Im sick of having to write this in every thread which asks about a "gaming laptop". so i just leave this here in the hope people will see it before they post.

Why you dont want a "gaming laptop":

there is no such thing as a gaming laptop. gaming is about the experience. so;

a: you need to be able to concentrate on it.

b: you need a large screen

c: you need to be comfortable

d: you need good sound

e: you need good mouse and keyboard

f: you want something powerful as the more fluid a game can be the more enjoyment you will get

d: your system needs to be able to disperse heat, something all laptops have a problem with. especially after 6 months of dust

and if you dont care about all of that, and still think you will have a good gaming experience on a 15inch screen on a bus, please consider:

a:everything in your laptop has a lifespan of 2 years, after which your money is completely wasted. as you wont be able to upgrade sufficiently.

b: the case you pay for in a laptop gets thrown away

c: the keyboard gets thrown away

d: the touch pad gets thrown away

e: the motherboard gets thrown away

f: the power supply gets thrown away

g: the monitor gets thrown away

h: cpu thrown away

i: ram thrown away

j: hard drives, thrown away

k: cd/dvd drives thrown away

with a desktop, when things are a little out of date, you can keep almost all of these components and just buy a new motherboard, or cpu, or graphics card etc. making desktops better for the world and better for your pocket.

also consider

a: laptop is easy to steal

b: a gaming laptop will be targeted especially to steal

c: you will look like a nerdy rich kid

have i talked you out of it yet??

can someone STICKY THIS POST please?? because every day there is someone asking about a "gaming laptop", and another person crying that their new "gaming laptop" performs like crap, overheats, was a waste of money. it really annoys me and ever gamer/techie really knows that gaming laptops are overpriced peices of crap that no one should be looking at buying.

thanks

You guys really should stop telling people they shouldn't have laptops for gaming.

Some people have the disposible income. If they want a laptop for gaming let them have it. Stop being pricks.

This. You can tell them the disadvantages but you don't have to be a desktop snob. Please don't make "desktop snob" a thing.

How about you leave other people alone to buy what they want? Just because you're a smug moron who thinks having a desktop makes you far superior to everyone else, gives you no right to tell people they shouldn't buy a laptop. I own an Acer Aspire 6920G. It came out n 2008, has a dual core 2Ghz processor, 3GB RAM, 512mb ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 and Windows 7 64bit installed. I've got almost 80 games on Steam and about a dozen on disc. It's main use is of course for gaming. So don't tell people a laptop can't be for gaming as it's just nonsense to put it politely. People can buy what they want.

Half of the things you listed are wrong or just plain dumb. No scratch that, more than half. Pretty much everything is wrong. Stop crying about laptops, they're PCs and this is the PC hardware forum.

I think most of his points are invalid. My only concern ever is people buy a laptop for their primary gaming machine, the performance sucks, it is hot as hell and then they come to the internet wondering why it isn't awesome. And that is why I try to steer people away from gaming laptops, because most have unrealistic expectations.

Mostly I think it is because the laptop equivalents have names similar to their desktop counterparts but nowhere near the performance.

Id have to agree with Jiggly. Clevo's are the best laptops, even if you dont plan on gaming on them. I have the M570RU myself.

Yeah, I have my main gaming rig, but I'd like something like a mini laptop with a future AMD Trinity inside for very light gaming on source engine, UT3 engine, stuff. There are tons of games that don't require the beefy hardware. I recently got the opportunuty to play Mount & Blade Warband: Napolionic Wars (which is AWESOME!) and I think it'd run decent on mid to low grade hardware on medium settings.

Thank you?

Seriously?

His list sucks. You'd have to a mouth breathing 12 year old to think it's "cool" or accurate.

Allow me to tear it down point by point.

a: you need to be able to concentrate on it.

That's subjective. I, as well as anyone else, can concentrate as much as I (we) want to. This isn't Nazi gaming Germany. It's a ****ing past time, a hobby.

b: you need a large screen

That's subjective. No you don't. You can game on any size screen you want at any resolution the screen allows you to game at. Derp.

c: you need to be comfortable

What's with you and needs? Do you know what needs are? Hell, you don't even need gaming, it's just a really fun distraction from life. With that said, laying in bed with a laptop on my lap and a mouse to my side seems pretty damn comfortable to me. Sitting in a recliner with a laptop on my lap while I use my mouse on an end table seems pretty damn comfortable to me.

d: you need good sound

Again, subjective. Plenty of people use onboard sound even in their desktops. However, heres some mud in your eye, you can get a small usb DAC with headphone amp and a decent set of IEMs or headphones... Problem solved.

e: you need good mouse and keyboard

Considdering many people here use crappy keyboards with rubber dome switches on their desktop that's a moot point. Besides, laptops have USB ports and guess what can plug into a USB port? That's right a keyboard. Mice can also interface with USB incase you weren't aware.

f: you want something powerful as the more fluid a game can be the more enjoyment you will get

Or just scale back shadows, AA, textures, etc until it runs smoothly. Some people realize that a laptop is not a desktop so running a game on medium doesn't bother them.

d: your system needs to be able to disperse heat, something all laptops have a problem with. especially after 6 months of dust

Get a $10 chill pad.

and if you dont care about all of that...

