Will Spiderman 3, 300, F4ROTSS, and POTC3, take care of HDDVD once and for all?

I've heard that HDDVD won't be getting anymore new titles for the rest of this year. Whereas blu ray has tons of previous blockbuster movies coming out for it later on this year. 300 in July, Fantastic 4 comes out in November, and we already know that Spiderman 3 and the new Pirates movie will be exclusive to blu ray, so.................

Not to mention Transformers(Paramount) which will be outon dvd at the end of this year.

But HD DVD has a nice exclusive feature. Only HD DVD will have adult movies.computerk2002

At some of the stores I go to, they have at least 100 Blu Ray movies and only about 30 HD-DVD ones, which is the better alternative for selection?

Never been true that porn was HD exclusive. All that happened is that the few facilities pressing BR at the time will not press porn, because their contracts with far bigger customers (read Disney, Fox etc) forbid it (there have been mixups like Toy Story and High Fidelity (R rated) in the past)

The Debbie Does Dallas remake for example is shipping on BR, not that it's much of a factor because porn is all moving online and physical media for it is crashing (down 25% in the last year)

Their big problem is that most of Universal's big guns are tied up with Spielberg. A lot of good titles, but no Pirates/Matrix/BTTF/Jurassic Park size system movers. Once you get them to buy in these kinds of titles are important, but they dont' get people to plunk down their cash, and Universal is also quickly running out of them, having blown a huge chunk of their wad already.

But anyways, HD-DVD is already on its way out, as Blu-Ray prices drop to more reasonable levels its adoption will overtake HD-DVD even more so than it currently does. The things those in the HD-DVD camp never mention is the fact that only Toshiba is selling HD-DVD hardware and that they are artificially lowering prices.

Look at all the facts, market conditions and prior precedent and I truly believe it would be insane to purchase HD-DVD hardware at this point in time. Just can't tell that to most people if I don't want them leveling a complaint with my store manager.

The Onkyo is now simply an upgraded XA2, instead of the original from scratch design (improved DACs and codec support), and could be canned altogether at any time. Either way, Toshiba is still the only one actually making the things, just like with RCA where they "borrowed" their name to get HD DVD into stores taht don't carry Toshiba.

And this is what, the third time Samsung has talked combo? Regardless, it will be markedly more expensive than the $3-599 decks that will be out this Christmas. I give it 50/50 at best of ever actually hitting the market, they've been awfully quiet on the subject as of late.

Apples and oranges.

Basically everyone created a reference design, some in collaboration (phillips and Samsung), others because Sony's diode allotment had to go to PS3, and Pioneer had the extra capacity and diodes to handle it (because of the Elite's low print run). The first players adhered very closely to these designs, so naturally coming from the same design, especially the cheaper models like Phillips and Samsung are going to stick very close to that.

Toshiba paid RCA to sell their player, rebranded because many US retailers (namely Circuit City as a big one, that whole "CC supports HD DVD!" thing was simply them agreeing to carry Toshiba products in exchange for a huge discount) did not carry Toshiba products, and they needed to get them in those stores. If you open it up, it is literally identical, right down to the Toshiba names on the boards.

So to sum up- 1 is people following a reference design, the other is simple rebadging of existing product. Kinda like Hi-C ecto cooler is now Orange Tangergreen. It's not the same glowy green,and no slimer, but thesame great taste(less filling) in a new can

So you were saying again? The only thing coming from other companies is rebranded Toshibas and even THOSE coming seems to be more and more unlikely, one other company released a rebranded Toshiba at launch of HD-DVD and they haven't announced another one since.

Toshiba's selling at such a loss other companies don't want to enter the market. Already Sony, Samsung, Pioneer, Phillips, Plextor, LaCie, Microboards, Lite-On and LG have released BD Hardware and thats without knowing what companies manufactured the OEM drives present in some desktop and laptop PCs already.

Software and hardware support is against HD-DVD, advertising is against them, analyst opinion is against them, their own business model is against them. The ONLY thing HD-DVD has going for it right now is standalone player sales and the results this last quarter do not bode well, at half the price BEFORE counting the free movies that HD-DVD fanboys were using as an argument against BD (even though it was false as proven by the Talladega Nights and Casino Royale sales numbers) and it still only managed 60% of standalone sales.

