Seriously, I just got invited into DOTA 2 so I watched some videos, got into a match and I got insults and threats, what the hell? Not everyone is an expert.

When someone is new to any game I introduce them to the basics and that's it, not insult them and apparently this is common.

Damn, sorry to hear about that. I'm totally new to Dota 2 as I haven't had any experience with this genre but my first game, I was lucky not to get called a noob, instead everyone on my team just abandoned me without even saying a word. I don't think I'll get this game when it comes out, even SC2 isn't THAT elitist.

It's even worse than a COD game, at least some kids there are really nice (And some of them are actually neighbors or friends, but that's not the point).

Actually, SC2 isn't very elitist at all, the same with many RTS's. And yes, I started a match with 4 teammates to end up with 2 and then 3.

Then don't pay attention to the text chat then. Why take anyone over the internet serious? It's not like they're in your face holding a knife to your stomach IRL. Is there a practice mode anyway?

Very competitive game(s) in which your team is made up of 3 or 4 pretty anonymous players and just one player can throw the entire game.

There is no practice mode in DOTA 2, it's greyed out. So, the new beta testers that are new to the game can't even play with bots.

Highly competitive. Its annoying. My 1st game i got REALLY nice people, helping me out and introducing the game. Then the 2nd and 4th games....i was told i had down syndrome and the same guy proceeded to attempt to kick EVERYONE off the team.

The genre has become infamous for attracting these kinds of people and fostering the worst gaming communities in existence. Unless you have some friends playing that want to team up with you, I'd suggest either doing your best to ignore them or play a different game. That's what I did (got some friends to play with for a while, but now I mostly just play other games that aren't as toxic).

Agreed. It's not fair to pick on only MOBA players. The same can be said for FPSes, RTSES, etc. If it's a competitive genre, expect people to be competitive.

This is the main reason I don't play competitive games is that I play games for fun, not just to win.

You can actually play with bots if you go to play > create lobby and then edit the settings to make all empty slots bots. The first 2 difficulties are easy and won't try to deny you. The last 2 difficulties will deny you, get items cheaper and will actively gank.

Nature of the gameplay at its core. And of course then there's competitive gaming communities in general, which are populated with douchebags this side of genuinely friendly people. Which makes sense really competitive environments breed it. Trial by fire and being unaccommodating comes with the territory, and that puts plenty of people off those games - and to be frank, part of the appeal.

I'm sure you noticed, but Dota 2 and MOBAS in general aren't DS or X3, just ignore them, continue playing and getting better, be cautious all the time and the most important, report them for harassment, you'll make it harder for them to find matches, commend friendly players and report bad ones.

I got a pretty thorough verbal lashing as well when I tried the game lol.

Pretty hard to get better and learn the game when noone is willing to give you a tip or two. I still do my best and just lulz at the people raging at me though. Internet gangsters.

Game is fun though. Worth toughing out.

Yeh I was amazed too. LoL(z) seems to be full of foreigners with awful english and hotkeys for "N00B" and "OMG". =( Still, HoN and Dota communities might be slightly more aggressive. Too bad, I really like those two. I thought all the kids went to CODZ.

At least in LoL there is actually a tutorial and actually... I've been playing it for a few hours. It's much more accessible and so far the community has been nice, plus, it's actually easy to report people.

the fact that there are no servers or community management tools means just about every game you play you will play with random, different people, and this encourages players to be idiots. if you're playing an fps on a server with a tight community and you disrespect another player you will get kicked faster than you can say dota. furthermore, when people are running their own private servers they want to help out new players and build relationships because that then becomes an integral part of having fun in the game. when you play with a different set of random people every single game tempers run high and people assume that whenever a player makes the slightest mistake they must be the biggest noob. i play the majority of moba games with buddies i've played with often and when i go random i don't take the game seriously. there have been tons of times when the enemy team has a noob or two or uncooperative players so i can live with that happening to me without having to resort to death threats and name calling. then there's the nature of the game. if you feed in a moba you are assisting the team more than you would if you were afk, which makes a lot of people angry very quickly.

