lately when i've been playing counter strike source, people have been telling me i lag like crazy and sometimes i get stuck for over 5 seconds. i think my computer is fine because i get an average of 100 fps. my internet connection is really fast cable that seems to run all my other internet programs perfectly. i barely get any choke or loss from servers. i try not to run any online programs in the back except xfire. what else could be the problem? thanks in advance.

a firewall caused this exact same problem for me, especially when using shared connetion via a router with someone else playing at the same time

It's because you share your connection with someone, else try to activate your console (-console in lanch options) and try wrighting rate 25000 and cmd_rate 30 (i think).

In my personal experience, cable internet is dog crap. Your bandwidth may be fine, which is why everything downloads so fast, but I'd bet your latency, which is what actually matters in games, is horrid. I had Comcast for awhile and cancelled it because I could never maintain pings below 200ms. Unlike cable, DSL provides consistent latency and bandwidth because it gives you a direct line to the central office. You aren't sharing the connection with your neighbors like you are on cable.

my ping actually averages in the low 30s. i do have a router and a firewall and i'm sharing connections with 2 other people but those 2 people werent even using their comps while i was playing today. what do you guys sugest i do about the router/firewall? i've also never had many problems playing cs 1.6 and halo online.

a lot of people have problems playing games when their xfire is on, try turning it off first. If it doesnt work, its probably your firewall.
