I supported windows 10 in the beginning but

windows 10 latest update is disappearing downloads other files now there is an option that says go back to windows 7, only microsoft blocks update for windows 7 because the newer cpu's are unsupported hardware and this message regularly pops up after installing the latest updates, so you have to disable automatic updates that msft says you need for security wtf.

also why all the bloatware, it has gotten worse focus assist, cortana blah blah blah I understand some people want full automation but there should be an option that say barebones operating system when installing so none has to go through the process of disabling and uninstalling all the crap.

@Realmjumper: Is this an option where 'clean install' is Microsoft speak for minimum installation?

MS Windows is bloat after XP. The legendary OS and still the best.

It doesn't make sense to install language packs you will never use or programs like voice recognition.

That's why we have fast connections. To download stuff as we need it.

Also, you have to spend time looking up how to stop MS from logging everything you do and uploading it for 'research purposes'.

@Realmjumper: tried but its happen a couple of times before on a previous clean install.

@alucrd2009: if it gets better support from game publishers and drivers from amd, but its definitely an option

@urbangamez: the AMD situation is pretty solid on the drivers front.

i dont know when you last looked into it but the days of gaming on AMD/ati on linux being a running joke are gone. except for the odd snafu (there was a mistake with the 590. its fixed now. i think there are some issues with the newer APUs but i think thats supposed to be sorted in kernel 4.21. there is a big story around that switch which i wont go into.) drivers on the AMD side on linux are up to speed. basically fglrx is now retired and has been for ages.

AMD use the open source stack (mesa basically) for the linux graphics driver and actively contribute to it. mesa itself has come on leaps and bounds over the last 5 years. i can play the likes of F1 2017, warhammer 2 and rise of the tomb raider on my RX 580 no bother. so on the AMD side, as long as your distro has a kernel with the bits needed for your GPU (and unless its the 590 or some APUs modern distros should be fine) its a case of install OS, install game, play game.

i use an a distro called Solus with an R5 1500X and an rx580 4GB and its working quite nicely.

there is also a project called proton being co developed by valve, code weavers and others. its basically wine with some extra bits added to it for making it easier to run windows games on linux. so i can also play the likes of doom 2016 on my PC now and its very stable in my experience. there are loads of games that are getting good reports of compatibility with it but doom and the last remanent (which also runs fine) are the only ones i have tried.

as for developer support: well that is only going to change if more people buy and play their games on linux. developers are listening and watching. square enix are putting some of their games on it (the 3 tomb raider and 2 deus ex games are there for example). sega, codemasters, obsidian (hopefully the MS acquisition wont stop them but thats hoping against hope i think) and others are also getting games to it natively. its not getting the major AAA support from EA and co at the moment but that will change if more people game on linux. indies are also well represented on the OS.

Well, just uninstall/disable all the shit that you don't need in Windows. You can even force the uninstall of some integrated apps without messing up your OS.

And what's wrong with BASIC diagnostics data?
- High level of paranoia? Then don't use internet at all.
- If you do some illegal shit on your PC, then blame yourself.
- Are you afraid that Microsoft will log your midget porn playlist? Leave that to your ISP...

When new games stop supporting W7 I may go to W8. I will never install W10 again it's worst then Vista in my eyes W10 force fed updates is unacceptable trash.

interesting post. I just recently started using a macbook for developer work so Ive gotten familiar with terminal. Also use bash with windows, and the new powershell for windows 10. Ive actually been itching to get back into linux, and one of the things that turned me off it before was the crap driver support. Try getting some drivers for your crap $10 logitech speakers, or your mouse or keyboard. Video cards had 0 support the last time I tried out ubuntu and even something simple like getting wifi to work was a chore. Has things changed recently?

@blaznwiipspman1: how long has it been since you used it?

i cant' give any feedback or advice on a macbook specifically as i dont have one. If you are interested then check online to see how well its supported. i'm not even sure if the install process is any different with macs.

AMD now just works on the GPU side on linux. fglrx is long dead. amd commit to the open source stack now instead. I use an RX 580 and have had no major issues with games ranging from tomb raider, rise of the tomb raider, Dawn of war 2, F1 2017, total war games and so on. performance is generally good and continues to improve little bit by little bit.

no major issues come to mind on the CPU side either. ryzen works just fine (i use a 1500X on a gigabyte B350 mobo). I hear of issues with the latest APUs but i dont know the details and they may already be fixed. intel and their iGPUs are also well supported on linux from what i hear...i dont have one so dont have first hand experience.

