Ok,

So there are some of us that can not afford to upgrade our dear old computers but still have a love for PC gaming, so we go with the strongest video card that we can put in our old computers. Now windows Vista on single core computers in regards to gaming from my experience on high end and low end hardware has a huge performance drop from 20% to 50% depending.

My question is as such, has anyone seen windows XP performance in windows 7 either through the beta or a site OR do you believe that windows XP will continue to be the power house gaming OS that it is as current?

My Specs:

Amd Athlon 64 2800+ @ 1980 Mhz

2048 DDR @ 333 Mhz

MSI K8M800 Neo-V

Sapphire Ati Radeon HD 3850 AGP

Antec True Blue 480

Creative X-fi Xtreme Music

Custom Case

Seagate 7200RPM 200GB HDD

Tests:

HL2 Lost Coast 75FPS @ MAX 1440x900 4xAA 16XAF

3dMark06 5300

Call of Duty 4 62 FPS @ MAX 1440x900 2xAA 16xAF

Its really hard to say since I haven't used XP since like 2005, but I do currently have Windows 7 loaded on a Dell Mini 9 netbook and a Macbook Pro with bootcamp. As far as your machine running it, it should really since my netbook runs it fine and even plays pre-2003 games without a hitch, just need to overclock the GMA950 on it and it works. I'd say just throw a copy on there and see for your self.

If I was you, I'd upgrade your computer instead of buying windows 7. Windows 7 is good, don't get me wrong, but I doubt you would benefit from it. You would benefit a lot more from a better cpu and gpu.

Indeed. While Win 7 performs better than Vista in some cases, the opposite it also true. The older OS (XP) will remain the fastest overall. It's best adapted to older machines.
