Seriously, they always seem to compare Morrowind from Oblivion which is pretty nonsense for me. I'm not defending or a fan boy of Oblivion in any sorts but it's a good game, a well-made game if you don't mind. It's not that I hate Morrowind, in fact I love it and I've played it in these past few years ago.

So, why the hate, is it because of the ****loads of bugs? Or is something from Morrowind missing in Oblivion?

P.S: I'm gonna sleep for a while so don't expect a response from me but leave a post/message anyways :)

Cheers.

It's quite different from Morrowind. Pisses Morrowind fans off I guess.

I prefer Oblivion, though Morrowind's setting and story were more interesting.

i think its because it seemed geared toward the mainstream gamer, but regardless it is still one of the best rpg's of all time.

vanilla oblivion isn't a bad game it just has its fair share of faults and some people could live with them, some couldn't.

the story was cliched and predictable, patrick stewart aside, the voice acting was poor, the main quest was repetitive and unimaginitve, a lot of the quests were just "go fetch" missions and the levelling system was fatally flawed.

its strength lies in the guild quests, the combat (in comparison to other games in the genre, although oblivion is less rpg more action/adventure game), the picturesque scenery, evocative music, the freedom you were afforded and the mod community

Oblivions not a bad game, but they stripped it down so much compared to morrowind.. they also made npcs, armor, weapons, etc level up with you instead of being able to go into a cave run past like 15 dudes that are 10 levels ahead of you and take a super kick ass katana or something thats at the end of the dungeon.. Morrowind was hardcore.. if morrowind had the combat system like oblviion it would of been the best game i have ever played.. EVER.

Like others have said, Oblivion was dumbed down a lot when compared to Morrowind and the fact that enemies and stuff levelled with you kind of ruins the idea that you get stronger. I hate running into random looters with godly armor...it defeats the purpose of having godly armor when everyone else has it.

Yeah, same here. I'd rather play Oblivion today than Morrowind, but Morrowind has a much better story and environments. I don't hate Oblivion at all. Oblivion is awesome. Could've been awesomer, but it's still Elder Scrolls..

The Good:

+Believable World Filled With Rich Atmosphere

+Good Visuals

+Very Moddable

The Bad:

1. Bugs:

a. Techinical Bugs

b. Occasional Crashes

c. Some NPC scripting issues

d. Some stuck bugs

e. Some go through object bugs (which leads to point d.)

2. Story

a. Dull story and storytelling

b. Bland Characters

c. Only what 10 or less voice actors? Everyone sounded the same

3. Gameplay

a. Boring and very repetitive combat

b. No other paths to take other than combat

c. Poor leveling system

d. Lacking rpg elements

e. Zero urge for exploration as loot and dungeons are scaled your level

f. Overpriced DLC (Horse Armor??? )

4.Graphics

a. A couple of missing textures

All imo of course. (xept for the bugs part).

I disagree about the exploration part. I had a great urge to explore the game world and see the different cities; it was fun not to use the fast travel option for a while. Morrowind's combat is a lot worse than Oblivion's... and Oblivion's graphics were the best when the game got released.

Oh, never mind about the graphics part. I misread your post.

Oblivion was promised to be a amazing RPG.. What I got was a weak sauce action adventure game with psudeo rpg elements.. We can do a check list for this... A) Leveling system everything levels with you. B) You can beat the main story line and 99% of the games side missions at level 2.. In fact it may even be easier.. C) The character development system is nonexistent.. The only meaningful choice that never changes is your birth sign.. Outside of that choose skills.. Race, etc etc.. All meaningless.. In fact with how the game is set up.. To be the most powerful you can. You must illogically build your character.. By placing the skills you will mainly use in your MINOR abilities rather then your major abilities.. So you don't level too fast and get the +5 modifers.. There is no real dialogue choices, nor any real consquences.. Last but not least no consquences for yoru actions in the game.. When you join the evil assassins guild.. Nothing is stopping you from being the champion of the goodly fighters guild.. C) Randomized environments means exploring is absolutely pointless... The game can be fixed with mods.. Its just complete weak sauce to me.. Not to mention of how shallow and stupid teh story was.. I didn't even about finishing the game.. People like to claim that games like Mass Effect 2 or Diablo 2 are not RPG's.. Yet it has more real rpg elements then Oblivion by far..