Yeah, I really don't.

a:everything in your laptop has a lifespan of 2 years, after which your money is completely wasted. as you wont be able to upgrade sufficiently.

What a stupid statement, especially the 2 years part. I feel like I'm getting trolled hard.

b: the case you pay for in a laptop gets thrown away

c: the keyboard gets thrown away

d: the touch pad gets thrown away

e: the motherboard gets thrown away

f: the power supply gets thrown away

g: the monitor gets thrown away

h: cpu thrown away

with a desktop, when things are a little out of date, you can keep almost all of these components and just buy a new motherboard, or cpu, or graphics card etc. making desktops better for the world and better for your pocket.

So you're telling me that old desktop parts don't go to the landfill? That they get used forever and ever? What do you think has happened to the millions of CRT monitors (that contain toxic materials), the millions of old first generation LCDs, The millions of 3:4 ratio monitos? What happens to those VooDoo 2 GPUs, the 56k modems, and AGP mother boards? What happens to the single core Pentium processors, the Pentium 2s, the AMD thunberbirds? There are landfills ****ing filled with PCB and copper from scrapped desktop parts. Scrappers in poor countries that receive our garbage electronics scrap it for the raw materials.

also consider

a: laptop is easy to steal

Don't be stupid with your laptop. Problem solved.

b: a gaming laptop will be targeted especially to steal

Subjective. ANY laptop, especially an Apple laptop, is a prime target if you're an idiot and leave it unattended.

c: you will look like anerdy rich kid

I feel like I'm getting trolled hard.

b: the case you pay for in a laptop gets thrown away

c: the keyboard gets thrown away

d: the touch pad gets thrown away

e: the motherboard gets thrown away

f: the power supply gets thrown away

g: the monitor gets thrown away

h: cpu thrown away

i: ram thrown away

j: hard drives, thrown away

k: cd/dvd drives thrown away

with a desktop, when things are a little out of date, you can keep almost all of these components and just buy a new motherboard, or cpu, or graphics card etc. making desktops better for the world and better for your pocket.

Eh, you got the reasons why I don't buy a gaming laptop. If I were to buy a laptop the only reason would be because I need to use software like Word, Excel or enter the internet if I'm not in my house and if I were to play games on there it would be light games like visual novels or games from GoG.

think before you speak. there is nobody else on the whole internets who can play this way as well as i can. the only famous players who play this way, play mw3, because of cheap perks and 2x knife range, they also play on xbox in 6v6 games vs kids who dont possess a mouse. you will find no one else playing cod4 on pc on big servers like that.

Tequilasunriser already dealt adequately with this thread. There are plenty of good gaming laptops out there that can hang with gaming desktops. More importantly, different people have different needs and different budgets. Some people need a laptop for one reason or another and don't want to buy a separate desktop for one reason or another, and they need to make do with their choices. Not all games out there require high-end performance components, either (most of which have mobile counterparts, anyways), and can be played by many varieties of laptops. I've got a higher-end Asus laptop which I play games on comfortably. This infantile attitude from some folks who parrot this line of "you can't game on a laptop" just reveal their ignorance and (misplaced) pretentiousness. I'm quite certain I've been gaming for many more years than the average GameSpot forum participant, and people like myself don't need kids telling us how to game. It's the same attitude from some PC gamers towards console gamers. It's just stupid, people will game differently depending on their needs.

I don't really care to know any of your personal details, but tequilasunriser already wrecked you. Different people have different needs. You also seem to be oblivious of the existence of higher-end laptops that deliver serious performance hardware. This attitude of laptop gaming being inferior to desktops isn't just pretentious and infantile, it's stupid and wrong. I actually think tequilasunriser went easy on you. There's nothing more amateur than arbitrarily defining what constitutes a "real gamer" with respect to his or her hardware. It makes you sound like a kid who just started playing video games a few years ago and whose earliest video game memory is an Xbox title.

I think a sweet spot would be an i5 CPU and at least a 7690 GPU for around 700 bucks for some gaming on a laptop. (not alienwares or the Asus GXX unless you get them at great deals).

