Because I got bored of CoH/CoV awhile ago, and I don't feel like paying for it again. Right now I'm doing a 10 day trial for WoW, but I probably won't end up buying it.

I play Guild Wars occasionally but kind of stopped because I'm getting less and less time to play games so now I focus more on fps and rpg games than mmorpg because it takes awhile to advance and gain equipment.

I have played Ogame for about 6 months. It is a free online spacegame, based more on text than on graphics but it is really cool. However, it is in real time so I came to point where I set the alarm clock at 4:15 am because my ship was arriving. I know, it sounds stupid but it's true. I had a hard time to quit with the game  and when I blew up my 9 planets, I died a little  so much work I had put into them... pfff

Don't buy the expansion for WoW unless you have a level 60, or you really really want to make a drainea or blood elf guy.

1. Monthly subscriptions

1.  There are so many great single-player games on my "to-play" list that I don't have time for the online ones.

2.  Atmosphere and story are two of the BIG draws for me in a computer game.  Good gameplay is great too, of course, but I want to be drawn into another world for a little while...and there's nothing less realistic than roaming a midevil looking countryside while passing other player-characters controled by 13 year old kids using leet speak in the chat...only to realize that the story is also watered down because of the limitations of such free-form gameplay.

3.  Montlhy subscriptions.

4.  Afraid I'll get hooked on games that are leveling/equipment grinds.

How can you say MMO's aren't atmospheric?? They are some of the only games that can really draw me and make me feel like I'm actually the charachter I'm playing. I donno about WoW, but CoH/CoV have very interesting back stories to them, and a lot of the missions you do in the game tell a story.

Thinking about giving EQ2 a try, I was a big fan of the first.. But not sure..  One thing is I am not sure if I want to waste the money for $40 for it when I can get the original online.. Then another part I think what if I like it? I would end up paying for more then to get the expansions..

1. monthly subscriptions! i hate paying for somthign i bought once already.

2. I find i would get to confused with all the different types of weapons and what not.

3. I have more fun mindlessly shooting people in FPS, also relistics mods/games are funner.

4. I dont like fantasy stuff, though i think i could get into a game like oblivion.

Also ik its not a mmorpg but ill be getting STALKER because it has that RPG feel with FPS elements.

I played WoW for awhile, but once I got past level 50, I just got kinda bored with it.

Plus, it is pretty expensive in the end, and probably not worth it in the long run.  And I was getting frustrated because friends and other people in my guild would be leveling more quickly than me because I wasn't willing to dedicate 8 hours of my day to playing.

Yeah, I just don't think MMORPGs are for me.  But, it was pretty fun while it lasted.

There seems to be too much commitment.  Not that commitment is a bad thing, it's just that I don't want to spend all my free time trying to get my monthly money's worth out of game that depends on my internet connection.  I like RPGs, but I'll keep them offline to my own hard drive.

1. Just about every decent MMORPG requires an outrageous monthly fee

2. Gameplay usually degenerates into pointless grinding to get a level/item that isn't much different than what you had before.

3. PvP is generally based more on luck, lag, items, and level than on skill or strategy

4. I hate the pathetic online communities. I play games for fun, and dealing with over-caffenated twelve year olds is definately not fun.

I'm not entirely sure how people become addicted to these games. I've tried Ashron's Call (1 and 2), Guild Wars, World of Warcraft and a few others in the past that I can't recall the names of....

The initial look and reviews of the games are what attracted me to them and after getting my hands on them and playing for a few months, the appeal of the games wear thin; to the point that I actually shudder at the thought of playing them.

Over the past three months after I finally got my hands on WoW, I was so entertained by the little things that it kept me playing. I tried out several different character and classes and trained through many different skills, but it was all the same in the end. The PvP grew more annoying to deal with the higher the level I got to because no matter what skills I used, it just always seemed I was getting my butt handed to me or the people that I was playing with are just playing retarded and don't know how to play as a team because everyone just runs their own way to constantly get slaughtered.

Also, after getting up to level 40 with my main (I have a few level 20 characters, too) and obtaining hundreds in gold, mastering my skills best I can and getting my hands on the best equipment I could....it just didn't feel any different then when I was starting out with basic beginner items. I guess the sparkle and shine of the game vanished for me. I stopped my subscription and within a week or two, my account will be closed.

