Soon i will make the upgrade from XP to Windows 7. I will have to buy new memory from 2GB to 4GB.

I have a Quad Core 6600 non oc 2,4GHz, 2GB ram DDR2 667mhz, 8800GTS 512MB. All on a Asus P5B Motherboard.

I'm thinking of replacing my memory completely and just go for DDR2 1066 4GB in total. I'm not sure if it will work, and if its even necessary?

Help me out here :)

The Asus P5B is (or was) advertised as a strictly 800MHz RAM board, but it has a BIOS setting for 1066MHz that allows you to use PC2-8500 RAM...

In order to gain anything at all from such an upgrade you would have to overclock the fsb. With your current 266 MHz fsb the link between the processor and memory controller is operating at PC4200 speed. While there is a small advantage to running memory faster than the link speed it does not scale.

If you are not going to mess with overclocking your CPU just stick to your PC5300 memory, faster than that does almost nothing.

If you however want to push your system you could go for some PC6400 CL5, that seems to cost only a fraction more than the cheapest DDR2 memory. Though you can still overclock your CPU with PC5300 memory if you fancy.
