with all these sophisticated and powerful gaming consoles being unveiled, will PC gaming becomea thing of the past?
While I'm just a casual gamer and still prefer to play on my PC, I think there might come a point when I'm better off gaming on consoles rather than my PC. Right now, to keep up with and get the most out of today's power-hungry PC games, I have to upgrade to a faster processor, get a much more powerful video card, and add RAM to my PC. With all these new upgrades, wouldn't it be much more cost effective to buy a gaming console, let it do its thing, and not bother upgrading my PC?
THERE HAS TO BE A WAY OUT FOR THE PC GAMERS.....UNLESS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Those powerful consoles are every generation more like PCs. You can even install Linux on PS3.

count me in - anyway no it's not better to get a console - i've already saw DiRT gameplay video on X360 - it's blur is old version unlike the PC version which have latest blur (3 if i remember right) as a final conclusion Xbox won't allow to lower the fps in their games so they'll reduce the graphics - already seen it in DiRT - believe me it'll continue to other games very soon, here we go again consoles graphics again start to get old in their games compare to PC - it's kinda circle of gaming lol

i prefer consoles right now, since i dont have money to keep up with the new pc games that need all this ram and whatnot, but if i had the choice i would definatly go for a pc. i mean besides the fact of upgrades, itll still be around for a loooooong time

Only way I would become a console gamer is if they make mouse/keyboard option standard for most games and ban all the 14-year-olds.

Far superior? no... better? yes.

Xenos in the 360 is pretty powerful still and capable for another year or so for nice graphics, of course.. in the pc market Nvidia owns ATI at the moment :)

1x 8800GTX = FAR superior. The xenos can't even do directx 10.

It's like comparing the xbox1 geforce 3 with the radeon 9800XT, a card generations ahead.

Thats more of a hassle. It's more simple and easier for a console.

"with all these sophisticated and powerful gaming consoles being unveiled"

Every new generation of consoles sees new and powerful consoles being released, so you could have started this when the Xbox and PS2 where early on the scene. It just seems like a larger leep this time around because of HD televisions and so on. And you'll probably find that PC's are always leading the way in the technology.

Most tvs come with vga and dvi connectors, it's not a hassle at all, and frankly, it would be easier playing with a stick and a few pebbles outside than bothering to purchase, unpack and connect up a console.

This is nothing new. The same "Is PC gaming on the decline?"came up with the release of the xbox, the ps2, dreamcast, n64.... The consoles of today are fantastic to be sure, but at the end of the day, the PC will always have the advantage as to how far a developer can push the envelope.

8800 GTX is better yes, but not vastly superior. For instance, 8800 GTX still can struggle on games like CS source, i should know because the FPS can still dip below 50 on some maps, and that game is almost 3 years old!.

Sure the Xenos doesntsupport DX10, but even though the 8800 GTX can its not going to be the best for dx10 come the end of this year. I bet the 8800's will struggle in Crysis for minimum FPS.

Those dips in fps are due to software isues such as drivers, programmer code and more commonly other things such as harddrive access times, ram speed, cpu bottlenecks etc.

Either way the 8900 is coming out soon. :P

8900? if it is i wont be getting it, G90 is due out before the end of the year and supposeduly 2x as powerful as the 8800 gtx, no idea if thats true though we will have to wait and see. I'll buy the card first and then sell my 8800, should only pay maybe £100 more for the new card that way.

Another Monday, another pc gaming is dying thread. Seriously, everytime a new generation of consoles are released for some reason people run around screaming the sky is falling. Everytime I think of getting one of the new consoles I look at my XBox, PS2 and Gamecubes sitting there gathering dust like they have been for about 3 years. I've spent more time playing pc games in the last week then I have playing console games in the last year. Mostly because aside from the graphics, all it seems that console developers are doing is redoing the same games over and over. Not that the pc developers don't, I'm not the only person who thinks that EA just keeps rereleasing BF1942 with better graphics and a new title every couple of years. Still, pc gaming is never going away as long as there are pcs.

I will give it to the console makers this timethough, the graphics chip in the 360 was very good when it first came out, it took like a year for PC to surpass it by a good margin. However, the pc always overtakes consoles in so many months to no more than a year graphics and CPU wise.

What the hell are you on about? CS:S on my PC has never dipper below 120fps. And even an FPS of 50 is still good, I mean when was the last time a 360 had a stable 50fps from start to finish?

Will consoles take over pc gaming? phuh...U have got to be kidding...NEVER! As mentioned in previous posts pc's are customizable and with some free cash you can own a gaming pc far superior then some senseless console that has no practical usage except replacing your dvd player.

PC's are practical tools, they allow you to play games, build software, web, do photo art, create 3d animations and so on...can a console do that? I think not... so spending 500$ extra that the ps3 costs to get a respectable pc is far more practical and useful.

And as for friends coming over...then the friend brings his pc along or plays on your second pc or laptop...

