This is the usual reaction from a fanboy, and a person with no experience of the card being spoken of.

The GTX 480 was nothing more than a cut down 580, and very slight cut down at that, does it make you mad that the 480 in my 2500k rig hangs with 7870XT and 7950's?

That is significant bang for your buck.

The cooler cost 45 pounds all together, never exceeds 75c.

Now, for a person with lower than a 600w PSU, sure the 480 is a bad choice, you are just dissmissing the point, and clearly show a large bias.

AMD655

there is and never was any bang for buck with the 480.  If there was, most nvidia fanboys wouldn't have purchased a 460 instead.  The 480 is slightly slower than a 570 which is about 10-15% slower than a 580.  It is a good card, infact I was looking for a good deal on one on craigslist, but I wasn't lucky.  But my point stands, it wasn't a good bang for buck card during its time, nobody will agree with that.  You have dodged the question long enough, where are the good bang for buck nvidia cards?

Well, to be honest, the new AMD 9970 will probably destroy the titan by a good 20% but it will cost as much as a titan as well.

This was when i was really pushing the GTX 480 on  air cooling, almost hitting 1GHZ on the core from 700mhz.

good for you, but overclocking doesn't mean jack especially when every card OC's better or worse.  My 7970 oc's to 1217 mhz on the core, from its stock 925 mhz, the memory hits 1950 mhz from its stock of 1375mhz.  You can see my name in the benchmark thread.  The voltage is 1300mV when ocd but around 1175 when at stock.  I paid $300 for the card and got 3 free games with it included.  At that clocks, it is pretty close to a stock 780, but obviously im not going to keep it that high.  That sir is bang for buck.  Good day.

Yet again, dissmissing it all, the 480 is what.. 120 pounds?

What can you buy for 120 pounds that comes anywhere close to it's performance?

Overclocking it just gives it far more performance.

Stay biased.

I think the bigger question is: why do you care? I chose the GTX 770 because I've always had good experiences with EVGA cards and it was $100 off.

120 pounds is about $190 here, where can I get a geforce 480 for that much?  I can't get that in Canada, not in the USA either.  I saw the 6970 selling for $165 a month ago, and didnt think that was a hot deal either.  Id go for a radeon 7870xt (tahiti core) for $230 plus 2 free games over a 480 gtx at that price.

Anyways lets say you're right, the 480 is a great bang for buck card and I can find it on newegg for $190.  What other nvidia cards offered good bang for buck?

actually its on even footing with a 7970 ghz while costing $100 more, comes with 1gb less vram and has a 256bit mem bandwidth.  I wouldn't buy it if I were going for a new card.

The 9000 series is 28nm so I really doubt that (that would mean the 9970 would be 45% faster than a 7970ghz all while staying 28nm).

The ACX 760 offers 670/7970 performance out of the box while only costing $260 (thats an incredible bang for your buck). Up untill a few weeks ago (USA), the 660 SC/650 ti boost where $180/160 while the 7850/7870 where $20-30 more

$100 more? Where are you getting your ridiculously biased info? The 4GB version of the GTX 770 is 100 more. The 2GB GTX 770 is around the same price as the 7970 ghz. Get your facts straight.

Here we go with 3GB vs 2GB, yeah, and not a single game maxes 2GB yet at 1080p.

Skyrim is not counted, 1 game does not dictate to what a card can do, as Skyrim can max 3GB also.

You get a free game with the 770, you also get enhanced features, PhysX and CUDA, yes CUDA is used on some games.

The only reason i steered clear of AMD this gen, is the runt frames issues, and really bad frame latency.

Otherwise, their price/perf is really good, they are also power hogs, and run hot (reference cooler)

Edit, misread first bit.

the 7970 will be 2 years old by the time the 9970 releases, so its not a stretch to say a good 40% faster.  The 760 may be fast, but it comes with 2gb vram and a 256bit mem bandwidth.  Its a decent deal, but saying that it is a good bang for buck is a stretch, considering it would be pretty cheap for nvidia to manufacture a card like this.  The 7950 comes with 3gb vram and a 384bit mem bandwidth (same as a 780) and is $30 more expensive.  Which card do you think will last longer, the 7950 or the 760?  Keep in mind, once the 7950 is oc'd it beats an oc'd 760 pretty easily.

GTX 580 and 480 are 384-Bit, i do not see you jollying those up, quite the opposite.

Look, AMD do great, Nvidia has more features, but currently, both sides have great cards at their price points, even TITAN holds value, it is a K20 TESLA GPU, it has the same compute performance as it.

It will rip GCN a new hole in compute tasks.

The 780 is a gaming version of it with half the Vram, and for the price, yet again, an outstanding card, where it is barely slower than TITAN in games.

I buy Nvidia because:

  • I've never had a problem with any Nvidia card I have bought.
  • GeForce.com
  • GeForce Experience giving alerts on when new full drivers and also beta drivers have been released.
  • Asus, Gigabyte, and EVGA are very trusted companies that I have never taken issue with.
  • CUDA
  • Physx
  • Automatic recommended settings through GeForce experience
  • GPU Boost and GPU Boost 2.0 (on newer cards)

So two predictios and a gamble is the reason why you troll every nvidia thread..... (good logic).

You literally go into every nvidia thread and scream two predictions (384bit/3gb vram) and something thats not guranteeed (overclocking) and state it as a reason why you shouldn't buy a legit product. Thats why me (AMD card owner) can't take you seriously..... (two predictions and a gamble is just going a little overboard).

how much faster is a 7970 than a 6970?  40% seems about right, and the gap between those 2 cards was like exatly 1 year.  The 9970 will be released 24 months after the 7970....that is something to be excited about even if they are on the same 28nm process.  Sorry but 384 bit  and 3 gb vram is a monstrous amount, its funny that only the 780 has something like that but the 770 doesn't.  The titan comes with 512bit and 5 gb vram, that is awesome but the card is over priced.

WOW you're such a unique and special snowflake.

I'm sure all evidence pointing towards Nvidia's incompetence will be ignored because of that statement.

I'm on my first AMD card at the moment, as is my dad. Better bang for the buck when we were buying is all. I just hope that AMD puts some serious time and money into their 3D drivers, as I'll be getting and Oculus Rift asap. I'll gladly sell this card and get another nVidia card if it means much better support for 3D and Oculus Rift...

damn son....its even more of a rip off than i thought.  If the the 9970 costs that much, it is guaranteed to come with a 512bit bus, and at least 6 gb vram

Because my old 9800GTX was jammed inside a tiny HP tower for 2 years before dying from excessive wear and tear (more like heat, as the old case wasn't very well ventilated). I could finally max out Company of Heroes and I was so happy to see how gorgeous and smooth the game looked and ran. I've been using their cards since 2007 and never went back. 7900, 9800, 480 and now 570 though I am curious about what AMD might put out to compete with the 700 series.

Edit- I meant the 9800GTX inside my HP tower, not the 480, sorry.