Nvidia: you need to use the closed source driver for good performance but thats still well supported and generally performs well too from what i hear (again...i dont have one). switching between GPUs on laptops using optimus is not ideal mind. it works but its a manual process as i understand it.

As for other stuff: wireless: check online before buying. i think support for intel wireless is generally good. for me i havent had a wireless issue on linux in yonks. a long long time ago i had to use ndiswrapper to get my wireless working but that was ages ago. between some laptops and my current dongle (though it is old) over the last few years its just plug it in, enter wifi password and you are off.

peripherals: i use a logitech mouse (the performance MX i think its called. it doesnt say on the mouse :S) and keyboard connected to their unifying dongle. works fine. I have a 360 and steam controller: work just fine.

audio: i do have an odd issue where sound can crackle a bit out of the box but the fix is quick and simple. it doesnt seem to be a very common problem though.

ymmv...as i said i have no idea about linux on macbooks. but if you are interested it could be worth just booting a distro from a live USB stick and see whats working.

@Yams1980: agree windows 7 is still great, the cpu makers have joined with ms on this they dont want to release any mobo or chipset drivers for the new products, they could have at least waited until 10 was a lot more stable. hpoefully ms will make changes so consumers can have minimum install of windows 10 without all the apps .

@osan0: thanks. ill prolly give linux another try on old pc just to test out and see how it goes, need a few more parts first though. will update post then.

@WESTBLADE: I don't appreciate being abused and attacked by bullies. Its not my fault i have limited bandwidth, i live in a rural area with wireless broadband and pay over 120 dollars per month in for 100gbs a of data per month.

I have to careful decide what games to buy and how often to update. For example, I'm a big fan of the original doom but never even played the newer Doom yet because the download was too big.

Toxic abuse people like yourself should move onto another site. You are just bringing people down in this place. 99% of the people here are great but i've seen you abuse a lot of people in many forum posts and its not acceptable.

If you think i'm bullying you, then you've got no idea what bullying is -> i've been physicaly and psychicaly bullied for almost my whole life. My ''best friend'' of 20 years hacked my facebook account and made me look like a complete psycho. By hacked i mean not using my password, btw. I know for sure that he's too stupid when it comes to PC's, he just paid to some other human waste to do that. I even found out that he wanted to steal mine and my family member's ID cards to use it for online gambling.

And if you think i'm abusive and toxic, just because i'm stingy at people who have no common sense and no valid arguments, please report me and let the Gamespot staff decide.

Just read again what you wrote:

''I use Windows 10 upgrade assistant which is more reliable to do the big updates they do every several months but the sneaky part is, windows will delete the 4gb file after you do the update... so you gotta be fast and quickly duplicate the file somewhere else before it finishes the update or you will have to redownload the entire f!@king file again if you want to install the update on other PCs.''

So, just because you apparently refuse to do your own research, let me help you a bit:

https://www.microsoft.com/software-download/windows10 - Just download Media Creation Tool and follow the instructions.

There's only two of these ''big'' updates a year: It's called Spring Update and Fall Upgrade for some reason, i really wonder what that might be...??

Don't spread false information as facts. Then you get majority of people thinking that sushi is raw fish and shit like that.

Did you proof read your initial post?

''I have it installed just incase i need it for a game, so far there hasn't been any need to even use it.''

Err...? Then don't use at all til January 2020 when Windows 7 gets no support from MS?

P.S. If you can't handle that YOU wrote complete and utter nonsenses to begin with, someone proves you wrong, and renders your ''complaints'' invalid, then don't use internet at all? (i used your own ''logic'' on you, awesome right?)

''99% of the people here are great'' There's not that many clueless people on Gamespot forums...

@urbangamez: The Microsoft Knowledge base used to be an amazing resource. It is a mammoth database of updates with package files to download for every windows driver and app going back to at least XP.

I used to download pkg files from it for updates I might use later or drivers which are obscure or esoteric as it is labyrinthian. I used to have a drivers folder. Don't bother these days.

WESTBLADE It's not the midget porn I'm worried about it's the enriched uranium and people smuggling operation... I've said too much.

I would just like to know exactly what MS is monitoring, logging, compiling and uploading just out of pure curiosity and I'm too lazy to look it up as I'm not using my pc right now which is Windows 7.

I think this should definitely be the subject of litigatory scrutiny or at the very least opt-in.

@WESTBLADE:Well I'm halfway through reading it and it's all quite murky.

There's no surprised here - it's exactly what I expected.

