The bank just called me and I just checked my statement, numerous fradulant charges made from outside the USA----steam was hacked!

I clearly remembered that Sony **** up PSN hacking not long ago, and Sony's attititude just pissed me off! Now I realized "Steam was compromised", Valve responded quickly, and I hope that they could fix problems efficiently, otherwise, they could be another Sony, the reputation is deteriorating. Damn speaking, what I want is a safety!

Safe gaming Platform? You do realize you are using Windows right? There isn't such a thing.... unless u buy a console and just play the games offline. As for reputation...only the forums were hacked with Steam. Hopefully they fix the issue and it never happens again.

I don't think I can trust them if my credit card info leaked.

It's steam, it's obviously a totally different story. They were the victims, woe is steam.

...I didn't care about PSN being hacked and I don't care about Steam being hacked.

I don't think this will become as huge of a thing as Sony. For one thing, the forums are already back up. o.O

I think majority of the people who hate Sony post hacking are the people who have always hated the ps3 because they think its online sucks simply because its free, think it costs too much,or are microsoft fan boys. So I really dont think Sony's reputation isn't all that different from before it got hacked. I don't think Valve will be another Sony because Valve probably was prepared for this after the PSN hacking happened. Plus Valve has huge respect among PC gamers and I cant imagine a lot of PC gamers leaving steam because of this.

Also this may just be a strange coincidence but the psn got hacked shortly after portal 2 came out. Portal 2 was the first valve game that had cross online play with steam andthe ps3. Now the next big hacking after sony is steam? I know sega, nintendo, and some other company have been hit too and Im finding it strange nothing has happened to microsoft yet.

If things keep going the way they've been going, Microsoft will eventually be hit too, don't worry.:P

Valve has released that credit card info has been accessed; however, it was encrypted, hashed and salted. It did spread beyond the forums. Just look at the story on GS.

It means your data is most likely safe because they added random gibberish before transforming it into a code which can't be reverse engineered to obtain the initial password. Passwords have to be decrypted one at a time instead of brute forcing entire batches so it's time consuming and you must be really unlucky if you're hacked, heh.

I hate to say it but I kind think it would be a good thing if Microsoft got hacked. That way no one could say there platform has the best online because it can't get hacked. As of now a part of me thinks that this is some microsoft fan boys who really want microsoft to beat sony and pc so they are trying to damage them.

Between only the forums getting hacked and me using PayPal instead of typing in my CC number and letting Steam save it, I'm not too worried right now.

Wasn't just the forums. Don't remember where, but Gabe sent an apology message, and recommended people to change their password, because he couldn't confirm that accounts were NOT hacked.

Didn't he say it wouldn't be a bad idea if you use the same password? Well, I didn't, and just in case I also changed my account password. I've yet to experience any oddities on any front.

Accounts were in danger if people had the same password for the forum and Steam account itself.

Mine did. I used to have the same password for everything until recently, decided to be a bit more careful.

I wouldn't mind if psn is hacked again, and remains down for a month. I never use my ps3, and when they got it fixed they gifted all users with free games such as little big planet and infamous. So go on, i want more free games.

They waited 3 days. Don't get me wrong though, but waiting before informing people is common practice because if it turns out to be a false alarm it could have huge consequences. Which oddly enough never happened as Steam ended up beating all their records this weekend lol

What should have been the main thing is that Sony's backend was inherent secure - the way they stored their passwords made it *easy* for hackers to get at the user/pass combinations, which is one of those 'blindingly obvious + should not be done' things. The only reason companies get away with it is because nobody really checks - and as the hackers 'checked' by getting at their databases, a stupid party ensued. Valve at least seemed to secure their data properly - so even if people get at it, it's essentially impossible for them to do anything with it.

Sony's biggest problem with being hacked was that PSN was down for quite some time. Steam suffered no downtime except for their forums?(dunno because I don't use them). I'm not too worried about either though, Sony didn't have any information on me you can't find through regular methods, steam may have some card numbers but it would just be horrible back luck to be targetted out of millions of similar information thats heavily encrypted and protected.

From what I understand though Sony was targetted because they were sueing hackers cracking the ps3 and games and such, as kind of a payback. I've heard no reason why they hit steam other than just to do it.

Doesn't matter if he is using Windows or not.

Also there really isn't a "safe" gaming platform.

I must say that half of the security I see (in all forms) is not helping, and often hurts more than helps. Security isn't a bad thing, and a lot of times is needed, but here in the Western world, we have invested way too much into the false sense of it. To the point where Security is supposed to be covering things where common sense should have been used as a preventative measure!

I must say I have a little more faith in Valve than Sony. For various reasons, but Sony still make some good products, plan on getting me another ps3 sometime in the future.

you can also just start using gift cards, that helps keep your CC safe.