Invest the extra cash (if any) to a desktop system.. if also can fit into your room.

I know people who are plenty satisfied in their dorms playing TF2, SC2, Skyrim and specially LoL with specs lower than those. AFAIK those are still gamers.. enjoying games w/o those high end, above $ 1000 lappies.

Really, depends on the deal.. I don't suggest buying anything near MSRP.

I find post like these rather poor because in the end they're various benefits and disadvantages to mobile gaming and the point of view brought here is very narrow and one sided. Needless to say, they're many things to take into account.

I am getting a gaming laptop and i dont care what ANYONE says including you. i am getting mine with the new ivy bridge CPU ati 7970M Oh BTW did you know that 7970M performs just as good as a desktop GTX 580M?

Un like some people i dont like to sit at home all day and play games. i like to go out. if i have some time when im out and not doing anything i can just play BF3 WITH max settings and AA on my laptop. guess what. i dont care that i could get he performance of a $800 dollar PC. oh sorry are your feelings hurt. Laptops are good for gaming and that whole over heating thing is BS anyways and you know it.

Just because you had a bad expererience with your laptop dose not mean you should go on to forums and spew nonsense.

Half of what i wrote in my post should have gone into a blog but YOU Tc needed to see it. Anyone who is willing to spend the money on a gaming laptop SHOULD do so and not let other people dictate what you should and should not buy.

Yeah it is your money, but a desktop will always be cheaper and better.

He laid out the facts just fine.

Also the overheating thing is not BS. All laptops get hot, some brands worse than others. I had one laptop I tried installing big software or if I had to reformat, it would shut off. So I had to prop it up on bowls to get air flow going and it would be just fine.

Im sick of having to write this in every thread which asks about a "gaming laptop". so i just leave this here in the hope people will see it before they post.

Why you dont want a "gaming laptop":

there is no such thing as a gaming laptop. gaming is about the experience. so;

a: you need to be able to concentrate on it.

Why can't you on a laptop?

b: you need a large screen

Why?

c: you need to be comfortable

If you get too comfortable your skills get sloppy. You don't reallyNEED to be comfortable.

d: you need good sound

....hahahahahhaahahahahahahhahahahahazhhaha. Intergrated sound card and $5 earbuds still will give you an edge in CSS. No need for quality.

e: you need good mouse andkeyboard

BS. Look at videos of Korean Starcraft Champions, they use cheapo logitec stock kb/m.

f: you want something powerful as the more fluid a game can be the more enjoyment you will get

Just play on low....

d: your system needs to be able to disperse heat, something all laptops have a problem with. especially after 6 months of dust

Not all laptops. Clean your dust out every 3 months and you won't need to deal with it.

and if you dont care about all of that, and still think you will have a good gaming experience on a 15inch screen on a bus, please consider:

I wouldn't play on a freaking bus. Why would anyone play on a bus?

a:everything in your laptop has a lifespan of 2 years, after which your money is completely wasted. as you wont be able to upgrade sufficiently.

Hahahahaha. I'm using an HP(that's right HP) laptop that is 3 years old right now.

b: the case you pay for in a laptop gets thrown away

Sell it on Ebay.

c: the keyboard gets thrown away

Sell it on Ebay

d: the touch pad gets thrown away

If I've been using the same touchpad for 2 years I wouldn't want to use it again anyways.

e: the motherboard gets thrown away

Or you can save it. And sell it on Ebay

f: the power supply gets thrown away

Sell it on Ebay

g: the monitor gets thrown away

Yes. That is true.

h: cpu thrown away

Keep it with the motherboard. Sell it on Ebay.

i: ram thrown away

Wow, you can sell this on Ebay too.

j: hard drives, thrown away

Or you can buy an adapter for 50 cents and move all your files onto an external drive. Just a thought.

k: cd/dvd drives thrown away

Yes.

with a desktop, when things are a little out of date, you can keep almost all of these components and just buy a new motherboard, or cpu, or graphics card etc. making desktops better for the world and better for your pocket.

If I had a build from 2007 the only things I would keep would be that Hard Drive and the Case. That is all.

also consider

a: laptop is easy to steal

Maybe true.

b: a gaming laptop will be targeted especially to steal

Then don't buy a f***ing Alienware with 40 gazillion LEDs.

c: you will look like a nerdy rich kid

If you have a gaming laptop you are a nerdy rich kid. And you don't care what other people think.

have i talked you out of it yet??

Not really.

can someone STICKY THIS POST please?? because every day there is someone asking about a "gaming laptop", and another person crying that their new "gaming laptop" performs like crap, overheats, was a waste of money. it really annoys me and ever gamer/techie really knows that gaming laptops are overpriced peices of crap that no one should be looking at buying.

