I only have a 10/100mbps router (even though i have a gigabit motherboard) so i guess two questions firstly the most important one if i buy ANY 10/100 mbps 5 port ethernet switch will they work the same and will it lower my download speeds?

Secondly would it be beneficial for me to upgrade to a gigabit router since I have a gigabit motherboard.

1- A switch doesn't affect speed.

2- You mean integrated gigabit adapter on your motherboard. Depends on the download speed you get from your ISP.