I enjoy my time online more in Gemstone IV in a non-graphic environment (that's right...an actual MUD). Perhaps SIMU (company that owns and runs Gemstone IV) will get their MMORPG (Hero's Journey) up and running in 2007 like they hope and I'll give that one a try. But until then, I'll stick with my MUD.

i'm obsessive - very obsessive

when i played everquest, i didn't become addicted - i became obsessed, and it literally nearly killed me

i went up to over 300lbs, lost all my friends and probably caused myself irreperable psychological damage (i am very nearly regular again in most respects now, but i am still pretty screwed up!)

but that's not what bothers me, what bothers me is that, given the choice, i would do it all again

all of it

...so i'm not giving myself that choice

  1. Time restriction, what I mean is if you are a person who have a job that requires you to work during peak times in all mmos, it will make it harder for you to find a group to be able to do quests.  all mmos do require you to be in a group to do some of the quests.  with the lack of people during midnight hours your chances of getting into a group is way smaller then on peak time.
  2. Lack of convince.  There is really no convince at all in mmos.  In single player games, you are able to save the game then hours later you could come right back where you are were and start playing.  There is no waiting for you to get into groups, you immediately start playing.  Take my word for it, there are many times in EQ2 where I have waiting hours, sometimes a week to get into a group to do quests.  When I do find a group, its not the quest I really want to do.  Single RPGs never does this, I could do any quest at any time whenever I want.  Without no waiting for hours for groups.

Forgive the OT post here.

Sully, that line is from a movie in the 80s (pre-Kurt) called "Highlander". It may well have its origins earlier than that however, the first time I heard it was in Highlander.

from an older post...

"

I got no problem paying a monthly fee, I played 3 MMOs at the same time for almost a year a while ago.

My analysis of the incompetence of MMOs is simple - I belive that the groundbreaking definition of game... In any sort of game. Not just computer games, but card games, board games, childrens game, mind games and all other kinds of games, is that the game can end and that it can be won. Not all games can be lost tho. But all games can end.

However, in MMOs like WoW it just does never end. It's already been discussed about many people. It's the fabled "carrot on a stick" syndrom. Your virtual avatar is chasing goals which can be conqured but never be realised, because it never ends. Therefore the game has no meaning.

Upon playing MMOs it's biggest force is the immersive feeling. Suddenly your in this other world, however while your immersed in this world you dont realise how much time you spent doing stupid crap and repetitive tasks - Doing things that you dont enjoy for ultimately getting a reward(a carrot). After getting the carrot you feel that your tedious time spent playing(grinding, moving around from point a to point b) was worthwhile because you got the reward.
I hate this. I think that every second you play a game that it should be fun.

The thing is that MMOs are just not fun. You do these things that are required of you - Tasks and challanges which don't test your brain or your eye cordination. It' has been proven in countless studies that playing hard strategic games or fast paced shooters can increase your capacitiy to think or help you concentrate, and that fast paced action games like counter-strike will improve your reaction time."

Because I have played them and they're the proverbial carrot-on-a-stick. No matter how hard you try and reach that carrot(best gear), you never will(new and better gear). There's also the fact that they soak up so much time and often feel like a chore.

I don't have enough time. I love MMO's, and I really like the new EQ II expansion. I played the hell out of it one weekend but then haven't had a chance to pick it up since. They require a lot of time... I thought I could wedge it in with the other games I was playing, but it's not working so well :)

I have put a few hours into Anarchy Online. I have also played the original Ever Quest. I did not like Ever Quest but it was not the game elements so much that made the difference for me. I enjoyed AO much more because of the community of people within game. To me, the fun of  Anarchy Online is helping people and enjoying the camaraderie. I cared much less about PVP and over all uberness of my particular toon. I never truly became addicted or obsessed but I did find myself playing AO more then any other game I was playing at the time. I guess it comes down to maturity and what you expect from a game. A game for me is a past time to do in my free time. Something to allow me to relax. I am ok with the monthly subscription because of the amount of enjoyment I recieve from the game. At $12 a month AO is cheap for the amount of time I spent playing it, 3 hours at a time on weekdays sometimes and longer on a nice laid back Saturday. Not every day but enough that $12 is a bargain.

My 2 cents.

i used not not play 'em because they have no end. but then i got into wow... and i got addicted. I feel I wasted 60 days played at level 60. but I do feel I broke my addiciton when I quit raiding. Now I juts play for fun. And now my new style of playing wow is 'play until the level cap and until you get an epic mount'. so right now, I'm just leveling up to 70, grinding out 5000g for an epic flying mount and then quitting... until the next expansion comes out. I consider reaching the level cap as 'the end'. so now my original excuse of how they have no end is meaningless, when you define your own goals. Just Keep your goals within reach. If you have a goal to keep upgrading your armor to the best armor... then of course it will never end. If your goal is to reach the level cap or obtain an epic mount then it will end.

if they added more classes to wow i'd probably play again. i was disappointed when i heard the BC would have new races but not classes. i know it's hard to balance out the classes but new races are just window dressing. a class plays pretty much the same no matter what race you are. and i'd also like deeper class customization. when i make a toon i'd like there to be a way to make him different from the thousands of others that play the same race and class.
