming if it wasn't for Starcraft. I'm just sayin'.

Same here. Not sure if I would have never really got into PC gaming, but StarCraft sure gave one hell of a helping hand.

In my opinion, RTS games are just beautified board games. The over the top viewing angle and simple animations remind me of chess . I'm not knocking the genre, but how can anyone actually enjoy and become immersed in an RTS game's story and characters when it uses such simple mechanics? In addition to that, how can one tolerate the drastic difference in the presentation style of the cutscenes and the actual gameplay? That practically destroys the illusion. How do you guys feel about RTS games?

BluRayHiDef
WUt? Really.... I still play Dawn of War series today that's the original and its add-ons. Read what you want from that but RTS is by far one of the best Genres and console only gamers have no idea what they are missing.

i did'nt like them nearly now but one day iwent to nearby store got total war collection and WOW!

it felt too engrossing, the tutorial, the units, the graphics, the diplomacy, the relationship you would feel you are controling your own army. people revolt agaisnt you.i know the game has no blood but the RTS are rated like this:-

graphics and sound -75/100 not too great but good

gameplay-99/100 this is toooooooo awesome everything so well placed

RTS is one of the main genres of PC gaming and what seperates it from consoles. What you're asking is pretty stupid.

Fans of blizzard games pay big attention to the story. A huge portion that originally got into WoW are people who played WC3 and TFT and wanted to know how the story progressed.

Like many who are wondering if kerrigan will actually be able to be turned back into a human. ANd yes, yes she does.

If it doesn't involve mindless rushing, RTS can be very fun. I used to play Age Of Empires 1/2 silly, although I was often disappointed by the low limits, no room to expand. I haven't tried Civilisations or that other RTS I can't remember the name of, but it's on my to-do list.

I lvoe to build and manage, but I hate warfare (most of the time) and rushing (always).

My sarcasm detector is getting absurd readings, waaaay off the charts :P

I do. The creativity at work inside a proper RTS game easily overwhelms whatever any other genre can offer.

What gave it away? My xfire profile in my sig full of RTS games?

[QUOTE="MrLions"]It is chess if you think about it. Out smarting your opponent with massive armies, constantly thinking what to do charging into their bases, arty them to hell, call in support from the sky it's pretty intense at times. Company of Heroes *cough* It's also relaxing break from shooters and usually has no annoying players in multiplayer. And some games allow you to change the camera angle when watching a replay and you can see the view of your army which is pretty cool if you ask me :oBluRayHiDef

I don't have a problem with it being like chess. I'm just wondering if people who play RTS games play them for the story and characters. The RTS genre simply seems unfit to convey stories on an individual level and with the style necessary to immerse the player into the world of the characters. For example, look at gameplay footage of Starcraft and then look at the cinematic-like trailer. They seem so different. It makes me wonder why the game is advertised in such a way where the story seems like the integral part of the game (or at the very least equal to the gameplay in importance). In reality the story couldn't be anywhere near as important as the gameplay. Do you get my point? The gameplay style (bird eye view, with so many "game pieces on the board") isn't as personal as a first person or third person game, where you're tied to a single character who you follow and control.

I really don't care for mch story or character development in games and I do agree in most RTS games that is really non-existent I really dont even touch the singplayer campaign in a RTS and I just go straight to multiplayer.

I love RTS games. They challenge you to actually think something through before you do it. Online play is much more thrilling, because you're going against another person, and you have no idea what he/she is going to do next. In other words: RTS games FTW!!!
