People associate playing MMO's =nerd.
Would this apply?
This topic is locked from further discussion.
You're posting on a internet forum devoted to video games. I think you're a little late worry about nerdiness.
Will I be considered a nerd I'm I start playing MMO's?reachrocksmanLet's turn that around. Do you think people who play MMOS are nerds? If you do, do you think that's a bad thing? Why do you care what others think anyway?
Aren't we all nerds?
We all play video games and we all post messages on a gaming site, don't we?
Besides, what's wrong with being a nerd?
Nerd is an old term, I don't think it applies anymore except to those hardcore people who dress up as elves and attend midnight launches of WoW. Now gaming is very mainstream (specially with Wii, Kinect etc), even big stars do ads on TV playing games...Aren't we all nerds?

I do see what you're getting at. I agree with you, it's a lot more mainstream now than it used to be. In my opinion though, I see video games as a "nerdy" hobby if you will, as it is still not really as "acceptable" in modern society. Many people associate video games as "uncool" as it is not as much of a sociable hobby as say, getting together with your buddies and watching a football game. Of course there's nothing wrong with that, I'm not saying you're "uncool" for liking video games. I'm just saying that is the opinion of modern society as a whole.
For example. A 20 year old college guy sits at home on a Saturday night with his Xbox and does another run of Mass Effect 2. In society's eyes, he should be out at a club with his friends partying and getting drunk. It's what's considered "cool". A 15 year old kid(like me) would rather sit down at his computer and play some Dead Space or Bad Company 2. In society's eyes, I should be out playing sports or hanging out with my friends. It's what's considered "cool".
In my opinion, that's all what it really boils down to.
I understand you might have a different opinion than I do on things. That's fine. And I apologize in advance for the little mini-novel I wrote.
I think more than anything what this guy needs is to not worry about what people think of him for playing MMOs or any video games at all. At the end of the day, video games are just hobbies, nothing more. It's no different than being a football fan or a car/vehicle enthusiast. If it's what you enjoy doing, then by all means do it.

Oh I agree with your post totally...I'm just saying the term is a LOT more mainstream now. Even kids these days go out and stuff, but also stay home, drink beer and play FIFA against each other on a couch.... and it's not considered "uncool". Even "fashion" girls now (which before would NEVER date a nerd), are playing The Sims and dating nerds. You say it's a "nerdy" hobby, but even parents these days prefer their children to say home, instead of going out and getting drunk/getting into fights.... About 10 years ago, did ever you imagine a big football/cricket/tennis star, or TV celebrity doing a computer game ad?[QUOTE="marcogamer07"][QUOTE="FelipeInside"] Nerd is an old term, I don't think it applies anymore except to those hardcore people who dress up as elves and attend midnight launches of WoW. Hell, it was like that 5 years ago.
It's a lot more mainstream now, I'll give you that. What I'm trying to say though is that it's not quite there yet.
It's not as "acceptable" in modern society as music, movies and television are.
And judging from my own experience. If "fashion girls" are dating nerds now like you say, then all I can say is...where do you live? I'm moving there right away. lol :P
Where I'm from, everyone is either an athlete or a drug addict. A girl would never be caught dead with someone like me.

You need to move....lol....It's not that bad where I live in terms of conditions, it's just that the kids my age are all jackasses. Well, most of them. I don't really get along with any people my age other than a select few people. So I really don't socialize much.
Then again, I really don't like socializing and prefer to keep to myself most of the time. I don't really like people in general. Mainly because of past experiences that I don't really want to get into on here.

Not everyone who plays is a nerd, or posts on these forums. Granted I did feel nerdier when I played WOW because I talked about it at work with people who played. People in my everyday life dont know I am into video games as much as I am, and no one knows I post here lol, but they are both considered nerdy by the general public I think. In the end it dosent matter, do what makes you happy, my advice on mmos is that if you already have a life you dont need them, if you have no GF friends etc they are great.

and that if I have a life or GF or friends then I can't play an MMO...?

Do what you want, that was from my experiance. Raiding took way to much time, I have a full time job and a GF that wants to do stuff everyday. It didnt fit, everyones situtation is different so dont take it personial.A lot of people I knew on WOW were adults with girlfriends/boyfriends, or husbands/wives... and some of them even had kids. Their girlfriends would play with them in the same guild, etc. You could have a life and play WOW too. Even more so these days because WOW is more newb friendly. And i'm not saying that's a bad thing either. WOW is lots of fun and even though I am not playing it any more, I would recommend it to someone who wants an MMO experience that is full of quality.Elann2008Yeah exactly... You can play WoW hardcore mode = less time with friends, GF etc You can play WoW more casually = more time with friends, GF etc

But it isn't necessary to raid every night. There are many guilds that have people who are married, or married with kids, or in some sort of relationship.. with commitments. Guilds that I have been in, have about 2-3 raiding nights and the rest are free time to do whatever you want. You're not restricted to "WOW is your life." That's untrue. I'm not taking it personal hehe. Just sayin'! :D[QUOTE="reachrocksman"]

so sick of people applying labels and such to each other ...... play the games or don't play the games ...... people who hate on video games probably spend way too much money on their cable and watch crappy tv shows
Agreed with this guy.