Just ignore them. They didn't do their research and they are paying for it, leave them alone.

EDIT: Only read the first page, didn't see there was already one.

LOL wow this should have gone in your blog really.

JigglyWiggly_

Yeah it is your money, but a desktop will always be cheaper and better.

He laid out the facts just fine.

Also the overheating thing is not BS. All laptops get hot, some brands worse than others. I had one laptop I tried installing big software or if I had to reformat, it would shut off. So I had to prop it up on bowls to get air flow going and it would be just fine.

That's called a garbage laptop and not doing research My np8130/p151hm1 never gets very hot even under prime95 + furmark

No it wasn't very good at all, I sold it for $100 not long ago.

Regardless he said overheating is BS. It's not. All laptops get hot and if your heavily gaming (lol) they will get hot.

Clevo's rarely get "hot". Last time mine got hot was cause the heatsink was filled with dust. simple fix, cool as again.

agreed, gaming laptops are rip offs when you can get much more in a self built Pc for the same price.

You guys really should stop telling people they shouldn't have laptops for gaming.

Some people have the disposible income. If they want a laptop for gaming let them have it. Stop being pricks.

GummiRaccoon

I think most of his points are invalid. My only concern ever is people buy a laptop for their primary gaming machine, the performance sucks, it is hot as hell and then they come to the internet wondering why it isn't awesome. And that is why I try to steer people away from gaming laptops, because most have unrealistic expectations.

Mostly I think it is because the laptop equivalents have names similar to their desktop counterparts but nowhere near the performance.

This. I learned that the laptop version of the 6990 is just the desktop version of the 6870 with lower clocks. If your going to spend tons of money on an uber powerful laptop that uses so much energy to run that it has to stay plugged in to the wall, you might as well get a desktop. Unless you like not having to lug around a desktop PC if you travel alot.

I wouldn't tell a person with that kind of throw away money not to buy gaming laptops. Only people like me who make very little.

ok dude lets humour you and your offensive attitude.

It's a ****ing past time, a hobby.

you dont need a "gaming" machine to play freecell on a train. if people come looking for "gaming" equipment, you can assume, rightly, that they are looking for something that can do more than an average tablet pc. if they are looking for a "hobby" machine, to play games that dont require much attention, then they are NOT looking for a "gaming" machine.

b: you need a large screen

That's subjective. No you don't. You can game on any size screen you want at any resolution the screen allows you to game at. Derp

again, you are confusing HOBBYING with GAMING. a HOBBYIST has no problem playing on a small screen at 1024/768. a GAMER who comes here asking for information to improve his GAMING experience, does.

c: you need to be comfortable

What's with you and needs? Do you know what needs are? Hell, you don't even need gaming, it's just a really fun distraction from life. With that said, laying in bed with a laptop on my lap and a mouse to my side seems pretty damn comfortable to me. Sitting in a recliner with a laptop on my lap while I use my mouse on an end table seems pretty damn comfortable to me.

once again, difference between GAMING and HOBBYING. a GAMER sits for hours in one place playing a game. a HOBBYIST plays games in waiting rooms, on trains and buses. if they want to improve their GAMING experience, they need to be comfortable.

d: you need good sound

Again, subjective. Plenty of people use onboard sound even in their desktops. However, heres some mud in your eye, you can get a small usb DAC with headphone amp and a decent set of IEMs or headphones... Problem solved.

not subjective at all. better sound = a better experience. do you go to a cinema and be content with a ghetto blaster sitting in the corner?? no, so again, when people come asking how to have a good gaming experience, i tell them that sound is important, because it is.

e: you need good mouse and keyboard

Considdering many people here use crappy keyboards with rubber dome switches on their desktop that's a moot point. Besides, laptops have USB ports and guess what can plug into a USB port? That's right a keyboard. Mice can also interface with USB incase you weren't aware.

its not a moot point because people looking for a gaming laptop dont want to have a crappy keyboard, uncomfortable mouse. they want a good experience. they dont want their hardware or peripherals holding them back from being able to compete fairly in any given game. this is the least they expect from something tagged "GAMING", but they do not get this with "gaming" laptops.

f: you want something powerful as the more fluid a game can be the more enjoyment you will get

Or just scale back shadows, AA, textures, etc until it runs smoothly. Some people realize that a laptop is not a desktop so running a game on medium doesn't bother them.

yet again, people come asking for a GAMING machine they want to play at a high fps, smoothly. else they would have asked for a good HOBBY machine.

d: your system needs to be able to disperse heat, something all laptops have a problem with. especially after 6 months of dust

Get a $10 chill pad.

even more money and not a viable solution.

and if you dont care about all of that...