There appear to be two options:

  • Basic diagnostic data is information about your device, its settings and capabilities, and whether it is performing properly. This is the minimum level of diagnostic data needed to help keep your device reliable, secure, and operating normally.
  • Full diagnostic data includes all data collected with Basic, along with information about the websites you browse, how you use apps and features, plus additional information about device health, device activity (sometimes referred to as usage), and enhanced error reporting. At Full, Microsoft also collects the memory state of your device when a system or app crash occurs (which may unintentionally include parts of a file you were using when a problem occurred). While your device will be just as secure and operate normally if you choose the Basic level of diagnostics, the additional information we collect at Full makes it easier for us to identify and fix issues and make product improvements that benefit all Windows customers.

The difference being full monitors your applications activity as well as operating system activity. Basic is required. Apparently to.

  • Comprehend the immense number of hardware, system, and software combinations customers use.

Also troubleshooting. But I will let them know when I have a problem and can easily look at Event Manager.

I don't buy that it's required to log all your activity just to keep your device 'reliable, secure and operating normally'. That sounds like scaremongering to me.

Or all that stuff about needing the data because of they need to 'Comprehend (?!) the immense number of hardware, system, and software combinations customers use' making their job of making a good operating system so hard they need to monitor everyone's system in the world just doesn't hold water for me.

Look on ebuyer.

Fie on Microsoft! They are building up marketing data for money. It's not rocket science.

@jackamomo:

I still don't see the issue here. You CAN choose between BASIC and FULL when you install/update your Windows and/or change it in settings. It's not some super hidden option or manual registry edit, lol.

That's why i use only BASIC diagnostics and don't see a problem with them seeing my PC specs and OS settings...

I don't see that as some kind of a threat, just like i gave permission to Valve, EA and Ubisoft to look at my hardware specs and send steam/origin/uplay crash reports. Might get them an idea of world-wide average user hardware and fix common issues.

Would never leave them to do FULL tracking of my every move willingly, though.

Hmm, you can get most of the data back, though. I'd recommend: https://www.ccleaner.com/recuva and while you're at it, you can get rid of all the unwanted Win10 apps people like to complain on the same site: https://www.ccleaner.com/ccleaner

@retrogamer_gr: go with the mac. Such good value. So reliable. So excellent. Reassuringly expensive, like Kronenberg. Don't drink Fosters, pay a pound extra and be classy.

I love Apple so much.

If PC is the master race. Apples are a future godlike race of integrated software and peripheral worshipers of the "closed ecosystem". You can deck your whole house out in Apple products and live in the Jetsons. No can can breach your Apple approved ecosystem with inferior smelly products or inferior Flappy Bird clones from the App store.

Hmm, sorry for not using past tense.

Well, but now you know you could do something if you didn't panic, though. Honestly, some years ago i accidentaly deleted my whole (basicaly full) 2TB drive, with some stuff like... few years worth of work (a nearly finished 3d model i spent six months on, and all of the finished/unfinished previous ones...>.>)

Found out about drive recovery tools, but too late, so can kinda relate...

@jackamomo:

Look. I get why people hate apple. But after 2 months of use I still can't get used to Linux and because my cpu doesn't support Win7 ( or even 8.1 ), apple is my only option ( and no a 4 year old used computer with no warranty isn't an option ).

If microsoft stops releasing shitty updates that end with bsods or even deleting all my files, I'll come back to windows.

And who talked about an ecosystem?

I don't use any ecosystem and don't plan to spend 10k€ on one.

But please go on.

@retrogamer_gr: you (understandably) misunderstood. I've been using Apple's since they got popular in the late mid 90's on graphic courses, art courses then for work. Since they moved to Intel they are finally amazing.

I always liked the look of it but those Power PC's were just creaking along trying to run Photoshop, After Effects, Illlustrator blah blah, It was painful.

But now. The OS is so sleek it's mouth watering. All that stuff was not sarcasm. I've not found the 'ecosystem' restrictive. You just have to remember you have to right click on a downloaded application and click open to be able to run it if it's not got a genuine Apple certificate.

But as I moved into web design, I realised how amazing using command line is in Terminal with all the sofware like BASH and APACHI built into the OS. The OS has so many brilliant applications that Windows just doesn't have.

All Apple software works really well since around my model from mid 2010. Which is when hardware kind of topped out at 2.5ghz 5i. Software or even games don't really need more than that, even 8 years later.

But get a new one an increase the warranty because I spilt a drink on mine outside it's warranty - what a nightmare.

But I found it more productive to work on than Windows and as Steam ports games over to SteamOS, they usually get the OSX treatment too as OSX is UNIX based as is Linux, using root as the base of the file system.

