Its funny because here in the UK it costs £30 for Civ 5 on Steam and £25 online via Amazon.
As the game is for my wife (I have never played Civ before) I decided to get the Amazon copy, pay £2 for 1st class postage and then paid £3 extra to have it gift wrapped with a little note on it....So in the end it cost the same amount as the Steam version but now its a LOT more special.
Yes, they apparently bought into Valve's nonsense that Steam somehow prevents piracy. I guess it does for the four pirates that can figure out how to illegally download and install games but not the Steam client replacement.

It couldn't possibly be that Firaxis wants to use Steamworks - a very handy FREE set of tools that lots of developers have nothing but praise for, right?

Yeah, I'm sure that was why a bunch of companies use GFWL too. It does provide for convenient marketing spin for them to be able to say they are using it for Steamcloud and such, I'll give them that. Yes, let's just let Valve have their hands in the entire PC game market. After all, Valve is the Jesus Christ of game companies. All of these years of the PC being an open platform have sucked.

A bunch of companies use Games for Windows Live? That's news to me.
Steam has nothing to do with PC being an open platform. No one is twisting anyone's arm here.
