It's the way the lore is written. Fereldan people have brit accents, Dwarves have american accents, Dalish have Welsh accents and so on. David Gaider the writer mentioned this a while back I think.

iirc Bioware is a Canadian company, and arent there a lot of Brits in Canada?

Also, Dragon Age had a lot of French accents as well.

Well...almost everybody is British, and that includes the Dwarves and Elves. I recently talked to an elf in the game and she had the most noticeable British accent so far.

Simple answer? Because most every fantasy movie, book, and game can't free itself from the originality-killing shackles of Tolkien.

The worst part is when people have British accents that have no business having British accents. See: Prince of Persia the movie.

Erm, actually I think a lot of people spoke with a British accent in DAO as well. This is a long-established design decision on the part of Bioware: people from Ferelden speak with a British accent, while people from Orlais speak with a French accent. Bioware devs also said elves spoke with American accent in DAO, but they've since changed this so that Dalish elves speak with Welsh accent.

Well. I'm really enjoying the game once I got pass the performance issues with my (Nvidia) video card. Arenthil is my favorite so far as far as character design goes. She looks really cool. And the dwarf you get to meet, ahem, is a pretty hilarious dude. He has charm. :P

I thought the little Elf you get as a playable character had an Irish accent. Anyway Dwarves don't suit the American accents. But yeah, Hawk's accent is annoying. I'm not a fan of English accents. They don't suit a hardned warrior imo.

Ferelden humans have always had English accents...

The same way Dwarves and Elves have always had North American accents, however Dalish Elves now have Irish and Welsh accents.

I know, but the accents are different.

To be more clear, when I think of British accents I don't think of how the Welsh ones sound.

Because someone in a massive suit of plate army pitching up with a wonderful Chicago accent just doesn't quite work. All the medieval shenanigans happened in Europe, so it's a logical theme to stick with in fantasy realms which are generally quite...medieval.

The American get the others games, so it's not really a problem ;) .

Even though most, especially Alistair and Morrigan had British Accents, how do you not remember these? I didn't like hearing an American accent in DAO, it sounded weird and unnatural to me given the game world.

There is no such thing as a "british" accent. Unless you mean it features an array of various UK accents, in which case that is fine.

We have scouse, we have gordy, we have scottish, we have wesh, we have cockney, we have many many accents. We do NOT have a british accent!

A reasonable explanation is that the game takes place in the Free Marches, which is AFAIK a separate nation from Ferelden. I really like how the nations are distinct too, Rivain (Isabela's country) seems to be filled with Gypsy types, Antiva (Zevran's) seems like a Spanish sort of country, Orlais is French. As for the Dalish, is it reasonable to assume that different clans have different accents? Dalish elves are known to be made up of different clans that have nothing to do with each other apart from the fact that they aren't human slaves.

See: Prince of Persia the movie.dos4gw82

You should never wish that upon anyone. British accents aside, everyone was white in that movie, but supposed to be Persians....

As far as the topic is concerned, I've always thought of fantasy in terms of the old world. Britain is certainly of the old world and America (well USA) is not. I also think that British, being the King's English, gives more credit to a monarchic society. You don't see many presidents or prime ministers in a fantasy world, but kings and queens. I just think an American accent makes things sound more modern, which doesn't jive well with a fantasy game (imo).

Even within the City i live in Worcester i sound distinctly different from the City dwellers due to living in a village 4 Miles from the town centre. I have noticed apart from in the South, Americans tend to not have such strong accents if any at all it is rather odd tho it makes for easier listening in some cases. I think the British sounding accent adds more character but i have noticed a lot of Americans complaining about British accents recently. Dawn of War Retribution is an example many people Moaning about the General having a strong accent. In that titles case it pays to remember where Warhammer was created. What is this complaint anyhow its not like you can not understand it? Is this more national pride IE "Why British when we speak English to"! Well why not?

Because no body in medieval times had an American accent. Therefore a game with huge medieval influences shouldn't have people with American accents.

Why should I stop stereotyping? "we Americans" part of your reply was amusing though. I don't see what the British Empire has to do with anything I wrote. Especially when you imply that the spread of the empire is constructed of British people.