I hated Oblivion for a few reasons. 1. I always got nauseous for some reason just due to normal gameplay mechanics. Walking around in a town made me sick 2. It did not have an RPG feel to it. It was far to much of a sandbox, I prefer more stream lined RPG's 3. The game in general I just found very boring The 2 RPGs I can think of on the PC off the top of my head that are recent that I really loved we're Witcher & Dragon Age. Oblivion just was not my cup of tea

The urge to explore was there for me but at the beginning of the game but quickly lost interest when there was no uber loot to be found as they were scaled to your level, no difficult dungeon to return to when your beefed up.

I'm not comparing it to Morrowind or any game, I'm just saying I found the combat to be quite lacking, boring and repetitive.

I think of Oblivion similar to giving a 2 year old a shiny box, just as the kid will stare and glamor at the shiny box at first, when the box is opened and found out to be empty the kid quickly loses interest. Thats Oblivion, star strucking at first but soon becomes ground slamming.

I haven't really played much of Morrowind, but I surely have played a lot of Oblivion. If there's anything that needs to be fixed about Oblivion (other than the bugs) it's the way characters and NPCs look.

Oh, and they really need to change the combat system. I almost stopped playing Oblivion just because of it.

The vanilla game was bad quality all around. It only shines over Morrowind when you add a lot of mods.

No doubt. If we could just get a better combat system in Morrowind it would then beat Oblivion in every way, well except for graphics. It's a damn shame Bethesda made those modders cancel the Morrowind-Oblivion mod.

The main problem for Oblivion's combat besides how easy it was to win every fight by simply finding a rhythm to block the enemies strongest attacks and then return with your own was that the leveled monster encounters meant stats were pretty much worthless. Combat at level 1 with 20 skill in blade feels identical to combat at level 20 with 100 blade because the enemies were constantly being scaled upward to meet you. It made leveling up feel pointless, I mean whats the point in spending all that time getting blade to 100 if its just going to be the same experience at level 1 except actually a little tougher. It felt stupid and I hated leveling up because the more I did the stupider the game got. By endgame of Morrowind I actually felt like the Champion of the Imperial Legion that I was. I cut swaths through everything that came my way with the Lord's Mail and Chrysamere because I had put in work and was now the ultimate badass. There were still fights that were challenging but I definitely knew I could pretty much kick anyone's ass.

Vanilla Oblivion doesn't have the challenge and mystery of Vanilla Morrowind but once you add a few mods into oblivion it easily surpass morrowind. the problem with this is that a game should be able to stand on its own without the intervention of dedicated modders to add content for the game. Also the fact that everyone gets glass and daedric in vanilla oblivion was kinda lame since they were so damn rare in morrowind and a real adventure to get a full daedric set.

ESIV was an absolute blast to play dispite all of its faults. The problem, I believe, was that most things about game world were very well done, and this made everything that wasn't stuck out like a sore thumb. In other words, you were pulled out of the suspension of disbelief too often.

But if the improvements seen in Fallout 3 are any indication, ESV should have less of these problems.

The leveling system is what killed the game for me. I was waiting for Oblivion for years, and was so excited about it. It was shaping up to me one of my favorite RPGs of all time. But, as we know how hype goes, I really didn't enjoy my time playing. Something I experienced quite often in Morrowind. I stopped playing after a week and was totally let down.

The visuals, the world, and lore were simply astounding. There were times I just looked at the water and watched the sun cascade off my armor and the surroundings and marveled at how lovely it all looked.

Sadly though, the lack of challenge and the leveling system really was a sad state of affairs for me.

One of the biggest video game let downs ever for me.

I disliked it most because they got rid of the text (due to there thinking that they needed 100% voice-acted NPCs). Text makes you use your imagination, and I wasn't using my imagination as much in Oblivion, and that's why I didn't like it as much as other RPGs.

