Right now i am running the windows 7 rc1 7100 build os, now that the 7600 is available, what would be the difference, and what is the advantage of upgrading?

I don't think there will be much difference (if at all) in the actual way the OS works, the RC is pretty close to the finished article.

However, there is no support from Microsoft for the RC, I don't think there will be any downloadable updates for it once the final release is out, from March (??) next year it will shut down your system every 2 hours and then from July (??) next year it will expire completely.

You can't get the 7600 without pirating it. Unless you are in technet/msdn, wait 3 weeks like me.

Well the RTM (Release To Manufacturers) version is pretty much the final build that will be released to retailers for distribution etc. Everything in it is final and nothing will be added/changed unless applied through Windows Update. Also, it probably has more thing added like under the hood stuff that the Beta & RC didn't have . So pretty much it's the version you'd want instead of a Beta or RC build. Oh yeah, I don't think the betas and RC builds will be supported with updates..so why stay with those builds!

Because getting the RTM is illegal unless you got it exclusively from Microsoft?

I have the 7100 build. When the retail comes out, will i be able to purchase a copy and somehow just enter the 25 digit seriel key in somewhere and it will be up to date? Or will I have to do a clean install?

The 7100 build is hard-coded to disable itself next year.

You have to buy the full release version of the OS or you'll have no working OS next year.

7100 is still a glorified beta, it's pretty much what you'd expect.

Stop assuming everybody's making reference to something illegal..Jesus Christ!! There's a few legal means to get the RTM build...did I tell him to go torrent it? NO! So please don't play the PC police..thank you!!

Sorry, but it's true. A clean install will be necessary. I thought I even saw it say so somewhere in the fine print on one of the pages you have to go through to download the RC.

What are these legal means? (PS I could care less if you pirate it, it's just that posting it on a public forum is totally not a good idea).

OK, so me discussing the RTM build and recommending it is against the forum rules? Hop off my back, I did not tell him where and how to obtain it..and infact I don't even have the RTM build..I have a RC build on another PC and WONT get Windows 7 until it's October release. You're obviously not a moderator here on the forums because you just assume way to much. What I said is way within the forum policy. There's nothing wrong with saying "The RTM version is what you want" OBVIOUSLY if you're capable of getting it upon legal means. Nuff said I proved my point. And I like the way you guys tried to add that typical Fox News spin on things..sheesh!!

EDIT: The few legal means that are/will be available are through, MSDN, Technet, and Connect - if that applies to you

All he's saying is that you suggested he get the RTM, and there is NO legal way of getting it right now, whether you're talking MSDN, Technet, or voodoo magic. No one is pointing fingers or assuming anything. You literally suggested something that can only be accomplished illegally. That's like me suggesting that someone just get a no CD patch for a game, but then insist that I wasn't talking about them actually DOING anything illegal. It's illogical. [quote=enriK233]it's meh i hate windows 7

why?? it is superior to all microsoft's previous OSes by a considerable margin.

No, they will be available in 3 weeks for technet/msdn subscribers, that includes me in there.

Lol MSDNAA FTW!!! I am in the Academic Alliance part of MSDN so I get it, so I could get it without pirating, so don't ASSUME things... But I doubt it is much better than 7100... just a bit more stable perhaps. Whatever, Long live Windows XP PRO!

From http://blogs.msdn.com/e7/archive/2009/04/07/delivering-a-quality-upgrade-experience.aspx : Here's what you can do to bypass the check for pre-release upgrade IF YOU REALLY REALLY NEED TO:

1. Download the ISO as you did previously and burn the ISO to a DVD.
2. Copy the whole image to a storage location you wish to run the upgrade from (a bootable flash drive or a directory on any partition on the machine running the pre-release build).
3. Browse to the sources directory.
4. Open the file cversion.ini in a text editor like Notepad.
5. Modify the MinClient build number to a value lower than the down-level build. For example, change 7100 to 7000.
6. Save the file in place with the same name.
7. Run setup like you would normally from this modified copy of the image and the version check will be bypassed.

Few people will look at the above link and just follow the instructions, so I'll detail a bit of why the upgrade is originally disabled. This is a beta release, meant for testing purposes. It is the developer's responsibility to test a beta to as close of a real-world experience as possible. Build-by-build upgrades are unlikely in the real world. Clean installs are much more likely. Therefore, to approach real-world scenarios as much as possible, Microsoft was looking for telemetry that was related to this more likely scenario. What's the point of beta testing an occurrence that is unlikely in the real world. When the software is released, then upgrades will be enabled by default, because that's what people want. But you're getting software made for testing. Fortunately, they're sensitive to the court of public opinion, so they've released a way to disable this. They've been extremely flexible with their Win7 pre-release process.
