I've been thinking of buying a new desktop pc for home use, a few games, none of which are that graphically demanding. However, the computer i was looking at (its a Dell) only has Windows Vista to choose for an operating system... Will this mean i cant play some of the older games, things like morrowind..?

Thanks for any help,

Eggs.

Should be fine, but once you purchase it upgrade to Win7. Also, what are the specs?

I don't think so. You can play older games too. You can find infos about older games on vista. Just google it. By the way, why Dell? I recommend building your own, Dell will rip you off

This. Plus, Vista has had no issues with most of the games I have tried to run (Morrowind runs great on Vista) - I am using the Windows 7 RC right now (pre-ordered with the 50.00 deal @ MS) and it is even better. So, if you insist on going for a pre-built system, make sure they offer a free Windows 7 upgrade certificate. W7 sems to play much more friendly with games than Vista (though Vista is fine in itself)

Stupid choice, Alienware are a complete rip-off. You could save atleast 4000AUD if you went somewhere else.

It is up to you as to which PC you buy.:)

However, look around first. Dell offers on a select few desktop models the option to "downgrade" (their words, not mine) to Windows XP.

You will have a master disc with Vista on it as well.

Vista isn't really going to cause any problems at this point unless you're playing old Win9x-era games that were finicky enough with XP as is. Might as well go for it while making sure that you get a Windows 7 upgrade certificate.

I too have an Alienware. Its an incredibly nice system, and I have had no problems with it at all. It also looks incredibly kick-*** under my desk with its green lighting...

But honestly, you're decieving yourself if you think they don't hike the prices up. I got the RAM that they wanted me to pay $160 on newegg.com for $60. You just have to be careful... really the only reason why I bought an Alienware is because I have friend who happens to buy loads of them for work, and he was able to get me a good deal on one...

Nobody is saying that the quality of the computer that you get from alienware is bad, but we are telling you that the prices are ridiculous. The SAME computer you get from alienware can buy you a *much* better computer from just about anywhere else when you lay the cash down for it. I personally got my latest monster from ibuypower and have loved everything about it, it screams and the customer service was great, they always kept me well informed on the progress.

Personally I searched newegg and could hardly build one for cheaper, (honestly, ibuypower saved me money from what I saw on newegg at the time). Anyways, after all that said my next computer in a few years I will probably build, just for the sake of building my own. Congrats if you're determined to get alienware but just be aware you're basically burning your cash. (This topic is kinda stealing this thread /sorry)