My dissappointment came when I saw the Argonians and Khajiit in Oblivion. In Morrowind, they were more beast like and had different qualities then other races, then they decided to make them all the same.

Morrowind had alot more variety of characters, landscape differences, weather, animals, plants, building styles, and a political environment that gave the world a sense of suspended of believe and not to mention the island was like 3x bigger then Oblivion world.

I "hate" it because it was an unworthy successor to Morrowind. Oblivion's story sucked, the gameplay sucked, and how they dumbed-down nearly every aspect of the game sucks. Oblivion's MQ + all the guild quests felt shorter than Morrowind's mainquest. Morrowind just has more content, and and there's a lot more in the world. Despite being text based, it has interesting characters, and Oblivion didn't have any of those other.

[QUOTE="dreDREb13"]I like Morrowind, but I got very annoyed at missing someone point blank with a knife, and as stupid as the voice acting was in Oblivion, it still immersed me pretty damn well. Okay, I suppose I should rephrase that: I don't like Morrowind very much. I'm not sure why. It's really hard for me to get into and things just start off way too slow. I'm sure I sound like a person that wants a dumbed down experience, but I really don't. I play D&D constantly and extensive and specific RPG's are my favorite games. Just something about Morrowind didn't click with me.

If you're used to D&D, then Morrowind's combat shouldn't bother you - it's not much different.

I didnt care for Morrowind - cuz I could never get into it. But when I played Oblivion I found myself...well...hating it. It was big, beautiful and something I had never seen but it was also bland. I couldnt find anything interesting in it and didnt really like being in its world. The exploring was a tab bit much and I didnt get much out of the quests. The story was also meh. Didnt find myself caring about anything except getting a cool new sword or a faster horse. The physics and such were good but I hated how you didnt really feel like you were hitting anything til the enemy died and when they did they would go completely limp and just either fly or fall when it was over. So...lame. Anyway. Thats it for me.

Bugs really weren't a problem on the PC...Kivan wrote three mods that eliminated > 10,000 bugs from the game and the DLCs.

Vanilla Oblivion is pretty lousy, but can be a lot of fun if you mod it. Daggerfall is still the best in the series followed by Morrowind.

TBH, swords were not as effective as they were in the stories, I remember seeing somewhere a flick of someone using a katana against a plate mail, and the Katana just couldn't cut through the armor. Still, once your skill in using whatever weapon you are using improves so to will your hit rate, and the misses will bother you a lot less.

Because it just wasnt not as good as Daggerfall, Arena or Morrowind in the Elderscrolls series.

The only thing Oblivion did better was graphics, everthing else was dumbed down when compared to Morrowind and Daggerfall.

Not a terrible game, but just not as good as the reviews said imo.

because people were expecting an RPG with action elements, not an action game with RPG elements.

I loved Oblivion personally, but I imagine if I had played previous installments I'd feel different. I guess people feel about Oblivion the way as I, a lover of Deus Ex 1, feel hate towards Deus Ex 2.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed certain parts of Oblivion such as the various quest lines available. However, I felt far less satisfied with the game in comparison to Morrowind. My expectations for the game after playing Morrowind did not quite match what I ended up getting.

The only thing oblivion did better was combat...otherwise morrowind was better in almost every other aspect...oh and graphics it obviously was better than morrowind too.

Not to mention 90% of Oblivion's mods are stupid sex mods.

I thought Arena was borderline bad and Daggerfall was too complicated and with a useless unexplained UI (kinda fun for its time though). Morrowind was a step in the right direction and Oblivion is even a step closer to perfecting the Elder Scrolls series even though it still had quite a few problems. This is all IMO of course.

The map was broken :( I had to turn the difficult right down to kill a goblin or whatever it was. The animations are poor and detract from the quality of the storytelling. It didn't really explain a lot of the mechanics very well like the charisma wheel and things like that. Too much walking around which was boring. I think the AI is also broken. I snuck into a house and lockpicked the door and then there's a guard right behind me. Guards also magically know when you've stolen stuff. It just lacked atmosphere. Also the beginning of the game is very poor. A slow dungeon crawl, followed by a search for a key in a tower.
