With the release of Windows 7 only a few weeks away, who here is planning on upgrading OR who allready has it?

I definitely am.

Feel free to use this thread to discuss Windows 7.

I'm not upgrading anytime soon. Windows 7 might be great, but my Vista setup is working fine so there's not really a reason to go out and buy a new OS. Plus, I'd rather wait til Service Pack 1 anyway.

I'm staying with Win XP as long as the games still support it. I did the same with Win 98 SE, didn't switch until 2004.

I know this is a games forum, but judging by the responses, do some people only use their computer for games? I don't think so.

I have two older computers that I keep around solely for playing older games on them. But.. I don't that counts since I still use my main PC to do all kinds of other stuff.

How much is it going to be? 200-400?

How long will it take for there to be a price drop on the professional version?

Same here, my newer games that requires the processing power is played on my modern desktop, while older gamers are of course played on the older PCs here.

If its that good - in critical reception, has grand support... and is well priced for students. Then I might *finally* switch from XP. Otherwise im happy atm.

I would, but I only use Business/Professional/Ultimate versions of MS OS's... And I don't feel like paying $200 to upgrade when Vista Business is working fine for me right now...

Maybe a little later when DX11 comes full circle and I have my new GT300 series card I may swap out a new SSD and Windows 7 at that time... But for right now, I am fine with what I have...

This. It will also depend on how difficult it is to upgrade from Vista. I think I heard that you don't have to reformat to upgrade from Vista, if that then most likely down the road.

I'll stick with XP for the time being as I don't think my machine can handle it... Maybe if I get a new PC next year I'll change to 7.

I'm switching, but can anyone tell me what the differences in the versions like Home Premium, Professional, and Ultimate? I assume Ultimate would have every feature.

I don't think home premium has IIS and it can't join domains.

Hmm, I was wondering about this as well since, being a college student, I was planning on getting the deal on 7 Home Premium. It looks sufficient enough for me. (I guess XP mode would be nice, though.)

EDIT: for grammar

I don't see a reason to upgrade unless there's some significant performance benefit or something. I'm still with XP and have no problems, I'd rather spend the money on hardware or games.

yea same (not a student though), Home Premium seems like the only one really suitable considering I would not use any of that other stuff.

Though that Windows XP compatability thing might come in handy, but not fo an extrar 80 dollars lol

I want to see what benefits the Final Version has.

Some people say that the BETA version proved to show that Windows 7 had more stability and better performance than Vista. Considering the statement, it does sound good for a person like me who needs to use up the computer resources on necessary programs like Adobe, Autodesk etc, and also less of a problem for gaming.

OEM around $100 for Home. Windows hardly ever goes down in price, one of the perks of a monopoly.

how is OEM different from retail? Im just curious

iirc I was considering Vista at one point, the OEM disk, and someone mentioned that you can only install it like once or something. Is that true? Or is it just the same as retail, only you get the disk and thats it (no fancy box lol)?

Pretty much. No box, and there is no option to get alternate media (64-bit) Also, OEM is supposed to be used on new computers only, but there is no enforcement of that. I think one reason for that personally, is if there was no OEM option, piracy would be higher than it already is...
