Why do I feel that it's too soon?

My rig has 2, SIL 7800 GTXs, an Athlon FX-57, and 2gigs of ram. How come I feel that it's nearly time to upgrade both the processor and video card soon? I bought it about 1.5 years ago, and I was hopping to atleast get to 2.5 years before needing to open the case up. With my specs, what are my chances of running games on high with all the bells and whistels at relativly high resoultions.... and I mean 2500 x 1600. Or, if my odds are zero, what about my cahcnes on running on medium settings into the future?

um, your single core might do you in, but other than that, the fact that you won't have dx10 will be you're only downfall for probably another year.

The problem is that hardware and technology has been changing very fast in recent times.  It kind of reminds me of the time frame of 2000 to 2002 when processor speeds really shot up very quickly.  In January of 2000, I had a 433MHz CPU, but just 2 1/2 years later, I was at 2.26GHz.  Later this year, there is talk of affordable quad-core CPU's and no doubt we will already see the first product refresh of the first crop of DirectX 10 video cards!

I would not make any moves with regards to your hardware until you have seen some games start to run slowly on your current rig.  And I'm not talking about games like Supreme Commander that are ahead of the hardware curve.  My general rule of thumb for upgrading a computer or buying a whole new one is not to do it until 25% or so of your games are running slowly at the graphics settings you want.  But at the rate hardware is moving, you could realize massive performance gains if you were to sit on your current rig for another year.  It would really be worth it then.

Thats still a fine system. Might not get the big games later this year at full but they will still run well. I'd say your ok for the rest of the year. Maybe get a new processor for christmas special or something.
