Why does Vista need more memory for games while XP doesn't?

So games would run better than XP I assume. Off-topic, but is it worth keeping Vista 64 bit or should I go for Windows 7?

this is a little bit controversial but yes XP should run games better than vista. The problem is that vista adjusts memory usage on the fly so even though it takes more memory at idle, it doesn't necessarily take more while running a game. However, every head to head test I have seen shows a slight performance drop with vista. On the plus side there is dx10 support in vista and not in XP so better graphics are possible with vista. More importantly though is that dx10 is much more efficient at rendering in certain cases so if you are graphic card limited and not memory limited, then vista can give a better performance. As far as windows 7, its still in beta but appears to be a better platform. I think if you don't already have vista then I would wait for windows 7 but if you do have vista then don't switch over to a beta version of 7 that isn't fully supported yet.

There is no reason to switch a well working OS for a beta version that runs out in a couple of months.

There is zero reason to use Vista, all games still support XP and if it's an older game it might not even work on Vista!

I dunno about all the other guys here, but with only 2gigs of RAM I've never had a single problem running any game, and I went from Crysis to games as far back as Pandemonium. That's 1996. Vista Home Premium x64.

I have vista and have had very little problems since the first service pack. I really think Vista got a bad wrap because of all the initial bugs when it was first released. I already preordered 3 copies of Windows 7 because you can purchase the upgrade for 50 bucks for a limited time only. I wont install it for a while though until it gets full driver support and all of the bugs worked out. As far as memory is concerned I have 4 gigs and Vista runs flawlessly.

The way the OS was coded makes it use more RAM than the same operation in XP would take.

Memory Management in Vista is not the same as it was implemented in XP.

This is why 3rd-party utility developers make a lot of money, because they write code to make your OS work the way it should have when it came on to the market.:P

I say keep it, I'm definitely keeping mine for at least a few more years.

Windows 7 runs out March 2010.

The old beta runs out August or end of July I think.

A short answer to the TC [here], Although old it does explain Vista Management.

Vista doesn't need more memory for games than XP. Vista uses more of the memory you have by default, leaving less memory for your games to use.
