Wireless/WiFi or Ethernet

Hi Guys,

I am on a Telstra/Bigpond wireless plan/modem.

The routers range easily reaches the spot where my computer will be put.

I am not really sure what the whole difference between Ethernet or WiFi is. I have seen mixed reviews.

Can any of you explain it to me? Which do you use/think is better?

My router is about 9m from my computer desk, does that help?

ethernet!!! wifi sucks for gaming! when it lags you dont know if its your wifi or isp! just stick to ethernet if you can for gaming its alot smoother experience

I used WiFi for everything in my house until I recently built my first PC.  I forgot about getting WiFi for it and I was too impatient to wait for the next day to go get a wifi card so I moved my modem/router to the same room and went Ethernet.  Since it was so close, I decided to connect my Xbox 360 and PS3 by Ethernet as well.  I play a lot of Halo 4 and I noticed a good drop in the amount of "laggy" games I found myself in after I switched to Ethernet.  I have been downloading a few games on Steam too and they go pretty quick (by New Zealand standards anyways). 

So now I would say to always go Ethernet if you can, but if it's not possible or if it's not aesthetically pleasing to you (if that matters) then go WiFi.

I actually had a college networking course. They said that wired networking is faster than wireless. Of course, wireless has gotten better since then.

Wired is currently quicker and more stable.  Wifi is getting much better though.  Other things to consider are how many wireless things you will have in your house as they can eat into your wireless connection quite a bit and if you have a cheap modem it can struggle with so many things.  Me for example in my house i have an xbox, ps3, TV, Blueray, 3 x smart phones, 2 tablets and netbook that use wifi

So I buy a long ethernet cable, plug one end into my router and the other into my computer? Is it that easy? Or not?

If anyone has a good website with a step-by-step guide, that would be great!!!

(I just changed from the standard Telstra Gateway/Modem/Router to a ****** N150 Wireless Modem-Router today. Does that work with ethernet?)

Thats a nice littel router, and yes it is just that easy as plugging in each end.

Wired is always faster and more reliable, if you can use a wire, then do it.

WiFi has got better though.

an ethernet cable wont save my internet :/
