Virtual Reality will not happen... at least not in the way we thought, and it probably won't be called that. VR was something that everyone "thought" was the next evolution in gaming, and tried to take technology that way and it failed. End of line for VR.

Virtual reality is already happening. Didn't you watch the videos? Mostly it is applied in the army and the industries, but some small steps into the gaming world have also been made. Give it some time... you say it ain't gonna happen? Wait for 2 decades and I'll bet you have a VR system in your own home. It is the next logical step and we are more close to commercial use than you think.

You will see complete VR worlds emerge in amusement parks, the arcades will offer it and finally it will be affordable for us to buy. It will be in toys, computers, television, media, commercial use is HUGE... etc. etc.

Give it time, I think Nintendo helped us take a step closer to it. Who knows in another 20 years.

My father helped design a system for GM that uses VR so that they can "walk" around in plants before they are built to make sure it will work the way they think it will on paper. It is already in use to a small degree.

Did you make a summary? It happenend to me too...

The website of the goggles and the video to support it are cool. I already knew those goggles, but I've never seen them in action; nice commercial. Was I right to see America's Army? Didn't know they supported VR, cool.

Too bad the resolution still is a little low, but that will change for sure. I think this is very suitable for homegaming, but it's not as cool as the augmentend reality - I would love to have that. Imagine you have your own virtual trainset and when you get bored with it you just load up your own little Jurassic Park, or whatever you like. That would be great!

Now, I would really like to see an OS on VR. I remember seeing a movie once (can't remeber which one) where people had a VR OS. They walked in some sort of library and documents were selected by opening drawers. The possibilities would be endless.

Here's another article on the subject. It's not full blown VR, but it's certainly a step in the right direction:

yeah I made a summary :( the resolution is a pain but with 1280X1024 already out its bound to improve Im going to forget about all the other links bar 1, you'll be very impressed by the real time motion capture going on in the next link, as for augmented reality, yeah that is cool imagine playing Virtual fighter and watching your and your friends character fighting on the table in front of you, AWSOME and a full on VR OS would be cool, you could be in a shopping mall and walk into different doors that load up whatever software you wanted, or shoot different targets that load up what ever software you wanted, the possibilities are endless. ok heres the link, Imagine this in BF2, only 1 word for it WOOHOO, again the possibilities with this are endless, you could go around virtual malls, or virtual pubs just to meet others, or... well anything http://youtube.com/watch?v=6IOsw7DAQG0

wow now that is cool! great link. I think this is a bit further off than VR but still, very cool stuff, A shooting game where your walking down your own street and 'Virtual monsters' jump from behind real bins or around real corners could be cool, you could virtually turn your street/town center into a war zone, with bombers flying overhead, explosions going off all around you, enemies every where, ya would be shooting like mad... but every building would be real, now that is the ****

ya would look a bit silly to others though as you dive out of the way of virtual bullets lol

I mean c'mon, Its been 12 years since the virtual boy.

Headsets are now cheaper and running at a crisp 1280/1084, motion capture can be run off a few small cameras... someone should come up with a way of meshing all that into games. if you could build a skeleton of your skeleton in game, give it a realistic skin virtual reality could be... anything. with resolutions that high you could be in awsomely immersive suroundings, imagine every computer game you ever played with one exception, this time it's you in the driver seat, its you in the trenches with your comrades, its you flying a Jet or weilding a huge sword, or just lying on the beach. the possibilities are endless, SO FFS SOMEONE WITH BIGGER BRAINS THAN ME DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT
GenghisChris82

How do you call the simulated reality you step in everytime you play a video game?

Thats virtual reality, and its been hapening for 30 years.

VR goggles, globes, etc. Are just input/output devices

Not really, you just watch them closer to your eyes, its not like you got plugged into the matrix.

There is a reason why this technology has been available since the 80's and it hasn't proliferated.

Another good example are VR globes (power globe for NES), it was not until the wii that they came up with something actually functional.

VRHMD's display 2 different images, 1 for each eye, giving you a stereoscopic view of the virtual world, a true 3D enviroment. the reason it hasn't taken off is because each screen is tiny and getting a high resolution on a screen so small is very dificult. only in very recent times has the 1280X1024 barrior been broken I see what your saying, so I'm going to refer to this as my view of what virtual reality is. others opinions have been expressed here and thats fine. now if only I had $100K I could create the enviroment I'm talking about :/

It shouldn't be too long now. Nanotechnology is making technology smaller and able to fit into tiny spaces. Lenses that display images should be available within the next 7 years. This will make extremely believeble environments. We already have good audio VR. With advanced nanotechnology we may be able to send nanobots into the brain and we'll somehow gain ultra realistic VR from this. This may come somewhere around 2020-2030.

Technology is accelerating... although we haven't achieved great VR in the last 10 years, technology is becoming advanced enough to make it worthwhile and considerably more cheaper. The computing power we needed is only just getting here too. The 80 core processor chip is said to be avaialble within the next few years. It consumes very little power and is extremely fast. You would have to fill up a huge room of computers with thousands of processors to = the power of this one chip designed by intel.

So we are getting there... the pieces are coming together and it will eventually be worthwhile for companies to bring this forward commercially. It certainly will happen, and soon/..