Yeah, I really don't.

because you are a snidey little low life.

a:everything in your laptop has a lifespan of 2 years, after which your money is completely wasted. as you wont be able to upgrade sufficiently.

What a stupid statement, especially the 2 years part. I feel like I'm getting trolled hard.

are you telling me a 2 year old laptop will be able to play a brand new high spec pc game? they wont, atleast not well.

b: the case you pay for in a laptop gets thrown away

c: the keyboard gets thrown away

d: the touch pad gets thrown away

e: the motherboard gets thrown away

f: the power supply gets thrown away

g: the monitor gets thrown away

h: cpu thrown away

i: ram thrown away

j: hard drives, thrown away

k: cd/dvd drives thrown away

with a desktop, when things are a little out of date, you can keep almost all of these components and just buy a new motherboard, or cpu, or graphics card etc. making desktops better for the world and better for your pocket.

Scrappers in poor countries that receive our garbage electronics scrap it for the raw materials.

can someone help him?? can someone really miss the point by so far??

sure everything goes in the skip IN THE END. but when a latop is out of date, the WHOLE PACKAGE must get thrown away. with a dekstop, you KEEP your mouse, keyboard, monitor, case, drives, ETC ETC ETC. i cant believe i just had to explain that again.

also consider

a: laptop is easy to steal

Don't be stupid with your laptop. Problem solved.

but you obviously are stupid, so we cant count on that.

b: a gaming laptop will be targeted especially to steal

Subjective. ANY laptop, especially an Apple laptop, is a prime target if you're an idiot and leave it unattended.

IRRELEVANT. you are trying to be pedantic but it just comes out as dumb. put a gaming laptop with bells and whistles next to a "normal" laptop and introduce a theif to the equation and see which one dissapears first. you are just arguing because you dont like me because ive offended you, probably because you spend all your money on a "gaming" laptop. it is transparent and boring.

c: you will look like anerdy rich kid

143.gif

have i talked you out of it yet??

seercirca is a known poser and a troll. against a real player i doubt he would last 5 minutes. he claims to be a pro gamer and when you look him up on xfire he has barely 300 hours into CoD4 as his most played game XD i have nearly 100 hours more and im probably still a downright noob compared to alot of ppl

JigglyWiggly_

against a real player i would not last 5 minutes? dude, i come to cod 4 server vs 50 people, play 3 or 4 games using 0 bullets and 0 frags, win every game and leave. dont believe me? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTN6ohpDoIs - and i think that video is 5 straight games, not 3 or 4.

i did that like 2 years ago, and its not even a "highlight", it is just what happens every game, but if i were to play now it would be even better than that.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZ0bIfizHCY

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NxQIS9Epxbk

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_qDJJ0gktU

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k99T653bnSw

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=etdEaQQ13Fs

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AOQq6KSpHMw

xfire says 300 hours because i havnt logged into it for over 2 years.

and if you wanna try and say the way i play is unskillfull, i was getting scores like 130-15 before even starting to play this way, you need to be that good to even bother trying to play like i do.

think before you speak. there is nobody else on the whole internets who can play this way as well as i can. the only famous players who play this way, play mw3, because of cheap perks and 2x knife range, they also play on xbox in 6v6 games vs kids who dont possess a mouse. you will find no one else playing cod4 on pc on big servers like that.

cod4

lol against TOTALLY GUD PPL

KDR means nothing btw, it's all about how ur playing and who ur playing against

also i play most mp fps at 1024x768 except for games like CSS, so laptop gaeming is fine

i'm up for random challenges, i can play cod4 1v1

ahahah. sure, big boy. on one condition. the only point of a laptop is so you can take it away from your desk and use it in your bed, or on a train, and so on. so for you to adequately defend "gaming" laptops, you need to be playing me on a bus, train, or in your bed. because otherwise you may aswel be using a proper computer ie a desktop.

you, using your laptop, on a bus, or on your bed, vs me, with my GAMING PC. sitting at a desk with surround sound, LOOOADSSA space to spin my mouse, a perfectly flat black quality mouse mat which will never skip (unlike a fking duvet), and a nice big monitor. ok?

you really think you have a chance?

I've gamed on a laptop for years. Have an Asus G73 that plays almost anything maxed and have been playing Diablo 3 on my MacBook pro. Allicrombie
Same here :) My first gaming laptop was an IBM Thinkpad with a 486dx2 that I used for Doom 2 and Duke Nukem 3D in class while I was supposed to be doing my schoolwork, lol...
