I was going to pick up Quake 4, but many people have told me that the multiplayer isn't as good as Quake 3. Why is this?

/thread...although it is very apparent that the mp wasn't the main focus, it was for good reason. IMO the single player is fantastic fun

Multiplayer isn't worse - the problem is that it's exactly the same. Singleplayer; nothing wrong with it.

Quake 4 was the sequel to Quake 2. Quake 3 was made to combat the Quake 2 multiplayer players Unreal stole.

The multiplayer in Quake 4 was basically a port of Quake 3, People had seen it all before.

Quake 4 wasn't made for multiplayer. It's a great single-player game though.

If you want multiplayer, your best option is to sign up to Quake Live instead.

I've been trying to get hold of Quake 4 for the last month or two. I'm really surprised it's not available as a budget title :(

I thought the multiplayer was pretty decent in the Q4 demo. I know it's still popular with a lot of competitive players too, so it must have done something right.

I love Quake Live as it is, but it would be great to have an option to play on something closer to the Q4 graphics engine. I'm sure that would attract more gamers with high-end systems.

So, is this game still popular at ALL? I log onto Quake Live and see only a handful of people. Please tell me this game ain't dead. :(

...heck, I log onto Unreal 2K4 and see thousands online.

It's not dead. There's still a very active community. It could just be down to the different server models. The way they've set things up prevents just anyone from starting up a server and chucking on a load of bots, so it could appear less populated at first glance.

TBH I've got a bit of an issue with UT physics (plus I was one of the suckers who bought the near identical UT2k3 :x), so I never got UT2k4 and can't really compare.

I think the main reason is because Q4 had different developers, and not the Original devs from Q3

Well Quake 3 was made purely for multiplayer, while in Quake 4, which focuses on singleplayer, it was tossed in to prevent whining from gamers that think everything should have multiplayer.

Like everyone else said, Quake 3 was Multiplayer and Quake 4 is a high res expansion of Quake 2 :-P Q4 used the same engine as Doom 3, and alot of people could not handle the graphic capabilities right off the bat when it came out. Plus, Q4 has an eerie similarity to the Doom 3 story/feel, just different graphic set.

/revive dead thread pointlessly

I tried the multiplayer... feels richer and more "full" than Quake Live (which is still boomin! BOOYA!), but at the same time it feels much heavier as well. Slower, it seems like. Still, not bad at all, and there are still people playing.

agreed. The singleplayer was crazy fun, and honestly the multiplayer was sufficiant. I think people tend to romanticize Quake 3's multiplayer for some reason

When you look back on the series, though, there is only one game that doesnt really belong and that is Quake III

I don't like Quake 4 mp, it's kinda like UT3, it feels like you are kinda in slime when you shoot. There is a slight delay. Quake3/live do not have this problem.
