Like the other guy said, almost all console games will eventually be emulated on the PC. You can play most PS2 games right now if you wish, and at higher resolutions with AA to make them look better. If you absolutely cannot wait then go ahead and get a console but I would recommend a 360.
Between my friends insane game collection and my own, we found that 3 out of 4 cross platform games run better on my 360 in terms of frame rate and it has a lot less frame rate drops during heavy action sequences. We have verified this to be true on several games that we share including Oblivion, Fallout, Dragon Age, GTA, & Madden09. We assume that this is an inherent issue with the PS3 and it extremely annoying during heavy action scenarios like large battles when the frame rate is critical to gameplay.
The PS3 is playable, mind you, and if you did not know any better it might not bother you as much but even my friend admits that if he could go back he would have gotten a 360. As for exclusives, they are a wash. Both consoles have good exclusives so there is no point to favor either. On the 360 you can get Mass Effect, Halo, Fable, Forza, L4D, GoW, & Lost Odyssey. The PS3 will net you Valkyria Chronicles, God of War, Gran Tourismo, Killzone, MGS, and uncharted. Ironically, I think that the 360 has more JRPG's than the PS3 at this point in time but I would need to verify that. So the 360 wins purely on the basis that games perform better on the console and it has a cheaper entry point especially if you dont care for blue ray which is probably just as well with downloadable services flooding the market.
The 360 arcade version was on sale for $99 a few weeks ago through amazon and walmart and a used 20GB hard drive can easily be had for about $25. An 10ft HDMI 1.3 cable costs $4 shipped on amazon. I will wager that the $99 will probably happen again later this year or early next year if you are patient.
