I don't really see why people are loving this game so much. After I put in 40 hours, I was over with most of the content this game has to offer except the Radiant Quests which are more boring than seeing paint dry. Most of the other quests are fetch-or-kill type. Why do people claim "OMG Skyrim has so much content all gamers went MIA for months!" I don't find anything interesting to do since most quests suck, there is nothing interesting in the environment and all that detail Todd Howard said was in the game, where the hell is it? The enemy variety is miniature and most people don't have any sort of personality. The first dozen hours were awesome, but then it turned out really boring. Oblivion had way better quests, even if there were no random encounter, much more beautiful environments, so much enemy variety and better NPCs, even if they looked like clay models. Oblivion intoduced me to RPGs and I was hooked for a hundred hours straight.

So the question is, why do people like it so much? And please don't tell me it's so much fun to roleplay...

No idea. But then again, I also have no idea how anyone could play Oblivion for a hundred hours.

You could make the same point about WoW. It's the sheer amount of content combines with the desire to complete as much of it as possible that make for an addictive and immersing experience that's helped by the quality of the story and atmosphere. It also had the advantage of riding on the popularity of the previous games which added to the hype.

To me it's because it's crazy immersive and so nice to look at. I have not finished it but really liked what I did play.

I won't tell you why I liked it because you wouldn't listen and I don't really care if you like it or not. I will say however I liked the last 3 Elder Schrolls games for over 100 hrs each and will continue to do so. Just sayin'.

Think about it like this. You got bored after 40 hours. What single player games last you 40 hours in this day and age? You'd be lucky to get over 5 hours from your average AAA game these days.

Kind of liked oblivion..How ever i thought over time they would improve the combat..Its so boring it drives me to tears. Why i havent touched the game in mounths..Id rather play reckoning with the better combat..Its amazing all these years an elder scrolls people cant get the combat right..Wish they would try some thing new like my boys on the reckoning team tried to do..At least it was a fresh idea..Shame not more people took to there game..The game wasnt bad at all..

It's the atmosphere as well as the fact that the skill curve for the game is a flat line(which is a turn off only for a select few gamers), and on PC it arguably has more mod support than all other games in the past 10 years combined. As has been stated previously, Skyrim is like a virtual skinner box, you know every action you make in the game helps to work toward the next little "reward nugget" to satisfy your ongoing addiction. I personally found that vanilla Skyrim is so awful that it actually makes me sick(as in I actual feel like vomiting[I wish I were joking] when playing which could be due to the uncanny valley effect) but I bought the game knowing it would have tons of top notch mods and incredible mod support for many years to come.

Wouldn't know I don't play Bethesda games in their vanilla form. Maybe add some player mad content to spruce it up a bit?

I have already put over 100 hours into the game and barely scratched the surface. But then again I play 2 hours maximum on a day. Some players play their games 12 hours straight. No wonder they get burned out so quick.

Because people like to run about and feel good in a fantasy land; and Skyrim does a pretty damn good job at it. You can argue that it's a real husk in terms of delivering a decent narrative, and providing a deep combat system, but that's not what Skyrim is outright trying to do.

Because Skyrim does what it sets out to do, immerse you in a PLAYER-driven fantasy land where you are the hero. An open world action "RPG" with freeroam certainly has its appeal to a lot of people, and Skyrim does a great job in that regard.

Ugh, I hated Oblivion's quests, leveling system, and copy + paste dungeons. If it weren't for mods, I wouldn't have even finished the main storyline for that game. Skyrim felt much better in every regard.

When the environments are so ugly, the characters so personality-deficient and where the world hardly responds to your deeds, how do you become immersed?

Why are rts games so popular? I hate that ****...

I am not a big fan of skyrim as well, but it is popular because it is a good game. Same with rts's, just because i hate the genre doesn't mean that the games themselves are bad, they just aren't for me. That also goes with just because i like a game doesn't mean that it is a good game. So when people say "it shouldn't be popular because i dont like it" and vice versa, it doesn't make much sense, because it might appeal to others.

Whether a game is good or bad is subjective but every game has areas which can be evaluated objectively.

It's worse than Oblivion IMO. It's more simplified and your freedom is incredibly restricted. It's a shame because a lot of people I know are like OMG Skyrim is such a good game but when I ask if they've played Morrowind or even Oblivion more often than not they won't have, which is a shame because Morrowind is 100x better. But when I suggest they play it they laugh because they can't fathom that a 10 year old game in the same series could be so much better than the one that's out now.

Why is Skyrim popular?

For the same reason Dancing With The Stars and Lady Gaga are popular.

A certain percentage of the population, likes whatever they're told to like. Even when the PS3 version was unplayable, sites like GS were praising it like it was the greatest thing since sliced bread, and there were actually people on the PS3 board who were unable to play it - but they were praising it anyway - because they thought they were supposed to.

