I keep reading a lot of hate about it I'm not sure excatly whats wrong with it but from what I gather people dont like that its basically been made for touch screen other than that though what harm does it do to gaming?

Just trying to work out if its going to be worth the upgrade or not.

it doesn't do anything for gaming actually, the performance is actually almost the same as much as they throw the "better memory management" left and right, you get a fugly interfase and a lo of useless things you don't need that will get fixed in the next windows so they can keep on selling windows versions.

Probably not. I am more familar with a Win7 (normal) UI and am stubborn to change, especially if the change comes in the form of "ease of use" and Metro.

Don't have plans for it. Unless it brings something interesting to the table I'll stick with Win7.

Gonna try it on my laptop with Start8 to see how well I like it. If I end up liking it a lot, I might put it on my desktop.

I'll probably be getting the SURFACE, cause sometimes my desktop is off and I want to write on these forums on the couch while watching TV. I use my phone but it's too small. Saying that, does ANYONE know if the Windows RT Version will have ADOBE FLASH working on Internet Explorer?

I'm currently working under the theory that Microsoft has two OS development teams that alternate releases; the team that creates the garbage like Vista/ME and the team that creates halfway decent OS like XP/7.

It's not that, it's that both ME and Vista tried new technologies and therefore they got it wrong in some parts. The OS after it fixed those issues and improved on that new technology.

I love 7 and see no point in moving up to 8. I may have if I was still using XP or maybe even Vista. But 7 is awesome.

Which pretty much means that there is no reason to buy windows 8...just wait for the following relase which might actually be worth the effort?

Not necessarily since lots of people have tested Windows 8 and say it's great (Metro Menu, you either like it or don't). With Vista, people were already pointing out the problems in Beta and Consumer Previews.

I actually just tried start8. Oh yeah the start menu is much better. You can always still go to metro if you want, but now all the benefits of 8 with the start menu. It's better. Paid for it too. You can get 10% off just liking it on facebook. Installed on 3 machines so far, 4.50$ total, well worth it

Yeah, out of all the programs that put the Start Menu back in, the Stardock version is one of the best. Jiggs, do the Live Corners still work with Start8 installed? As in can you still go to the side and bring up Charms etc. I would put Win8 on my desktop, but I would really miss Aero. I know it's just aesthetics but I love the transparency effect. People are super worried about Win8, I'm more worried about Office 2013, the consumer preview I tried had some serious issues, and it was mostly cloud based. A b**** to uninstall too.

Yeah, the charm stuff still works. Office 2013 I don't know what to expect. I do like cloud synch stuff, but I don't have a problem with office related stuff since I just save files in my dropbox folder. Skydrive is fine too I guess. Though what makes Dropbox still #1 is the ability to use direct urls for public folders. So you can hotlink images in forums and stuff.

Dropbox started off as great, now it's complete s**** cause of one main problem: their upload rate is atrocious.

I think SkyDrive has a public mode but don't know about Direct URL (I guess it would).

I tried it out in Bestbuy and i was shocked. It certainly wasn't as bad as everyone is saying it is and i really don't understand the hate for it. One click and you go right back into the start menu you're used to and the square boxes weren't so bad. But i'll probably not be getting it i have windows7 and i'm not spending upgrade money for something that doesn't add anything important that i need.

I think SkyDrive has a public mode but don't know about Direct URL (I guess it would).

Their speeds are okay, but yeah they aren't too fast.

I can only upload at around 1.2 MB/s. Also tested at university internet.

I can upload at 2.5 MB/s on my Comcast connection and university is capped due to the switches at 1 gb/s.

Downloads aren't too fast either, caps out at 5 MB/s when I can do 13-14 MB/s

Skydrive and google drive both do not have direct url linking. Dropbox also lets you abuse it for sv_downloadurl if you are hosting a game server.

Spideroak actually lets you have more control over your public folder than any of the cloud storage solutions.

Except it mandates public urls with https... so that breaks pretty much everything. Dropbox allows for https and http

And it actually follows a folder structure.

Another benefit of dropbox is that it's available on like every platform.

Skydrive is a pita for linux.

^^ Thing is that when Dropbox started, the upload and download rates were maxed.

I remember testing it. Now it's all capped. You ring them up and they complain it's your internet, or router, or packet size, or whatever BS they can come up with.

I just think they are cutting costs by not upgrading (and capping) their servers.

That and then the articles that their passwords were hacked TWICE....I know I won't be using them. SugarSync is heaps better. (or Crashplan for cloud backup)

They never had their passwords taken, and they are undoubtedly encrypted. About crashplan, yeah it's great. I have like 1-2 terabytes uploaded. Almost all of it junk, but it's nice nonethless. It isn't a replacement for Dropbox/skydrive/spideroak though. I use dropbox, spideroak, skydrive, and crashplan. Can't have too much cloud

Is there a reason "not to get it" ???

???

That's how you buy things.?

Here's how I buy things - I ask questions like, "What makes Windows 8 better than what I have now?"

If the answer is "nothing", I keep my money.

I'm saying I like it but I don't want to screw up the normal stuff I do like game so is windows 8 bad for pc gaming? as that as I said would make me not get it.

I don't see a reason to get it yet because I haven't seen any tangible benefits over upgrading from Win7. Maybe I will get the OS that comes after Win8.

I will be getting it since I need a new gaming lap top next year and whatever site I buy it from will probably put W8 on it since it will be the current OS. I'm not to happy about changing the desin but I have not used it yet so I really can't say much. If the W8 tablet has the apps I need I will probably get a W8 tablet first and I can base my descession on that.

I keep reading a lot of hate about it I'm not sure excatly whats wrong with it but from what I gather people dont like that its basically been made for touch screen other than that though what harm does it do to gaming?

Just trying to work out if its going to be worth the upgrade or not.

scotty992

I have only used it briefly but I didn't care for it much. As mre of my customers at work get it and I sue it more I will make a decision then. I won't be getting it at launch for sure. For the average gamer it offers nothing that Windows 7 doesn't have except the app store and that is a bad thing not a selling feature.

Yeah it offers even better performance and stability, what actually matters for games (I'm tired of seeing you people discuss what an OS needs to offer gaming to in the end just ignore what it needs saying that it doesn't have God knows what redundant features that have nothing to do with games).

I am not sure about Windows 8. I must say that I am pretty happy with Windows 7 therefore I dont see a reason yet to to change it. Also Windows 8 was supposed to be for Touch-Screens, and I am not sure if I like the new look of it.

A desktop OS made with a non optional user interface optimised for touch. No thanks.

Windows is getting worse for each version...

If not for games I would switch to Linux in a heartbeat.

Will never buy Windows 8, the reason being that thing known as "METRO".
