I didn't like the ground battles much because units have to hit each other like 100 times. It's insane. But once I used a mod that turned it down to about 5 up to 10 hits, it became a lot more fun and tactical. Space battles are a lot of fun though.

It gets a bad rep because its a shallow RTS.. Space is 2d where who has the bigger force usually has more to do then any tactic or strategy.. Ground combat is tedious and a freaking chore.. Its not at all fun and is downright boring. The campaign map is alright but gives yo ulimited options.. In the end if you want a space RTS, the Homeworld series owns EAW in every way when it comes to space combat.. For Ground there are tons of games that do it way better.. And the campaign map is done 10times better in games such as Total War. In the end its a shallow rts.. I was expecting fully 3d space combat, what I got is something really a 10 year old could play well.

How shallow can it be when you have different classes of troops?

Look, play it for a while, and you'll see why it ain't the best RTS/Strategy game out there. Whilst I do enjoy it, I modified it with mods to get much more out of it, since vanilla EAW lacks once you complete it a few times.

thats a really good quote. at least we can say it was better than Galactic Battlegrounds :P although that did have the joyous function of allowing a limitless army size.

Adrian got it right on IMO tho, the game was designed solely to please and entertain Star Wars fans, not provide a new experience for RTS fans. and fairly heavy Star Wars fans, given that im a pretty big Star Wars nerd, especially with PC games, and i got bored of this game after maybe 2 ground maps and 2 space battles. to me it was more of an attempt to be a KKnD game (remember those) except with perhaps a tiny bit more strategy. although the only strategy i discovered was attacking from different angles at the same time with different troops. theres no building strategy or resource strategy, its basically KKnD lol

Very observant.

Doesn't mean I look subjectively to all SW games being the best in all genres (far from the truth actually). If you want to understand why games get bad raps, then you have to be objective, don't judge my choice of avatar and signature as fanboyism, it's merely one of my favourite fictional universes. However, it is far from my favourite games since as Adrian said, the games are designed for Star Wars fans, not for genre fans.

It got a bad rap purely because it wasn't a well done RTS, but it was a well done SW RTS (not a wider audience in gaming).

wellllllll, I did enjoy the game. It was fun while it lasted. I do think it was shallow and maybe a step down from the earlier starwars RTS starwars battle grounds. It really didn't offer anything new other than the cool space battles. To me I think it could have been better but the expantion pack helps make up the differance.