Once the price is equivalent or near equivalent between the two BD will be crushing HD-DVD on that front as well.

Stores like Futureshop and Best Buy hardly carry very many HD-DVD films, but then again they dont carry uber amounts of Blu Ray films either. And only Sony and Samsung have Blu Ray players on the market last time I checked. Sony is releasing one in a weeks time here in Canada that costs 600 dollars (much cheaper then the other ones which are over 1000 bucks). Still expensive for a Blu Ray player yes but the price will continue to drop as the year rolls on.

If you do an actual count of the discs on the shelves, you'll see that the HD section is at best 2/3 as full as BR. They're simply oriented to look fuller than it is

I'll remind everyone that at CES, HD crowed that their relationship with the Chinese crap makers was what is going to save them over BR. There has yet to be a single crap player announced, but here's a BR one.

Anyway, Blu-Ray clearly has the edge over HD-DVD. The few exclusive features that HD-DVD had over Blu-Ray are dissapearing, and also, the so called "porn advantage" is a moot point because porn will not decide the war this time. When VHS came out, the only way you could watch porn was in a porn theater, so stay-at-home perverts went gaga over porn tapes. Now though, porn is everywhere, so it really doesn't matter what HD format is more wank-friendly.

This war is going to be decided by which format has a better selection, better specs, and more corporate support. And Blu-Ray beats HD-DVD into the dirt. The Spider-Man trilogy alone will have more weight than the entire pornography industry combined.

They're probably the #4 retailer of video in the US in terms of raw volume of titles

Andy, thanks for being magnanimous about potential defeat, but in all honesty, I'm getting all the entertainment I need watching the HD fanboys melt down over at AVS :)

I feel this post says a lot about what this announcement could mean, from a guy who hada video store back in the Beta days from AVS:

Back in the stone age when I was a college student I opened a couple of video stores with a buddy and the help of our parents. We used to chat frequently with other "Mom & Pop" retailers as we waited to pick up new releases at our distributor, East Texas Periodicals. The store owners began to comment that their Beta rentals were lagging behind VHS and they were thinking of perhaps dropping that format from their stores. Well, after checking our invoices, we realized that the VHS rentals were indeed outpacing Beta. We made a determination based on our limited resources to go with only one format, VHS of course. We took a chance on abandoning some customers but it actually benefited us greatly. We were now able to expand the titles in our library much faster. Video rental was a new business, and retailers were constantly spying on their competitors to see what they were doing and of course, copying what appeared to be successful strategies. At that point it was like a house of cards collapsing which eventually saw the demise of Beta as a home video format. Oh sure, you could still find a few stores that carried Beta but they were few and far between.

Information flowed slowly in those days, but today, retailers both small and large have the ability to gather and analyzie information in an instant. I happen to believe that this is much more devastating than most people in these threads realize. When a friend of mine told me this rumor a few weeks ago I didn't really believe it. But I guess I believed it enough to move from a neutral position entirely to Blu-ray.

Basically with Blockbuster choosing sides, others will feel free to do so as well, and it's teh start of a domino effect. I'm seeing mass posts about people cancelling orders that haven't shipped yet of players from the last few week's fire sales. Someone even hypothesized that they knew this was coming and that's what prompted it (I personally think that Memorial Day was equally responsible, if not more)

I told you that I would apologize if I was wrong. So I apologize, if this is ultimately the end of HD DVD, then so be it. My360 add-on will still work and play my HD DVD titles, and I'll probably will pick up a Blu-ray player this holiday season. Not bad especially if BD players are around $299. $300 + 200 for both formats, not bad. A lot better than buying a that crappy Sammy Blu-ray player at launch and spending a G.

The best thing to have come from the format war was that HD DVD made Blu-ray get their act together, some of those launch titles and players BD put out were just plain terrible. They still haven't got all of the features down that HD DVD has, but it will completed here in a few months.

If it hadn't been for HD DVD, Blu-Ray wouldn't have launched 6 months early and they wouldn't have had to toss out rushed and unready product to compete.

They were going to soft launch in September and hard in November. As it was they had to rush everything out in June.
