I think the new Windows 8 is terrible, it's designed for gamers..... yet it has touch screen features. More like casual gamers on their touch screen tablets playing touch screen gamesmep69
Use the desktop mode and you'll never have to use any of the Metro Apps ever. EVER. Just use the Start Screen, which is easier to use and just as functional as the start menu.

Start menu has been useless to me since Vista. Move the search UI else where and the Start menu is completely obsolete.

Mr_BillGates

The Start menu is far from useless....

I've spent ages removing bloat of various kinds in order to achieve this:

and Metro does it's very best to clutter my UI with rarely used shortcuts.....

Start menu is far from useless, it's just extremely underappreciated and underused.

Edit: Most of those "ages" were obviously spent on "under the hood" changes.

Edit: While I realize some people regard my approach as a lot of unused space, I consider it visually appealing in it's simplicity and every single program on my computer is readily available through the start menu and my folder link.

Having everything availble on your home-screen is a touch concept anyway, I don't want to look at something till I intend to use it.

Win 8 is clearly designed for tablets at this point. Unless there is a very simple method of getting a more mouse and keyboard friendly UI then I will be skipping this version of Windows. Skipping Vista did me no harm and I think Windows 7 is just fine. bonafidetk
You mayaswell go mac then because this will be part of windows forever now.

What an.idiotic thing to say. just because win8 is coming out doesn't mean U are forced to upgrade. I won't be, Win7 does all I need and more. I am planning on buying a Win8 tablet though.

Stardock has better work for these kinds of things imo.

kozzy1234

Agreed I have been using stardock/rocketdock since XP. I will probably remain on 7 till 8 gets a SP, or if I can find a decent deal on an ultimate package.

Wow, windows 8 looks atrocious. I'd be willing to bet that lack of a start menu is the least of it's problems.jer_1
They needed to make the interface as ridiculous as possible, to hide the fact that performance isn't improved. Keep focusing on the irrelevant Microsoft, that'll show 'em.

Windows 8 = the end of the Windows ride for me. I went ahead and dual booted linux Ubuntu on my PC with Windows 7. I'm not interested in Micro$oft, outside of playing games. So, if I'm not playing a game I'll be using Linux Ubuntu. I absolutely cannot stand the whole "touch screen" concept, or the concept of Windows 8 in general.

The only way I will upgrade is if game support stops for Windows 7. As for now I see no direct disadvantages for staying with Windows 7 and Ubuntu. I could upgrade my ram as far I NEED to with Windows 7, play whatever games and upgrade my video drivers, etc. Windows 8 is completely unncessary as far as I am concerned and should stick to tablets.

release version will probs have a way to revert to desktop start menu setup. Just like Win7 still has the 'classic' option in the preferences. This is just MS' way of forcefully showing off its new little tablet interface. Not making a 'revert' option would be suicide for this OS though. Not everyone owns a tablet, not everyone wants a tablet and certainly not everyone wants to use that godawful 'apps' crap with a mouse and keyboard setup. Actually, not even 'probably', but 'will' because accommodating business has always been a big thing for MS so if they want this thing to be at all taken seriously by companies as an industry standard they will have the more familiar setup. Lets just hope its not only on the Enterprise version or whatever. Sometimes i have the feeling like Microsoft split the Windows development team into two after XP. One makes normal/ good OS releases like 7 and the other makes bargain bin trash like Vista and, inevitably (im clairvoyant, i can already see this, haters gonna hate) Windows 8. Just a little something to make a quick buck and fill the void till the next 'serious' OS release.

What? Every reviewer that has tested Win8 has said it's faster than Win7...

No, it's just that they try new technology and coding on a new OS and don't get it all right. Then the next OS after that one they improve it, learn from their mistakes and bring out a good OS. Happened with: Vista > 7 ME > XP Win95 > Win98

It most certainly is faster than Windows 7. Even the interface for a desktop user (shocker! D:) If you feel Windows 7 is meeting your needs, then don't upgrade, simple as that. That doesn't mean Windows 8 is worse than 7, it just means your need are met.

The more I see of Windows 8 the more I wish there was a real alternative to Microsofts increasingly bloated OS.

Why bloated? Just don't use the features you don't need, like I do :)

...well, sort of... not from Microsoft...yet...

Actually Microsoft said 8 would include the start menu, just after they announced Windows 8. I am sorry I did not provide a source. I also apologize for not reading the entire thread.

Yeah there is a bit of speculation on this subject. I remember too that MS said there would be a start menu for Win8, but the Consumer Preview didn't have one. I still believe that the PRO version will but not the HOME version.

On Windows 8 Blog, he extensively talked about how he designed a better Start Screen and how irrelevent the old Start Menu is. And CP is actually a public beta equivelent. Even at Beta I remember Win7 already had taskbar and everything is very close to RTM? So, don't be supprised if Start Menu is indeed completely replaced. It is not the first time MS took away a useful feature, for example, the Up button that tons of users wanted in Win7.magicalclick
Good point. The UP button is not needed in Win7 cause you can just back-click on the actual address, it's quicker. We shall see what happens with Win8. The PRO version for work should include a basic start menu option.

Which part? The normal desktop looks just like Windows 7. The Metro interface is fast, simple and clear.

I see what you did there...and I liked it. Seriously though, Win8 will be a massive hit with tablets and laptops. Desktops, maybe not so much.