PC games 4 ever

Exactly, Pc gaming is forever upgrading whilst the consoles get produced and stay that way until the next one comes out 3 years latr....in that time PC gamers have already had another 5 high end Gpx cards arrive. So like ^ he said, your "takeover" theory is illogical. Pc gaming in terms of graphics can outdo the best of a console, anyone who knows anything will tell yu that, so i dont think we should dignify the tcwith a response tbh :)

I was trying to search for the article but it was several months ago and i can't remeber where i saw it. However, it was about crysis and how it just couldn't be possible to run it on the 360 or any consoles because the tech level is to outdated according to the 360 lead desinger he then stated thatpcs will always be superior because of the ever changing tech he even said that consoles are created with the best tech at that time of the release(whichhas been availablefor the pc)and in a sense as soon as the new tech for the comps come out consoles are then technologically outdated. It's pcs that ad further tech to the gaming marketplace, so theres always gonna be a need for pcs to develop the tech to run games and then develop that tech for the consoles to use. Lets face it the 360 has what a gig of the ati 1800 series gpu and the ps3 1 gig of the nvidia 7800 gtx series thats 1+ years of outdated tech in these so called "next gen consoles" IMO the only next gen is and always has been the pc.

this is retarded. pc gaming will never become a thing of the past due to the fact that the whole world's industries use PCs and MACs for work related things. whether it be word processing or designing the new wave of movie cgi. it just won't happen on an xbox 3000 or a ps3 6404590. devs won't be lining up in front of best buys or circuit cities waiting for their xboxs and ps3s or whatevs that come out. the pc still stands as the superior gaming and work platform just because it is. it can do far more, last more, and face it: you can spend an almost equal amount of cash on a ps3 (JUST the ps3), or get a new video card (like the 8800gtx). now, buying a video card will upgrade your pc and extend your pcs lifespan (it may be bottlenecked tho), getting JUST the ps3 will JUST get you the ps3, while you still have to go out and buy all the hdi cables, the new plasma tv (to even GET the desired "graphics" look), the peripherals for you and your friends to now play so you can show it all off, those funky gaming chairs, extra harddrives?, ARGH.

stupid. it's just stupid. i dont hate consoles, i actually had an xbox 360, and i played it mad for a bit, then got my new alienware a few months later and played off and on, on both, then eventually just played my pc nonstop... and have been... still.... then i sold my xbox... plus you don't hear anything about "conspiracies" with pcs like with microsoft and what'not.

in anycase, it's not price that matters, it's the value. you get far more value with a pc than you would with a console.

console: gaming platform

pc: work, gaming, design, communication, etc. platform

^_^

with all these sophisticated and powerful gaming consoles being unveiled, will PC gaming becomea thing of the past?

Nah. as long as video games are around so will pc gaming. after all, pc gaming is where all the cool, cutting edge stuff happens for both software and hardware.

While many PC fanboi's will flame you for this post, your are very correct.

I love PC Gaming, much more then cosole gaming, always have and always will. But the sad trueth is I and many people, cannot afford PC gaming. The new Next Gen concol's(PS3, Xbox360) cost between 400-600$ and will be good for probably 5 years. A gaming rig to run todays best games is atleast $800+ and will really only run these best games for 2 years.

So for me, I am moving away from PC gaming. I'm 23 years old, I work full time, go to college, and rent my OWN townhouse, and I'm starting my own company, PC gaming is no longer in the budget, I use my PSP and Wii much more now.

Let's compare Lost PLanet, DiRT, Gears of War and Bioshock to their console counter parts :) Nope PC gaming is still alive.

The gap is definately getting smaller, and I think by the time next gen consoles come out, the consoles would be almost par with PCs. But, there are always going to be a good number of people who grew up playing on the PC, and will never give up playing from a keyboard and mouse. Most likely the PC will not die out for a long long time, if it ever does. But, there has been a big shift from PC gamers to console gamers, and I don't see why the pattern should change.

As long as PC's are customizable, able to be built from the ground up by users, allow for user created content, allow for the latest and greatest hardware, allow for a better online experience, allowing for multiple control schemes, etc..etc...PC Gaming will be around for a long long time. No need to worry.

but once you own one the upkeep is relatively small.it's just the initial purchase that can be prohibitive. and most people make the mistake of assuming they need to buy a whole new rig instead of seeing what they can re-use from their existing setup.

when i got a ps3a controller and two gamesi paid over $800 so price isn't so much different.

Ummm, well i must have a magic computer since my single core amd cpu still runs games pretty well. Also I STILL have the same amount of RAM that I had when I built my first computer :) My most recent video card didn't even cost 300$ and it runs current games pretty damn good. Now, i'm not some screen queen, so I don't need to run my games at full resolution, so I am quite happy with my setup. Also I have a 360, gamecube and ps2 so calling me a fanboy would be pretty presumptious :D If you seriously think that computers cost too much then maybe you should take into consideration what they do. When was the last time you saw someone using photoshop on a console??? Maybe you can write in C++ on a console?? burn data to cds or dvds on a console??? convert files??? OH wait, since sony said their ps3 is a computer maybe they should just repalce all their servers with ps3's. Being a PC gamer is an investment that if done properly will not require you to shell out tons of money, unless you are an idiot.

it's kind of like cars. everyone likes to drive them but only a select few actually enjoy working on them. everyone likes playing games but only a select few enjoy building their own hardware.

Console games are developed using PCs.

PCs are always getting more hardware faster than consoles will.

There's no reason for PC gaming to die

There's at least one reason for you though.
