....I think W2 is the first game that might actually have TOO much story. Good God, it's positively weighed down with it. Five minutes of a quest or fight then you run smack-dab into another cust-scene, or cut-scene with back story, or ten minutes of dialog with ten NPCs. I feel like I'm boxed in by the game's plot. I do understand that this isn't an open-world RPG, but....I'm somewhere in the second act, and trying really, really hard to like the game, but it's never really gelled for me. I feel like I'm on rails.

Anyone else agree?

PS--1. Yes, I'm a bro, and this story is cool. 2. TLDR version - Don't like W2 much. 3. And, no, I'm not blogging this. 4. o.0 (feel free to use)

No i don't agree, lol, but that's ok. I think story is important, (in all facets of entertainment) otherwise I won't care what happens to the various characters I meet (assuming the story is well thought out). That being said, yes the game is linear to a degree, but that doesn't make it bad imo. The combat is great compared to an open world game like skyrim (which isn't a bad game either), the characters are memorable, and it has 2 distinct paths that you can take (both of which are pretty different).

The only game in recent memory that I felt had too much story/cutscenes was Metal Gear Solid 4.

Hmmm... it didn't fell like that for me. In fact I was disappointed at how little interaction and side-quests there is with the NPC's around the hub areas (still waiting for something like Torment to appear a gain). The game does get more amusing as the choices you make takes shape. However if you are in for the combat, looting, getting stronger, the game is kinda scarce as far as the amount of battles goes.

Totally agree...both Witcher games end up being fairly boring for me. I try REALLY hard to get into them too...it's just way too much story/dialog/cutscenes. I couldn't go 10 steps in any direction in the first town in TW2 without being harassed and dragged into some cutscene/dialog. I understand people enjoy this type of RPG, but for me it's the pits. Beyond that TW & TW2 are largely linear games and are so focused it really just doesn't feel like much of a RPG...at least not the kind I enjoy. Personally I think Skyrim wipes the floor with TW games.

Since the story is great, I love it. If the story was not good, it would be really boring, but if you follow the story you will be wanting to know how it progresses.

For most games that I start, I'll fumble around a bit learning the interface and what, exactly, I'm supposed to do and where. And either a few minutes or a couple hours in I'll have that "Ah,OK, this is cool" moment where it all comes together and I get pulled into the game and want to play it some more. Just hasn't happened with Witcher 2, and I'm trying to figure out why. It seems like the game is holding me at arm's length. Dunno. Maybe it's the feeling of being on rails, or the clumsy looting and inventory systems or.... Or maybe I'm just more of an open-world RPG guy. But I really enjoyed the first Witcher so I'm even more confused. Who knows? TLDR version: I don't know why.

Never complain about a game having too much story. Why even play a game like this if you don't want story?

there's character building, combat, exploration, and all the staples of what makes an rpg fun to play. so many people skip the story so they can get the next quest, find the next awesome item, or fight the next large creature. Mind you the story in the witcher 2 was actually good and interesting unlike most other games these days. But i get what oc is saying, dont tell me about it... let me damn well play through it. This is what skyrim does well, it lets the user just go and discover without making them just sit and watch.

Thank you, Terror, that's exactly what I mean. I feel like I'm watching a movie with some occasional action pieces thrown in that I can play. It's too much. There were a couple of instances where I was walking around Vergen, trying to explore and learn the map when BAM! cut-scene and suddenly I have to do the next part of a quest that I didn't want to do yet. Kinda annoying.

if you can last 1-2 hours of television or film, then playing through the Witcher 2 shouldnt be much of an issue imo.

It is an RPG, after all, based on books. Its going to be really heavy on story.

I dislike the story in this game not because theres too much of it but quite simply because it confuses the living hell out of me. The story seems to rely on you reading through page long journal entries to know what the heck the characters are blabbering on about half the time. No different from Final Fantasy XIII's datalog entries. Maybe I just like simple story telling.

I disagree, TW2 has too much combat and not enough story... The combat's(at least at launch, I heard it got patched) just not good enough enough to justify it being there.

Cool story bro. Blog it.

Sorry I had to.

I havnt played TW2, but the story in the original was more in your face than I was used to, but luckily I liked the setting and maturity of it.

The Witcher seems like what you would get if HBO did RPG's.

Its a weighty, mature and interesting story. I enjoyed it immensely. Its currently my GOTY, even with its truncated ending. (I havent played much of skyrim yet)

Not only does it have far too much exposition but its badly presented as well. Its all delivered with this mechanical dialogue and characters that are just there to explain stuff to you. lol like this dragon comes straight through the tower, it pulls its head out again and they stuff to have this long-winded conversation about ironing board covers or something. Speed it Geralt!

The cutscenes are mostly terrible - especially the one with the king's kids, that was so embarrassing! The voice actors, especially Triss', are sleepwalking through the script. If they can't be excited by the inner workings of a pretend kingdom, how can I be?

Doesn't seem too bad to me at all.

I agree with a lot of the other posters that something like Metal Gear Solid 4 is a good example of too many cutscenes (at least in my opinion).

That's your opinion. You don't like the game, fine, but don't state it like it's fact. Because it isn't.

lol its a forum board. Not an essay. Not saying this about you but some of The Witcher 2 fans are so defensive about people disliking the game. They demand perfection.