As everyone is saying with MOBA games, if one guy sucks or doesn't know how to play, It can ruin the game for the other players. I played a good deal of SMNC and one player can get you trapped in the spawn

It's mostly cause it's a team game... and if 1 person is bad, they are basically "feeding" the enemy team, meaning giving them money/exp, whatever. 1 person feeding an enemy team is enough to completely unbalance the match resulting in the feeders team to lose, 30-40 minutes of their time wasted, and rage to ensue.

Unless you're playing it with friends or know how to play that specific hero, I would avoid it as it has one of the most atrocious communities ever.

Too many youngsters.... too many.. And dont forget that LoL surpassed even WoW on active gamers per month.... They stand at 12M and growing... The more people there is in a game the more idiots youll find.... I thought WoW was the pinnacle of childish and elitistic behavor for years now... But i was wrong... LoL is first by far.

Yeah, that's why I stopped playing. Once you get into ranked matchmaking, there is absolutely NO WAY to play casually whatsoever. Then the unranked matchmaking is full of a-holes, so there is nowhere to go. :(

Yeah, the # 1 reason I don't play MOBA is because the community is, without a doubt, the worst community for any multiplayer game. I honestly don't know why anyone would enjoy such a teamwork intense game with such an awful community. The first game I played I had someone screaming at me through the mic because I missed a snare and, apparently, that one mistake caused us to lose the entire game (in his opinion).

In FPSs, everyone can be winner by scoring some kills regardless of who won the game. in mobas, it just doesn't feel that way. the fact that you can directly see EXACTLY how hard your teammates are failing gives you an added sense of "if it were me i would have done it better", whereas in fps, since you can't directly see what all your teammates are doing you sometimes resign to your fate and not rage. furthermore, the genre is so teamwork intensive that if you went on massive killing sprees the entire game but your team didn't help out and you lost, it just feels like you wasted your time because the game has different phases (laning, etc) and sometimes you feel you spent half an hour supporting your team just so they could lose the game in 30 seconds. personally, i think i've gotten used to the terrible community. or maybe i've just become one of them. hard to say.

u need to try APB. its got similarities in communities if you want punishment.. every 5 minutes someone whines about cheating when they cant use 3rd person mechanics to save themselves.

ive literally had my teammates spend hours whining at this. or when a player sucked they would also rage pretty ahrd and get singled out. thats a horrible way to get treated id hate for it to be that way and is one of the reasons ill never play a game like DOTA. APB is tolerable community wise when u have some rep

While some people are just the biggest a holes, from personal experience please consider the following. Dota is VERY team orientated, one noob on a team an ruin te game for everyone. Do your research on starter/basic heroes eg lich. Do not jump on a game as a noob and pick anti Mage or ursa DO NOT play matchmaking until you are familiar with ganking, initiating, supporting, carrying and most importantly item builds. This is just basics you will need. Finer details like warding and tune control you will pick up with time. START in a private match with bots for at least 10 games befor heading to matchmaking. I hate seeing noobs jump in and say hey how do I buy stuff, using ultra on creeps etc. If you don't do the above I can tell u are going to be subjected to abusive behavior. Check playdota.com for guides and tips for beginners.

Swiftstrike5

I never had a problem in League of Legends, wen i used to play a couple of hours a day. We (randomly chosen players) always worked as a team, sometimes we lost, sometimes we won, and regardless of this, at the end of the game, we were satisfied because we had a good time.

Yeah same thing happened to me. I got invitet to play DOTA2, read some tutorial stuff and then tried to join some NPC matches. I died a few times and 3/5 matches I played was insulted and ridiculed until I left. They don't seem to realize that if they treat new people like they do they will be the only ones playing at launch. I for one have no desire to play it anymore after that, at least when I played RoI for the Steam holiday achievement the people weren't complete d-bags.

I think it will be like that in the Closed beta and when the game first comes out. People that are already good at DOTA will be put in the same games as you because you are both low levels. But once you can get just noobs in your game it should be fine.
