Why is my ping so unsteady in game?

Right now i currently only own CoD4, and the indy lego and kungfu panda pack...what game should i get for around 20 dollars? I played mass effect and oblivion and wasn't really that awed w/ them, recommend me a good game Thanks!

dont get assassins creed, as good as it looks its horrible, the entire game is just a routine that you keep doing and it gets boring as all hell

get the Orange Box. 5 games in 1. it has hl2, episode 1 and 2, portal, and team fortress (online multiplayer). best game for value.