They come with nice gpu's and 2d accelerators. The only weird thing is, the mouse moves slowly. Also OSX comes with BootCamp so you can dual boot into Windows or whatever if you want obviously.

I just find Apple products so much fun and enjoy using my magic mouse and keyboard.

But those ones with a screen instead of function keys I do not like the look of. I like keys. I'm talking about the new laptops with no function keys.

You can actually run mac OS on a standard pc if you want.

EDIT: I see you are talking about OS's exclusively. Oops.

I get what your saying about Linux. Nerds rule Linux in a giant lumbering github repository of minor incremental updates downloaded from command line.

Linux expects you to know command line. That is why hardly anyone uses it. Even to move files around you need to understand how to change file permissions on command line.

Until someone decides to make a user friendly Linux (where you don't need command line, like at all) it will only be for hobbyists really.

It's not that easy though. The only reason I got the hang of it was just asking work colleagues so people explained it to me and I didn't have to look anything up which is kind of lucky really.

You need to perfectly understand the syntax in order to not get confused. That is about as easy as expression language to a newbie. That is, impenetrable.

If you persevere though you will feel like Neo from the Matrix and if you are working on coding stuff you will start to understand how lame mice actually are for dealing with computery file things.

If you just want to play games though it's probably the same as Linux as usually games come out for both platforms at the same time as I said.

WESTBLADE Why didn't you give them full access Westblade? Is it because you're running a global crime syndicate?

No, it's because i've read the privacy policy of the license agreement and didn't agreed to share my PERSONAL data, because i'm not FORCED to? Just like i didn't agreed to give my phone operator the right (hi to GDPR) to sell my personal data to another random companies, so they can call me five times a day offering cheaper internet and free diapers?

If you're trying to be a smart-ass, i'm gonna use something for slow people -> I decide to live in appartment building in a bigger city (Fiber Optics Internet) instead of some small village (Slow ~whatevercrap~Internet), where i chose my appartment (Windows 10), before i moved in i had to agree to read and sign contract (License Agreement), where i agreed to let people into my appartment if there's internal reconstruction going on because i have to and also it affects all the occupants, whom also have to (Basic Diagnostic), but i didn't agree that the building owner (Microsoft) can walk anytime in my appartment to ask if everythings okay (Feedback Questions), or install security cameras, because i don't need need nursing (sharing my privacy), therefore i said NO (Full Diagnostic). When i won't like my appartment (Windows 10) anymore, i might move to another one (other operating systems).

SO?

-----------

Are you so ashamed of your pc internals so much that even basic diagnostics is offending you or what??? NO ONE is forcing you to use Windows 10. You can switch to other OS -> YOUR nonsense problem solved.

@WESTBLADE: The question is, would you enable even Basic if you had to?

I sent Valve my specs, sure no problem. They don't need permanent access to it though.

It's creepy.

@retrogamer_gr:what parts are you not getting used to on Ubuntu? It is a bit more of a jump from windows in terms of the UI so understandable. There are other distros like Mint which i think are a bit more familiar to windows users in the UI department. is there something specific you are trying to do that's odd?

@jackamomo: for day to day use (which for me is browsing dinternet, playing games, listening to music.) i dont need to use the command line for anything on linux. I can copy, delete, edit and change permissions of the files i own all through the GUI on my distro. same with system updates. i get those through my distros software store (another GUI application). it can be done through the command line too but i dont use it that way. Setting up wifi: no command line needed either.

i only really use the command line when troubleshooting and thats pretty rare in my experience over the last 5-6 years.

like with any OS, when something does go wrong you will probably need to learn some things to get it fixed. that's just computers at the end of the day.

System admins, making servers and setting up the system in a very specific way (e.g. programmers setting up their toolchains in a specific way) do need to use the terminal a lot more. but in my experience i just don't use the command line that often and i'm certainly no expert in using it.

Ya know what's really creepy? Someone who made some webdesign and is worried about being spied on without noticing. And no, i'm not just talking about some cookies here or some conspiracy bull*...

@WESTBLADE: if Microsoft is using its data for advertising then I am being used by MS.

It’s the principal.

With the fall update microsoft delete all my files - 500GBs...

I use Ubuntu after that but I can't get used to it. A week ago tried a friend's macbook and now I am on the market for one.

I personally wasn't a fan of Ubuntu, maybe try different shells, like KDE/Kubuntu, KDE is my go to shell for linux.

Other distros that I deem superior to Ubuntu:

PCLinuxOS

Manjaro

Sabayon

Magiea

Chakan

Just to name a few.

