Over the years of building pc's as a hobby I've come to realize that it's much cheaper to build your own gaming machine instead of buying it prebuilt from a company. On the other hand I do think that it's cheaper to get a mid/low end pc prebuilt, referbished if possible, rather than trying to get a bunch of lower end parts and putting them together.

[QUOTE="Thinker_145"]If that's the case then why is everybody calling that dell system which i customized to be cheap and unreliable cuz it is also an "XPS".Baselerd

Theyre not unreliable, theyre just overpriced. And typically, DELL doesnt use the nicest parts from the nicest vendors for their pc's. They give you value ram with little cheapo xps heatsinks, cheaper brand hdd's, and cheap proprietary mobo's/psu's.

You dont get Corsair memory, or seasonic PSU's. You get cheaper products. That's why dell's so rich. They charge you more than the price of premium hardware and give u cheapo stuff for the most part.

Basically that's the case. Although the XPS line ends up using parts that are a bit better than the average Dell; however, you still won't see high end memory or power supplies in any system. The motherboard, you might see a brand name one in a few XPS systems, but that still doesn't necessarily mean it's a good one.

Like RayvinAzn just said, a big company like Dell basically has assembly-line construction and quality. Small shops and the like are far better as you can custom order your parts but it will still be more expensive simply because you will pay more than the cost of the parts on each part along with labor.

Building your PC in the end, with a little bit of trial and error as you learn, nets you the best quality and price-to-performance ratio.

It's not *personal* computer, unless built for your own specifics needs & demands... And no pre-built system will ever match 100% *your* needs.

That's why I build. I find it fun & entertaining, also.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16832116202
$110

Notes: You can overclock this :) It has another GB of RAM - high quality RAM I might add - The KB/Mouse are overkill for a comparison build like this, but eh we're gamers - The part content in general is of a higher quality as is the warranty & tech support in most cases. Total is $1310 the added costs is in the mouse/KB & RAM. Oh yeah if it wasn't past 4AM I could have shopped around and came up with a better price.

Case closed ;)

BTW, yes all the crap Dell loads on their computers has a large effect on performance. Last year I bought 3 for customers and they all complained how slow their new computers were. Plus they all complained about all the trial-ware pop-ups, redundant software to the point that I had to reformat the drive an install the OS only. The difference is like night and day.

Krall

and its got the earthwatts 500W PSU which is of good quality

i say /thread.

P.S. the general argument is flawed in that; you are trying to say its "cheaper" to by a pre-built that physically costs more,

yet building your own is cheaper part for part. Come back when you have a real argument.

I disagree. First off, I have built machines for a long time. The reason I purchased my XPS 630 was that it came out cheaper than if I had bought the parts separately and put them together myself (corporate discount and decade long relationship with Dell). My setup is exactly what I would have put together myself except that it comes with a 4-year complete care warranty. As good as part manufacturers warranties are, I doubt they often do replacements for a spilt drink on the innards of a tower. Additionally, the 630 is overclockable and upgradeable.

Even if I could get a prebuild for the same price I would build it anyway.

Likewise. The cost is just an added benefit ;)

*FLAME FLAME FLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAME!!!!*

Building PCs are cheaper, means you can upgrade them later and know what fits where, and will usually result in a better machine!!!!!! *END FLAME!!!*

I see every second thread on this forum is somebody having a really annoying problem with their build like everything is right but nothing happens and stuff like that which is extremely furstrating.I say is it really worth it over $50 that you can pay to a shop to build it for you?Thinker_145
Why do people build their own computers?

How about this: why do people build their own custom cars or motorcycles?

Long answer short: For that personal touch...for the learning experience...for a sense of accomplishment...or simply for the (bleep) of it.
