Why don't any developers just remake Planescape Torment with modern graphics?

Seriously though. It would sell like hotcakes! Most PC RPG fans would buy it. And if it was a quality remake, it could prove to be the best PC RPG ever made.

It would seem that remaking Planescape Torment would be an obvious choice, so how come it hasn't been done?

Originality? To be fair, I prefer sequels to remakes - at least they take a genre/story and try to advance it. Remakes are lazy in movies and lazy in games. They might look better, but a given game's moment has passed - players and genres move on.

I honestly don't think it would do well, sadly enough. The game is deliberately paced, to put it kindly, and many gamers simply wouldn't have the patience to follow it through. For another thing, with the vast amount of dialogue in PST, it would cost a fortune to voice it all, and you know it would have to be voiced to appeal to the modern taste.

As good as PST and its like were, I really think that style of game is a thing of the past.

:(

I think for the most part they just know they will never capture that same feeling that made the game great in the first place. Devs don't dare touch legendary games in the fear they will probably just screw it up. It's best to leave whats passed in the past and enjoy it for what it was.

It'd be cool to have games with that level of detail in the story and the environment, with modern gameplay mechanics. Too bad it's mostly breadth and no depth these days.

I disagree that all the dialogue would have to be voice-acted. Maybe just the first sentence of every conversation could be voice-acted. If the graphics were top notch, the combat all made real-time, and the dialogue and story all kept the same, it would do extremely well sales-wise.

Just look how good the Resident Evil remake on the Gamecube was. It was excellent and made the game so much better than the original.

Because there's really no need.

broken_bass_bin

exactly.

the game is great as it is. it's a cult cIassic; it doesn't need cosmetic modernization to get crowd approval and recognition.

cinematic tricks sell games, with or without quality stories. there's no need to drag a story out of a cult cIassic.

First of all it would not work. They would almost have to make it mainstream in other words they will get alot of hate and even reviewers will tell them to go away that they should not touch a "old classic". Then you have the work you need to put into the game... The game is huge... To make it all in 3d and that is without making new content for the game... It would still take years of work no dev team is going put down the time to do that... Even more when so many things can fail so that the game will get burned. In the end it come down to... Why should they remake it in 3d? The game is way to complex by todays mainstream standards and most people that like planescape torment at this point dont care about the graphics. So that brings one back to the point... Why? It wont sell very good due to its complexity... They cant change the depth or complexity because there would be a fire storm going for the dev HQ. Overall... No do not poke a great old game... even more when its one of the if not the best rpg ever made.

I think the game looks fine, the artstyle holds up well on its own. If anything, it need more voice acting. The voice acting in Planescape was very rare, but it was incredible when it was spoke.

You are making Planescape seem like a very hard game to get into when its not... Its really not that complex at all. The story is complex, but easy to understand. The gameplay is just as simple as any standard modern RPG.

Most people have a hard time getting into the game both by story and gameplay. Like my brother... He had no idea what he was doing. Why he was doing it... And why things would not die when he attacked them \o/ and he like more action rpg games.

If someone can play a game like Dragon Age or The Witcher, then they can play Planescape.

They could do a Requel. You know, a remake disguised as a sequel like Bioshock was to System Shock 2.

The combat in PST is already real-time but if you're talking "real-time"like Mass Effect or Fallout:Oblivion combat...dear god, no. Just no.

I really hope they never do a remake, they'd only screw it up stream-lining it to appeal to the much coveted groundling audience.

PST is fine just how it is. If modern gamers can't deal with a little reading, or the graphics (which actually still look quite good in high rez.) then tough. Sorry, butI have little to no sympathy for the ADHD Generation. There are already enough crappy (and a few decent), "RPGs" being made for that particular demographic, thanks.

Now, if they made another game in the Planescape setting I'd be okay with that but not a direct sequel, prequel, and most of all, not a remake.

I don't think classic games should be rehashed again and again for the sake of graphics overhauls, that's one of the things Nintendo keep doing that bugs me.

An Indie group put together an Ultima V remake on the DS engine. Probably something similar to that would have to happen for a remake of this title to happen.

Its likely they would just end up making a FPS for the consolites, like they did with Fallout and XCOM.

plain and simple

you dont think there are dozens of modders out there that don't want what you want? They do, but they get slapped with a "cease and desist" letter the second they go public.

publishers and developers would get outright sued for it, and no one is going to drop millions for the rights to an old game that, frankly, wouldnt sell more than a million copies.

Doesn't Atari hold the DnD license?

Anyway, they could, but then you'd have to deal with even more acerbic posters than in this thread, and frankly, a remake's just not worth all that trouble.

It's really pointless to remake an interactive novel. I mean the only thing they can do is to change the font of texts. Because PS: T is nothing but text.

Good God I'm getting that!

I don't think Planescape needs an update, the graphics are retro and it's the writing, the story, the world, the lore and the characters that give the game that magic touch. Modern devs would just butcher the game, even devs such as CDProjekt wouldn't live up to that level of writing.

It wouldn't sell crap. The market has advanced where the storytelling methods used would put off large amounts of people and if they reimagined it would be a royal ****storm beyond just making combat more fun or something like that. With that said I would love to see it done if the company does it like the Monkey Island remakes.

I seriously doubt there is a big market for this kind of game. Wasn't Obsidian talking about remaking it? I think it was probably just wishful thinking though.