"With the Windows 10 Mobile OS end of support, we recommend that customers move to a supported Android or iOS device. Microsoft's mission statement to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more, compels us to support our Mobile apps on those platforms and devices."

Everyone: This is a thread about Win 10 desktop. Go kill yourself, retard.

Me: I know, I just thought it was funny that--oh, never mind.

@AlexKidd5000: Nah, he's not interested in Linux.

There's just too much command line needed.

OSX is a really good OS based on UNIX and just as stable as Linux.

It aimed at even less computer literate people than Windows though.

The interface is a dream.

OSX is without a doubt the best operating system ever developed.

[EDIT] I said earlier in the thread it could be installed on any pc. This is not the case. It was at one point however and may be again.

You can use the provided BootCamp application to install Windows onto a Mac though.

Windows users may be confused by the different more enclosed software architecture though. But it doesn't really stop you doing anything.

It also integrates with any iphone, ipad, apple tv stuff you have very well.

So sayeth the Wise Joobbbbss....

Oh my god...you did NOT just mention OSX! I'm just gonna pretend you never said it...

Anyway, I've been using Manjaro for years, and you never really have to touch the terminal, unless you really want too. It's certainly not mandatory, except for extremely rare occasions, like a plugin/addon I installed for Firefox that could only be installed by pasting a link into the terminal and hitting enter. Or software that lack GUI's.

Funny thing tho, I notice Ubuntu requires you to use the terminal WAY more than a lot of other distros, which is funny, because Ubuntu is supposed to be the easy to use distro. And people always give Manjaro crap for being way too hard to use, and needing to use the terminal too much, which is not the case.

@AlexKidd5000: Linux is considerably cheaper than OSX though.

He wants to play games.

Steam port games over to SteamOS which is UNIX based. OSX is unix. So now there are loads of Mac and Linux games on Steam.

@jackamomo: Linux ain't Unix, It's Unix-like, but not actually Unix. OSX is Unix I believe.

There are over 1000 games for Linux now I think, maybe close to 2000. Linux now has Proton, which is a modified WINE for Steam so now a lot more Windows games will run now on Linux, for the most part, you know how wine is.

@AlexKidd5000: Yeah I like the idea of Linux and if I find a reason to, would like to learn it.

I think it's more useful as a portable (eg self contained on usb stick) os though or a hobby.

I think you can get Linux in under a megabyte.

It's really fun to use.

'Damn Small Linux' comes to mind lol, not 1 megabye, but 50MB is still really friggin small. Sadly, it has been dormant since 2008. Linux can be used for anything really.

Puppy Linux is another tiny linux distro that comes to mind.

@AlexKidd5000: Yeah command line can be fun but you need to have a reason to use it as in doing programmingy kind of things.

Setting up virtual servers in OSX was so easy though as it has a 'LAMP' stack pre-installed with Apachi and... It's been a while. But it was much easier than using MS Windows once you understand the syntax and sudo vim etc. Also how UNIX directories work.

I really like the underlying architecture of UNIX/UNIX-like OS's. It seems more solid than the WindowsNT kernal in use since Windows 2000 [citation needed] and more well organised.

The window sorting and desktop switching effects are very smooth.

With MS Windows you need to install GNOME and BASH command line and there is no use of the windows 'prompt' which is relegated to disc and file management and repairs (correct me if I'm wrong again). OSX comes with an app called Automator for writing AppleScript I believe.

If you want an OS with a wide range of multimedia applications, Macs are also alot more useful than Linux as an OS.

Yeah, so do I. And I like Arch's "pacman" system.

I wouldn't know anything about the server side, but Linux is extremely popular as a server OS.

Always been a KDE fan. Pretty much every linux shell is great.

The openness of linux, and being heavily community driven will pretty much assure that it will be around for a long time to come. I like that it is not controlled by one single entity like Windows is.

Linux has quite a bit of multimedia software, but it most likely dosen't compete with mac.

What is that?

Mac servers are generally used in offices with lots of macs in them. As always, they are a premium and expensive product.

But macs are used by professionals simply because they are aimed at that market. DTP, midi, film editing, design, artwork etc. The pro laptops are top of the line.

People tend to buy macs for work. Mostly in the creative industries as you probably knew.

But programmes favour them too. The Girl With a Dragon Tattoo uses them for hacking.

@jackamomo: It's the way the terminal works, package manager, not that you really have to use it, but I personally like it more than apt-get.

Yeah, a lot of professionals use them for sure. But it seems Apple has been neglecting there desktop machines.
