Alot obviously people still dont get it

There's nothing actually "wrong" with buying an Alienware, you just have to realize that you are spending extra money, just like when you a Ferrari, it still gets you from Point A to Point B like a normal car would, just with the extra price. What worries me is that they are now supposedly using cheaper parts, like mainboards and PSUs. If this is true then the extra price is not warranted.

Never said it was wrong just immoral.

But I don't think you get cheap and crappy parts in a Ferrari. Even if you're looking to blow $10k on a PC, getting an Alienware desktop is foolish.

Well, that's why I said the last line, what worries me is (according to some) that they are now using cheaper parts. Back 10 years ago, if you bought an Alienware, and spent the extra money, you were getting a very nicely built gaming PC with good quality parts, that's why the premium was there.

It's not that much more.

People that build their own have no warranty if they make a mistake,

they have to buy the OS which is a pretty good chunk of change,

and then there's the cost of the time to put it together - unless you think your time is worth nothing.

Not sure if ignant or troll, but anyway... As already stated, up to a 100% mark-up (that's "not that much more"?). Individual parts come with warranties, which are usually between 1 and 7 years. Windows only costs $100, much less if you get a student deal or something similar. Only takes a couple of hours to assemble a PC and get everything installed. If that's too much for you, PC shops usually charge ~$50 to assemble a PC.

Since Alienware was bought by Dell, I would say no, do not buy one. As seen by previous replies, sub-par parts being used is just part of it. Now, I can't complain about buying a boutique PC too much as I bought a Falcon-Northwest Mach V several years ago. Sure, I could have bought the parts to build a new PC, but one thing I cannot do like FN can do is the wiring. Their wiring jobs are out of this world. Also, their tech support outclasses everyone else's by miles. If I wanted to drop $10K on a PC, it would be on one made by them.

As mentioned above, stores can build it up for you for like 40-50 bucks, and they even have presets already made, and you don't pay for a brand..

If i had 10k bucks to spend, in the case i didn't feel like mounting it myself, i'd mail the site and they would make up the best pc for that budget, so you get top-end components and you only pay for the assembling of the parts. I'd spend like 2k max, i'd save the rest for a new guitar and other needs :D

For what you get they're overpriced. Always.

They might have some nice GPU and CPU but they usually have the bare minimum PSU which is not something you wanna skimp on. Bad PSU can cripple the entire setup. Not to mention they fit inside tiny cases which I wouldn't think is very goot for heat dispersion

seanmcloughlin

Have you ever had an alienware? Dell alienware psus are one of the best. made by pc power and cooling. I hate when people talk about something they know nothing about, yes they are overpriced, but it feels more complete than a custom built, top notch quality.

I would rather buy a new part than going through rma. Which takes up to two months or more when it works.

Wait, what? How is that even possible? they don't have special PC parts, they use normal parts. So if Alienware computers feel more complete than a custom built PC, you probably suck at building PCs.

While I am a proponent of people building their own desktop PCs (especially for gaming), and realize that Alienware earned their reputation as being overpriced, I'm not sure that this is necessarily the case anymore.  I remember the days when just having a grey alien head on the front of your case would cost you 4 or 5 grand.  While you can still buy an overpriced PC from Alienware, not all of their offerings are that way now.  I have attempted to match a couple of their entry to midrange gaming builds before, and either just barely beat it or couldn't do it for the price.  It's hit or miss these days.

What do you mean by "more complete?"  How do you quantify that?  It's a computer... a collection of parts put together.  There is nothing more "complete" about it.  I think you have been blinded by the Alienware mysticism.  I was hoping we were past this sort of thing in today's society.  Sadly, I appear to have been mistaken.

And yeah thats true. But again your holding it to standards of custom built laptops. For those who money is not important and just want to buy an already manufactured computer, it seems to me like alienware is alright.

Eh, I'm from the camp that if you're gonna get into PC gaming you'd better do it the right way. Alienware definitely serve a market for gamers who want PC gaming with none of the hassle of putting it together, but it's the putting it together that helps you understand your PC. Assembling all those parts and researching it at first takes a long time but you will be much better off because if something breaks you will know how to troubleshoot it better.

I don't hate Alienware, but I do hate the people who buy Alienware and act like hipsters for it. Alienware feels like a middle ground between Console gaming and fully fledged PC gaming

Well put.  That's the feeling that I was trying to verbalize.

Laptops are a different story.  It's pretty difficult to build your own laptop.  When it comes to desktops, they just aren't typically a good value.

Dont hate it. All branded pre-built PCs/Laptops have a hefty premium. - If there is anything I dont like, its how they carry their brand, then associate themselves all over PC gaming. It gives off an image that PC gaming not on Alienware is not as premium as it is.

As far as I know back in the day it was a solid product. But since Dell took it over the quality went down drastically. But don't have any first hand experience.

I wanted a gaming laptop for Christmas and was looking at ibuypower. My wife wanted to surprise me so she asked around and someone told her Alienware was the best.  I have a M14X and its the biggest piece of garbage I've ever owned.  I have had the computer less than a year and it has stopped showing the correct time after I turn it off and boot it back up.  After calling Dell Tech support (located in some Spanish speaking country) about a dozen times they sent a tech out to my house to replace the motherboard which didn't come with a CMOS battery.  The tech replaced my motherboard with a refurbished motherboard (and reused my original CMOS battery) and now I am starting to get errors saying that the oem adapter is not recognized and the battery is not charging.  Stay away from this garbage at all cost!

1. We hate how people with Alienwares think that they are special.

2. We hate to see people waste money.

3. We know that Alienwares usually have crappy motherboards and PSUs.

pawq4

Nailed it right there.

They're not "sometimes overpriced", they're  always  overpriced. And even more so than other prebuilt brands. There is literally no reason to ever even consider buying an alienware, unless you're just rolling in disposable income, don't care about being ripped off, and you think the alien head logo is the coolest thing you've ever seen in your life.

Also, necro thread. But I don't mind this one, since it's not  that  old, and the post that brought it back to life is from someone describing why Alienware sucks. Approved.

Are you kidding? Alienware deserves all the hate. It seems like they are being built by people who don't know a single thing about PC gaming. Did I mention they are overpriced? Go through companies like CyberpowerPC if you don't feel like building your own.

I always thought the cases looked really cool. If I was rich I would of probably got into them when I was younger. Can build my own pc and use a cooler looking case for much cheaper though.
