I like most of it... but the lack of a traditional Start Button/Menu is bothering me...
(unless I missed something and you can enable it)

Well it was bound to happen. The idea behind the market is for the APPS to work on every platform (ie, Windows Phone, Windows Tablet, Windows Desktop). Not to be confused with software applications like Microsoft Office.I can't believe they added an app market:roll:

It probably won't confuse you or me or even most of the people visiting this forum, but this is an OS for the masses. I hope they clearly indicate what cross platform "apps" are for those people.guynamedbillyAhh I get what you mean.
Hows the performance in games,is it better than windows 7?mafia97Haven't tried any games on it, cause drivers wouldn't be even out anyway. BUT, the performance of the OS is top notch (even in Preview State). It is very smooth switching between applications.
I've been getting weird performance issues in Battlefield 3 to the point where the game isn't playable, but everything else works fine. :(
Like I said, Preview Versions are mostly just to check out the new features of the OS.... not to game or use for work etc.I've been getting weird performance issues in Battlefield 3 to the point where the game isn't playable, but everything else works fine. :(

Can't wait to get it, Y U NO ACCEPT PRE-ORDERS Microsoft?DanielDustHave Microsoft ever taken pre-orders?
It's great if you just want to get into your apps quickly and comfortably. BUT, I hope they put in an option to use the classic start menu if you want to.I will stay away from that as far as I can. I don't like the whole app idea. I want an OS to operate my PC, not some weird refined APP version.

Like MS said. The last MAJOR revamp of Windows was back when it went from 3.1 to Win95. (and they didn't let us down then)
Let's see how this revamp goes.

Maybe you're right and time will tell whether this is a step in the right direction. But I like it when I can configure applications with as many options as possible. It's true that apps are way easier to use for the common people, but I want to be able to manage myself as much as possible and apps won't let me do that. It is clear that apps are invented to make mobile life more comfortable, and they are fine for just that, but I see no added value in using it for PC. It limits my options and that can't be a good thing. For example, I hate it when normal websites turn into these weird app-sites; just keep those two worlds separated!
Have Microsoft ever taken pre-orders? FelipeInsideNope :(, but I want to have it the first second it's available, I love everything I hear and see about it, performance and Metro too (especially Metro).

about drivers it uses the same as win7JigglyWiggly_Yeah mostly. It detected everything perfectly on my test PC.
Tbh it looks like s**t. Apps? I guess it's a bit early to judge but from what I have seen it has nothing that appeals to me.
I haven't followed Windows 8 at all. I was kinda hoping it would go away since I just bought 7 for my new computer back in July. I know it's too early to tell, but do people think this'll be an improvement to the OS or yet another terrible OS from MS?

My sentiments, exactly.
with the developer preview I was able to remove the metro start menu via registry tweak, then it was ok. Seemed to work slightly better than windows 7 for some things.
The old Windows is still in there...
I absolutely hate Metro, and I find it ironic that I'll have to spend several hours of in-depth investigation; in order to get the new, mainstream friendly Windowsproperly accessable, but it's all still there......
It's pretty awesome that the desktop is sort of "just another app", but the GUI lacks a crapton of shortcuts, including every single important configuration option and the command line. Having spent limited time with it, the only way to the control panel I know of, is to right-click the desktop and backtrack through the basic graphics settings.
Performance looks good and I kinda like Windows 8, but user-friendly as it may be, it's extremely unintuitive and assbackwards for experienced users.
[QUOTE="jer_1"]Giving Micro$oft a back door into my computer where they can remove and edit programs or apps at their own will is a major NO NO to me. Screw windows 8, it's already completely worth ignoring. They can spy on you enough through windows 7, why give them even more options to track and modify your computer? Also, it looks like sh&t.Mystic-GThat's new to me. Can you link me where they discuss that?
Yes, I too would like to see where, and how they plan to control my pc more than previous OS.
I would like to see if this is something sensationally blown out of proportion, or something actually big and swept under the rug.
I plan on building a new rig by the end of the year/beginning of next. I am thinking of going Windows 8, if its good, and has good driver support. Gaming drivers will come pretty quickly, so I am not really worried about that. (gpu and the likes)
What I am more worried about are audio drivers, a lot of other programs may not be coded to work with it quite as well yet, for composing or mixing music. If Win 8 has good support in that area by the time I finish building that new rig, (and performance is atleast as good as Win 7) I will prolly go with it, simply because it will be supported longer in the time frame of when I built the computer compared to windows 7.

It's just one of those people who think everyone is out to spy on him. Win8 lets you sync lots of stuff to the cloud, using your Live Account, nothing more. The idea behind Win8 is to MERGE all the platforms together. Phones, Tablets, XBOX, Laptops and Desktops. So they all use a similar Menu System and Apps are compatible on each platform.I haven't followed Windows 8 at all. Dang it, I just bought Windows 7!GooeykatIt's all good mate. Win7 is going to be around for years to come. Most business have upgraded to 7, bypassing Vista so don't worry about ur purchase....u have bought the BEST Windows OS ever created.
I dont want a sh*tty underlying tablet OS on my desktop. Give me one or the other. Let me completely disable the stupid ass metro. Also, why the **** does metro scroll to the side. My mouse doesn't have a ****ing side scrolling wheel.
I enjoyed this article about a tech's first experience with Windows 8. It's quite unbiased as well.

This was apart of his conclusion of his first impressions.
After playing with the OS, it's painfully obvious Windows 8 should be marketed purely for touch devices. The fact that it can run regular desktop applications may suggest otherwise, but even in desktop mode, everything tries to get you back to the Metro interface as soon as possible. In fact, desktop mode feels a lot like a virtual machine, existing for those rare moments when you need to dock your tablet to a keyboard and get some meaningful work done. Admittedly, I could happily put up with the annoyances of the desktop interface if I were only using it in such short bursts.
For devices without touch capabilities, things will get a little dicey. It would be unfortunate if Microsoft decided to force this touch-optimized interface on its corporate customer base. Windows 8 feels positively schizophrenic when used with the keyboard-and-mouse combo common among business users. Unless Microsoft has plans in place to simultaneously support and promote Windows 7 as its desktop-oriented OS, a "Professional" version of Windows 8 with the ability to turn off the Metro enhancements and reinstate the Start menu would be a smart move. At this point, I wouldn't even consider purchasing the OS for a desktop or laptop I needed to be productive using. It's simply the wrong tool for the job.TechReport
Every iteration of Windows since XP has taken functionality away from the user. I think they are trying for a more user friendly Windows experience, which is exactly what I don't want. Pretty soon there will be "wizards" for everything and you won't be able to customize anything anymore. perfect example is the "personalize" option that replaced the "properties" option going from xp to vista, you have to wade through so much crap dedicated to aesthetics to even get to device manager. Everything useful is hidden away in ridiculous sub menus.
One thing that's a huge imrpovement form xp to vista/7 is the search bar, I mean it's the best thing ever.Every iteration of Windows since XP has taken functionality away from the user. I'll agree with you there. I like how it auto-searches as you type stuff like Google does.
Really? That's the perfect example? Let's see. Windows key + pause|break > device manager. You're just some dumbass that spreads dumbass things to your friends and then they buy a Mac. To quickly access the Control Panel, go back to Metro by hitting the Windows Key, type in Control (you may only need to type con), and hit Enter. (In fact, you can do that in Windows Vista and 7 as well.) Moreover, you can search Apps by hitting Windows Key + Q and search Settings by hitting Windows Key + W.Really? That's the perfect example? Windows Search can save a lot of time wading through menus. And if you want to save more time, pin the programs you use the most to the taskbar and hit Windows Key + 1-9.