That's why.

I actually played Morrowind. You know what? It is just a hiking sim. Some people adore it because they fell in love with the alien world. Liking it's art style and world is totally subjective. The core gameplay itself is terribad compared to SKyirm. There is totally no strategy involved. It is literally bad pixels hitting other bad pixels. Not saying Skyrim has top of the line gameplay. Far from it. There is still much room for improvement. But at least it has improved Morrwind's combat by a large margin. A weak point remains the level scaling. But it is better implemented in Skyrim then Oblivion. I also hate how Morrowind is praised for it's rpg parts. Baldur's Gate 2 blows it away in that regard. Hell Neverwinter Nights and Dragon Age: Origins do the same. Hell, Might and Magic 6 which is older then Morrowind is still WAAAYYY better then Morrowind.

To me it's because it's crazy immersive and so nice to look at. I have not finished it but really liked what I did play.

BSC14

has a really bad story line...most of the quest lines are "omg my boss died...hey newbie...i know we just met, and this is crazy: would u like to run *organization*" soooooo many fetch quests in 3 or 4 different dugeon types that all end up blending together. not to mention the clunky combat and how mary sue your character is...even more op than superman...only thing left is flying...oh wait u have a pet dragon

and its not really that nice to look at...even on pc with the high res pack that bethesda released, and after trying some of the graphic tweaks on steamworks, its still rather ugly for 2011...but thats what u get with a game that's so huge and fits 9 gig...

i really cant find the immersion factor that some people find in this game, its so clunky and all the characters are extremely bland. according to steam i put around 60 hours in the game and i cant remember a single characters name to save my life. ive given it its fair chance and ive tried it over and over with different mods hoping that it would be better than...fallout 3. idk maybe the whole cheesy characters and bad combat and horrid story lines with tons of fetch quests(read: same quest different flavor text) is lost on me? but i dont see why everyone says this is the 2011 goty

Well, I personally hate playing Skyrim (I gave it a 3.0/10 on this very site and consider it to be the worst game of 2011). But I believe I can answer those questions anyway.

Ugly environments: A lot of people say they find the vistas absolutely breathtaking
Personality deficient characters: I dont think everyone pays attention to that.
World hardly responding to your deeds: This is an issue with too many open world games out there, in fact, Skyrim does a better job that a lot of games, such as Assassin's Creed, Saint's Row and GTA.

As for ways Skyrim immerses people.

Its soundtrack, mostly loading screen free experience where the world isnt seperated into a lot of smaller areas, no shoehorning, the player driven nature of the game and the extra stuff you can do in the world, such as owning a house, work, get married (shudders), ect.

Yeah in all honesty this thread is kind of pointless. You ask about why its so great, then when someone tells you you shoot down their debate and list a bunch of reasons why you DON'T think its so great.

Its a straw man argument and is just completely pointless to ask why its great, then see a bunch of examples and have access to a bunch of reviews, if you just want to argue why you dislike it so much. I don't need to waste my time explaining why Skyrim is great if someone wants to ignore me or pretend my reasons aren't valid, even if they are shared by millions of gamers and dozens of game critics.

I guess it comes down to game genre preference. Some like myself really get into and love RPG's. I have put over 160 hours into Skyrim before I completed all the quests.

On an unrelated note, I'm just wondering, how long would it take to complete every quest and find every location and masks in the game? Like non randomly generated quests I mean.

I got somewhere to 230 hours in Fallout 3 and its DLC before I found every last unique weapon and character and bobblehead and finished every last quest there was.

The main story in Skyrim wasn't amazing. The rest was excellent though.

The best part for me was the sides quests and exploring the world.

Skyrim was a big improvement over Oblivion for dungeons. Tons of unique caves, ruins, and keeps to explore. I don't like the map and environment as much as Oblivion, but there is plenty to do.

The NPCs in town are much more engaging and interesting and help make the game feel alive.

The graphics and music are fantastic.

Mods are what make the game so much better. I haven't played it in a few months, but I know by the time I come back there will be hundreds of mods to add to the game. I was working on my own dungeon before I stopped playing.

I usually find those people who can't enjoy elder scrolls games or rpgs like them is that they are games that you get only what you put into them. Your hand will not be held, fun little sidequests and secrets will not jump out at you (I'm still finding awesome little tidbits and unmarked quests nearly 200 hours into the game), and mods you apply to the game for new, free, endless content.

There is almost no depth to the combat.

I used to say the same thing about all TES games (even though I still liked them), then I stopped playing warriors and went thief/hunter. Game suddenly got a lot slower, more thought provoking, and interesting again.

My current character is an theif/archer and while the combat is fun, I'd be lying if I said there was a lot of depth to it.

Toxic-Seahorse

There is almost no depth to the combat.

Is it really needed at the end of the day? What does this depth constitute?
