why bother with the DRM free versions in the humble indie bundle?

It seems to me that you're way better off with the Steam copies; I don't get what the fuss is over DRM free. The steam versions have achievments and track how many hours you and your friends play so its easy to see how far your friends are. It's great if you want to know if you can talk to them about a particular game you're both playing.

I took the Steam keys then let my friends use the DRM-free versions.

I dunno that sounds fishy. Normally I'm all about sharing my games with my friends but when the price is pay what you want and you can give to charity I think everyone should throw some skin in the game.

I like having backups. Steam is eventually going to go down and all of the games with it (the patch thing is a legal nightmare that won't happen) so I want to be able to play certain games 10 years from now like I do with certain games from the early 2000's.

Typical steam fanboy logic, We choose DRM free version because we WANT TO!! We don't give a damn about achievements and stat tracking, Get over it!

a multibillion dollar company with a stranglehold on a market is never going to go bust. Unless the apocalypse happens, then you'd have bigger things to worry about.

I think the risk of Steam going belly up is pretty slim, with that said, any company can go bust. Markets change, and heck...Steam itself can change. Maybe some day Gabe will sell Steam to some corporate giants who will turn the service on it's head.

I have friends who have never heard of Steam, or who aren't into gaming enough that they'd want to install Steam and register for it. The direct downloads work well for them.

I copied the DRM free versions on a USB stick and let my friends play them, thats what friends do after all. I don't really care about giving to charity or the developers.

Why do you not care about the devs? Do you want them to keep making games? I deliberately gave all the money I payed to the devs.

I meant for the bundle, Obviously when a new game comes out that I want, i'll buy it. Thats when they get my money. I'm not going to just hand it out. Plus I did pay $10 for the bundle so it's not like i'm being cruel.

Because when Steam loses the rights to a game, the game is not on Steam anymore. If you want proof, look up Dragon Age 2 on Steam. People bought that game, and it went away.

I would rather have a DRM-free version of a game, so that I own it. But if you must have it on Steam, donate at least $1 and they give you a Steam code for your games.

How do you pirate from the Humble Bundle sells their games for a penny and is giving money to charity? Scum of the earth right there.

No, I bought the bundle and then loaded the files onto a USB stick to let my friends try them. If they want to buy it it's their choice but I did buy it.

I am a Linux user. I have a Windows partition for games that won't run natively in Linux or with some configuration via WINE, but I really hate booting into Windows. It's an inferior OS for everything except gaming, so I really appreciate the cross-platform and DRM-free nature of the Indie Bundles.

Uh yeah dude. You distributed a DD to multiple people, while keeping one copy for yourself on Steam. Thats called Piracy. They make it DRM free to prevent you from having the hassel of dealing with DRM--not so you can distribute it to your friends free of charge.

I guess the lesson here is that DRM isn't as bad as people make it out to be; as the extreme ease of piracy when its DRM free leads to this. And for all the whining about Diablo 3 from what I understand that game has gone on still uncracked so its DRM was a success too.

I will always choose the DRM free version, and I can't fathom why anyone would not. Achievements and the worry about them has to be the most pointless sh*t ever, it's a worthless pretend-game basically so I have no problem not using steam for a game. Also every single game you would likely want is already waiting to be downloaded on hundreds of different torrent sites, surely you can see how very pointless DRM is in almost every single instance (of course there are a few exceptions).

Steam won't go down. That's like Microsoft, Nintendo or Sony going out of business.

My ball says Steam will go down after PC gaming falls, Nvidia, AMD, and Intel call it quits, and the world is ruled by our new Lunimac overlords.
